Off to a great start I see Pete !
22 February 2020, 02:53
Nathan Dempsey
Oooh now this looks interesting🙂 That's going to be a stunner Peter.
22 February 2020, 04:10
Peter Hardy
Don't get too excited Nat, I won't be doing striping like that. Pin stripes were more in tune with the early nineties. Awesome looking truck though eh!
22 February 2020, 05:13
Peter Hardy
Jay dub, this will take a while, I got plans! 😉
22 February 2020, 05:14
Tom ...
I see I'm out of my league already. Mines going to be OOB. I already gave up on removing seams.
22 February 2020, 06:49
Martin Oostrom
And I'm waaaaaaay behind. Sometimes I don't like work ;-(
22 February 2020, 08:43
Tim Heimer
You know this started off as a Western star, but when it's done it will be a Peterbilt!!
22 February 2020, 13:51
Tim Heimer
Don't give up Tom! Take your time and you'll be fine! This is for fun and sharing skills.
22 February 2020, 13:57
Martin Oostrom
Tom, you're not out of your league because Peter posts a shiny image of a shiny truck. What Peter forgot to mention is that this already is his second attempt. The first one ended when he ...... 😄
22 February 2020, 14:25
Peter Hardy
Unfortunately Martin the Mouth and spreader of personal secrets speaks the truth. I have two kits. One with a broken chassis. I'll blame climate change, it is apparently to blame for the lawn growing and my toast drying out too quickly anyway so it is only a small jump to a cracked chassis, AND, it robbed me of my childhood, somehow?
22 February 2020, 22:41
Peter Hardy
Up Ship Creek I think.
23 February 2020, 07:46
Martin Oostrom
Martin the Mouth 😄 sounds like an evil character from a cartoon!
Extra tanks and airlines look very cool Peter
23 February 2020, 08:03
Tom ...
I feel so inadequate. 🙁
23 February 2020, 08:20
Martin Oostrom
Just call it a learning curve 😄
23 February 2020, 08:39
Peter Hardy
I'll take that as a compliment Tom as I hold you in high esteem!
23 February 2020, 09:33
Martin Oostrom
Very smart idea to use the dremel that way 👍
23 February 2020, 11:29
Peter Hardy
Martin, it was only last Friday that a truck driver at work told me I was half smart!
23 February 2020, 21:20
Nathan Dempsey
You'd be full smart over here Peter!

Hmmm I should have cast some extra air tanks I see...
23 February 2020, 21:36
Peter Hardy
Nat, I am intrigued to see what you do with the electricals. I am thinking of which fuel tanks to use and where to put the battery boxes. Got any ideas mate? Pal, Buddy of mine?
1 March 2020, 07:38
Martin Oostrom
One word: AWESOME!
1 March 2020, 07:44
Peter Hardy
Come on Marty, you can do better than that! One word?
1 March 2020, 08:39
Martin Oostrom
More words would only depreciate what I'm trying to say 😄
1 March 2020, 09:41
Tim Heimer
How about fkn awesome?
1 March 2020, 14:03
Bozzer
The only worrying thing is, we have all seemed to go with the same colour. I was toying with red, but it didn't feel right? In my initial research, I came across many many blue rigs. Hence why I have gone blue too. @Tom, don't give up mate. United we stand! Because of a business meeting yesterday, then a following drinks session, I've got bugger all done. Still, it's not a race, it's an education. Great work on the steering box Peter, looks like it grew there
1 March 2020, 15:20
Martin Oostrom
Okay, I'll surrender half of my blue for something else 😉
1 March 2020, 16:34

The Outback Blues...

Oh Peter I'm really torn between going all out and taking FOREVER to finish, or just doing the best I can and maybe finishing on time.
1 March 2020, 17:55
Peter Hardy
I will place a notice with you blokes at this point. My truck will go on display in my office which has a constant flow of truck drivers and heavy vehicle maintenance fitters coming and going. I will have tougher judges than my Scalemates to impress!

Marty and Tim and Marko, thanks gents, your encouragement is appreciated.

Bozz, make yours yellow! Thanks for the comment on the steering box. I made two!

Nat, take all the time you need. I have plans for the engine bay you will like I hope and the exterior of the firewall is another very visible and easily detailed area.
1 March 2020, 21:36
Nathan Dempsey
Excellent. I'm following with anticipation🙂
1 March 2020, 22:05
Bozzer
@Peter. Already bought my paint mate. I try to avoid yellow and white. I never have much luck with it. Something always goes wrong when I use either of those colours.
3 March 2020, 13:20
Peter Hardy
Bozza, I am worried I don't have enough paint for the bodywork. I have selected a beautiful blue but only have one bottle of it.
4 March 2020, 02:57

Two tone perhaps, Peter?

