It is finished! 🙂

Lots of thanks to all the people who supported me with their comments and words of encouragement through the build - it was a great journey and lots of fun 🙂 This is my first build with Scalemates and it was really a great experience 👍

The kit was mostly a joy to work with - everything important coming together easily & leaving room & time to focus on whatever details you like - I highly recommend it and hope to inspire some followups - I will gladly help with any questions/topics I can regarding this one or Flankers in general...

Only aftermarket material was the Eduard PE BIG ED pack, which I think is rather useful & I´d recommend it. Only other thing I´would have used if I had it is the sting conversion set from Cold War Studios. While the much discussed OOB nose is clearly wrong (or more precise, prototype versions nose), I sanded it into proper form easily and I think the sawing off & replacing is much more fuss & loss of detail on the connection than this little cosmetic surgery.

The plane is no particular plane, the real red 07 looks slightly different (as I found out too late) but it combines elements of camo & marking in a +/- correct and feasible config. It is arguably over-weathered, but wanted to create this particular veteran Russian workhorse look, I hope you enjoy the blend 🙂

Thanks a lot mates, your words of praise are really overwhelming, I seriously appreciate it! This is really a great site and a such a chilled gang of people, I am looking forward to more fun and (Chris look away...) learning from what´s going on in this forum😉

James (& Nathan too I guess) - the Eggplant scheme offers some really interesting options too - looks good in factory fresh mint condition, but apparently quickly pales & weathers in the sun, creating some really cool patterns - check Su-34 Syria pics for references, almost makes me want to build another one 🙂 There is also a Road-train load of bombs in the kit so you can make it very different in loadouts - either with a few big smart heavies, or just with grapes of the smaller dudes all over...

Chris & Holger - indeed, love, sweat & tears were all present, but it was also a really enjoyable and fun build. At no point did I feel betrayed by the kit or having an issue that cannot be solved, it´s a kit you can just build well and it all comes together as it should... Most modding went actually into the weapons which, while present in swarms, lack a bit in detail, particularly the engine sections.

Lode - I was not at all sure I´ll finish before the Rodney - enjoy your final chapters there, we´re all watching😉

Next up is a short break, then the F-111 group build, already tracking the kit delivery, box should be open on the table next week!

Real showstopper this one! The weathering is spot on imo, also a very entertaining and inspirational build documentary and the extra work led to a perfect end result. 👍

Thank you mates for all the compliments, it really means a lot! I just hope to stand up to the expectations in the future... 🙂

I just sorted the leftovers today, there is still enough ordnance left to build a Russian weapons factory diorama...

Slavo Hazucha
Thanks Gerald, Bryn, Jim & Tim!

@Tim: It's a start of a collection, I don't have my old good models anymore, this is a hobby comeback project 🙂
8 July 2019, 06:55
Palo M
But do you still have your old bad models?
8 July 2019, 11:49
Slavo Hazucha
@Palo - you should best know what used to happen to my bad models 😄 ... I recall you shooting at one with an air gun in 199*something... 🙂
8 July 2019, 12:14
Palo M
Of course. I also remember breaking a B-2 into pieces, not on purpose 🙁
But there were more great pieces - Victory, F-111, King Tiger (IIRC) and possibly more. Photos some time?
8 July 2019, 17:54
Steven Van Dyck
Very well done, Slavo. Watching these pics, my hair rises on my skull when I contemplate what still awaits me on my Kinetic 1/48 Su-33.
8 July 2019, 19:48
Slavo Hazucha
@Palo - it's all gone except the Victory, which also has seen better days, but at least still exists, sort of 🙂

@ Steven - thanks for the compliments - I'm sure you'll carve yours into a looker, 33's got some great colors & options for weathering. I plan to do the entire Flanker family over the coming years, the basic shape is a work of art & there are countless great patterns & finishes...
8 July 2019, 20:55
Mathieu
I can only join the chorus saying it's one a the best flanker I have seen built. Looking forward for your next move. Cheers

Slavo Hazucha
Mathieu, Neuling & bughunter, thank you very much gentlemen, happy you like the final result, each of you actually inspired me in some field (Mathieu = building a Mustang some time soon (need to get the pilot sorted, then off we go...; Neuling - realistic build, perspective and photography and bughunter in the uncompromised attention and tenacity in utmost micro-detail 🙂 )

Tomorrow my F-111 arrives, but that will be a different story completely...

Michael you need only to look at your collection to see some of the finest Flankers of their respective versions, so your praise is really appreciated - I hope that some Fullbacks will follow here and best this one, there is still air above for sure.

Thanks a lot friends, you are way too kind!!

Stuart, your sublime weathering skills would be somewhat wasted on a normal operational aircraft - but I'd really like to see you build an discarded Tu-95 or MiG-31, left to the elements at the side of an arctic base...

Peter I am indeed proud - to be a part of this fabulous community and enjoy sharing skills & ideas with the best!

unreasonably awxesome!! No, really, this is VERY good! Just a pity that aircraft modellers in general do not put thier masterpieces in a diorama. It would be astonishing to see this model in a scene undergoign maintenance, or just sitting on a stretch of tarmac, or ...
.