As your Mum would say: Peter get in there and clean up your mess!
10 March 2020, 21:09

Looking very promising, Peter. So far so good
10 March 2020, 22:28
Spanjaard
looking great Peter!
10 March 2020, 22:38
Bozzer
Peter, did you have any issues with your front end? I seem to be having a problem with a tilting radiator and my front crossmember?
11 March 2020, 00:14
Peter Hardy
Mine is just dry fitted atm Bozz, but it sits in near enough to perfect. The fan drive sits proud of the fan itself mate, just the locating peg goes into the fan.
11 March 2020, 01:06
Peter Hardy
Thank you Lode and Spanaard! I'll try not to disappoint you!!
Tim, my mother never had to tell me that! My Dad had a habit of making sure it was done before Mum got to my room.
Danny, I am going ultra slow as this kit is like a minefield. And, I always think of something I can add detail to as I go. I will drill out the rest of the tank steps this week and paint the black base on the wheels and the silver base on the tanks this weekend. I am anxious to see the colour I have chosen actually laying down.
Bozz, Still not sure of the paint scheme yet. I just love the metallic silver on the blue on the HHA truck in my album.
11 March 2020, 01:17
Bozzer
Peter, everything sits right, from the rear axle, prop tight up to the gearbox. But, my rad sits forward at an angle and my top rad hose is about 1.5-2.0mm away? I'm thinking about removing the rad and shaving the centre of the fan down. This will bring me closer. I don't want it to interfere with the hood closing. Also, for some reason, when fitting my front axle, the front crossmember popped out, on the off side? Kinda like the axle was too big for the locating slots? It's not twisted, but very unusual for an Italeri kit. I'll post a couple of pictures.
11 March 2020, 02:54
Peter Hardy
Please, I'd like to have a look.
11 March 2020, 05:59
Slavo Hazucha
Reviewing this group build & this particular specimen almost makes me want to build some heavy machinery too... 🙂 Lovely work on the frame, suspension & drivetrain (I hope I'm shooting terms broadly in the right direction...) 👍

As for the color scheme, I'll keep rooting for the blue with metallic stripes! All year if need be!😉 😄
14 March 2020, 16:36
Peter Hardy
Well Slavo, I will see what I can do! Can't emulate that Pig though. Still blown away by that!
14 March 2020, 22:29
Lode Schildermans
Those rear light look so real. How did you do that, Peter?
15 March 2020, 07:36
Martin Oostrom
Wow! I'll repeat for effect: Wow!
15 March 2020, 08:33
Peter Hardy
Lode, I just painted and glued parts from Auslowe. Simples! Www.auslowe.com.au
Marty, challenge issued! I await your response.
15 March 2020, 08:59
Slavo Hazucha
A lovely set of heavy duty jewelry! - hope you did not break yor neighbor's rear-lights for these!😉

And an additional thumbs-up for the MiG-28 stars on the mudguards 👍
15 March 2020, 09:01
Peter Hardy
Sorry Slavo, these are Western Stars, not Eastern Stars! Right colour though! Never made the connection before myself. Just confirms your addiction to aeronautics.
15 March 2020, 09:18
Tim Heimer
Peter, the best way to check for gaps is to spray some flat or sg black paint on it. It'll show everything!
22 March 2020, 17:50
Brandon H
Awesome details, Peter, looking great so far!
22 March 2020, 18:06
Nathan Dempsey
Nice work Peter. Everything is looking tip top!
22 March 2020, 19:35
Lode Schildermans
A lot of work and tiny parts. Nice to see the detail done by an expert on the matter
22 March 2020, 20:27
Spanjaard
where is the key to start that engine? wow
22 March 2020, 21:31
Peter Hardy
Tim, Primer usually breaks my heart. Problem for these panels is they don't meet at the same angle. I see tears ahead!
22 March 2020, 21:35
Peter Hardy
Thanks Brandon, welcome to my nightmare!
22 March 2020, 21:36
Peter Hardy
Nate, I am more than a wee bit worried that the fittings on the back of the block will contact the firewall. Time will tell.
22 March 2020, 21:37
Peter Hardy
Lode & Spanjaard, thank you for your encouragement!
22 March 2020, 21:40
Slavo Hazucha
The original essence of the Primer was created in the Cauldron of Loki from stray souls of lawyers, accountants & parking-ticket sheriffs...😉
22 March 2020, 22:06
Peter Hardy
Slavo, now I know you are talking shite! Lawyers and parking ticket sheriffs don't have a soul!
22 March 2020, 22:15
Tom ...
Amazing work! Wow!
23 March 2020, 00:32
Bozzer
Peter, I did post up some pictures about that cab. It's a dog to do. Your engine is lovely mate!
23 March 2020, 04:14

Hey Bozz, yeah I saw your comments and thought, "Ah come on Bozz, it can't be that bad surely"! But it is!