Slavo Hazucha
I am absolutely humbled by all this, thanks a lot to all of you mates for your kind words!!!

@Francky - I was thinking about a dio-plate & some equippment, but put it on ToDo for the future - I have a cunning plan of extending the Flanker-family further and maybe will do a larger display base later. Also, I chickened out of the prospect of painting 48-scale faces & crew details... 🙂 Have to catch-up on diorama skills first.

@Lode - as said, I am most proud to be a member of this community & share skills, ideas, thoughts & puns with the best 👍

Same here. Three years into modelling and the encouragement, advice and friendliness had been brilliant. Not to mention the jaw dropping skills of the incredibly talented people on here. Thanks all. Much love and happy Christmas!
12 December 2019, 09:59
Francky
@ Slavo: I am buildign up to a monster diorama (will only take me another 10 years or so). I use standard size "ground plates" that can be used seperately, or as is the final intention, can be combined to form a part of an airfield. Intention is to have the soviet corner, the NATO corner, the 50's corner etc ...

Great job Slavo, mean looking machine! The canopy is very transparent, so we all can enjoy the details in the cockpit

Y'know... seeing something like this almost makes me want to tackle a 1/48 scale build... so much detail... so beautiful.

14 December 2019, 01:23
Slavo Hazucha
Thanks a lot mates for all your kind words!

@Francky - I really don't wanto to miss that mega dio & the pieces on the airstrip!

@Erik - the whole HB kit was exceptionally good, nice details & great fit except maybe the tail sting. Not cheap & 50% of the box are weapons, not plane, but it is one really good kit.

@Greg - I recommend the Revell B-1 for 48-scale starters! Seriously - would be great to see your take on something big a but above all, stay/go where the fun is!
14 December 2019, 16:05
Greg Baker
I'd be afraid it would fall on me and crush me to death!

Pero Susinger
Great job!

After finishing my current project the SU-34 is next to be built. But I can't decide whether to build her with deployed landing gear or in a flight position on a stand. She looks awfully dangerous in the air. On the other hand her double-tire gear is somewhat special, too.

And I'm having problems to decide what color scheme I will choose. Both, the blue scheme as well as the black scheme are quite impressive. I tend to the blue scheme my son wants the black scheme. 🙂
13 May 2020, 10:31
Slavo Hazucha
Thanks Pero!

Do you already have a kit? The HB I built was a really nice one, but the Kittyhawk one is allegedly not bad either... The whole rather complex landing gear was quite an enjoyable build, but in-flight would again really bring out that odd "duck of doom" shape & appeal of the aircraft - decisions, decisions... 🙂

The dark Eggplant color (a tone the specific determination of which can apparently break friendships on the internet...) is interesting, particularly when weathered (as some of the Syrian Su-34´s looked...)

In any case, looking forward to what you will come forth with!😉
13 May 2020, 13:32
Greg Baker
That is spectacular. Wow... and the dynamic pictures make her pop!
13 May 2020, 16:00

Duck of doom - I like that! 🙂 And yes, I have the KittyHawk kit. I will present my build when it is finished. Although I think it will take a few months.

Slavo, I scrolled through this album again. It is just stunning. I think we both share the sense of detailling and enjoy that part. Time consuming but well worth the efforts. Again, just waaauw, this build
13 May 2020, 22:17
Megan Harris
this is absolutely stunning!!! do you have any tips for how you did that weathering? Like the black smudge/oil stains on the panel edges? or the realistic metal effect on the exhaust? I'm going to be doing a phantom model soon, and would appreciate any tips to achieve weathering and detail effects just like these ones!
13 May 2020, 23:02
Greg Baker
I also enjoy a sense of detailing... but I don't have the patience to see it through. I have a lot of respect for people like Slavo and Lode who keep a steady hand and work through projects and an even pace. The results speak for themselves.
14 May 2020, 00:12
Slavo Hazucha
Thanks Tim, Juergen, Clifford, Lode, Megan & Greg! The Fullback is enjoying it´s place on display for some time now, skillfully avoiding "unsupervised child grabs" by my kids & their friends so far 😄

Lode - you bend it, I paint it😉

Megan - Base colors + irregular post-shading first (MRP colors), then winsor & newton oils applied dilluted as a wash - play with thinning ratios & time of drying to get the effect what you need - then different smears (some "painted", some "true" - add a dot of unthinned oil color to the "starting point" and pull it with a towel/cloth/cotton swab in direction of airflow. Remove/repeat until happy...

With oils drying for days, I often work over 2 days - day one I intentionally leave more on and day 2 refine with cotton swabs I polish/de-saturate the smears to their final level.

Greg - respect goes both ways - I think it takes a braver man to dig up a 144-scale "lump of wood" and make something of it, which is great & pleasing to the eye, than pick up 48+ scale super-models and hide behind all the details & aftermarket as I do...😉

Great model building! Loved the WIP album too! I only think the model deserves better pictures (white clean background, not the black wrinkly one you have)! Fantastic, thank you for sharing and inspiration! 👍