I like it - Youtube Video

23 March 2020, 08:55
Bozzer
Mate, I've done a few Italeri trucks now, and to be honest, I think this cab setup is rediculous. Their American Superliner (basically a Mack without the badges, that's another story), is a far better setup. I also recommend that kit. The roof is one piece.
23 March 2020, 11:02
Nathan Dempsey
I'm going a few steps back....
Peter I must commend you on the bumper. That thing is covered in seams and ejector pin marks and yours looks perfect!!
26 March 2020, 19:41
Peter Hardy
It wasn't good enough Nate, I have stripped the chrome off the second kit's bull bar. I sanded too much off the right hand post and it was too visible. The ejector pin marks are a PAIN! They are flat so some have needed sanding / trimming AND filling. Really frustrated atm as I am working from home and can't find time to get into the hobby room! Tomorrow is the weekend so it will be fun fun fun!
27 March 2020, 00:59
Bozzer
That cab is looking great Peter! I can see you making a belter, out of this build! I expect my paint to arrive today, so hopefully I'll be back in the game. Keep up with the good work buddy, Bozzer down and on the side.
30 March 2020, 06:58
Peter Hardy
JD, haven't even looked at that yet! OMG! What have I done?

Bozz, I am still waiting for silver base and blue candy. I changed the colour as the one I had was too light. Nice to see you are up and around!
30 March 2020, 07:15
Bozzer
Peter, don't stress! I know some guys who have simply cut the tags off the sides, at the bottom, and slid the interior in. I'm not sure about the dash fitting, but I'm sure you can manipulate it through the sleeper hole?
30 March 2020, 07:27
Bozzer
Just been thinking... If you are struggling, try removing the seats? I know that you can refit them through the sleeper door hole, because I've done that in the past. It's pretty easy, to be fair. Just food for thought Peter 👍 Ps, thanks for the kind words
30 March 2020, 07:33
Slavo Hazucha
Roof line turned out looking really smart! 👍
30 March 2020, 07:36
Bozzer
John, I posted some pictures of the correct placement of the fuel tanks, on my album. Pity you missed it? Them instructions are generic, I think. Italeri have a habit of cockups like that. Another is the location pin on their turbochargers. What you dry fit some of them, the air side is upside down! I'm currently also working on the FLD 120 Special, that has the same issue. Just cut off the half-moon pin and locate it the correct way.
30 March 2020, 09:01
Peter Hardy
Are we talking long or short tanks Bozz?
30 March 2020, 09:17
Peter Hardy
Thanks Slavo! Still not perfect but it has. OST some time. All those bike fuel tank halves proved good practice!
30 March 2020, 09:20
Bozzer
Peter, at the beginning of the instructions, it tells you to drill holes in the chassis. These holes aren't in the right places. Refer to my album for the correct placement of the tanks. I dry fitted mine, to make sure that they are correct. I screwed up at first and did the same as John. Luckily, I caught it before the glue dried.
30 March 2020, 09:29
Danny Meer
Cab looks really nice, doesn't give that problems to put interior in after building cab?
30 March 2020, 09:49
Peter Hardy
It's plastic Danny, it'll bend. (He says with gusto but behind his back his fingers are firmly crossed).
It's ok Bozz, I would end up moving them anyway. I can't leave anything alone!
30 March 2020, 11:39
Martin Oostrom
You'll be finished before I get to some paintwork! Great progress Peter.
30 March 2020, 13:07
Lode Schildermans
I agree, Martin. Peter's build is looking great. You've to keep up the pace with him
30 March 2020, 21:21

Over the moon with the interior. Thought this sort of stuff was beyond me!
5 April 2020, 07:31

New paint booth is in my gallery. Have a nosey lads 👍
5 April 2020, 19:39
Peter Hardy
Thanks Bozz!
Fear of failure does that to all of us Tim!
Thanks Nate! I'm strutting around my hobby room with my chest puffed out like a bantam rooster!
JD, I bought the wire 12 months ago. Must have something in mind! Just coiled it tightly around a drill bit.
6 April 2020, 06:51
Lode Schildermans
This build is becoming better and better, Peter. And the interior is well worth the efforts. Well done, mate
6 April 2020, 08:45
Slavo Hazucha
A cozy place indeed, looking all very good, some of it should even stay visible through the glass... 👍

I hope it will all slide in without much fuss & friction!😉
6 April 2020, 08:46
Peter Hardy
Thank you Lode! Australian trucks have been my life for 45 years so it's a subject I should not need to look for references for. The interior lining on these trucks was vinyl and multi shaded hence the "Jackson Pollock" look. I just hope I can pull the exterior paint off as well!

Slavo, the cabin roof lining will need some grunt to get in but the floor should slip right in. Check back next Monday to find out how it went!
6 April 2020, 10:31
Danny Meer
O my god...that blue is so nice!!! love it 👍
11 April 2020, 10:13
Martin Oostrom
Alclad is really easy to do too dark. It still looks mighty fine on the pictures. In daylight she might be just where you want her though?
11 April 2020, 12:31
Tim Heimer
Don't think you can get any bluer!
11 April 2020, 12:45
Nathan Dempsey
That blue looks luxurious🙂
11 April 2020, 16:02
Slavo Hazucha
You are right that the blue on the model seems just a little bit darker than what is on the title pic of the truck - but your pics are inside while the truck is basking in the sun... If you for whatever reason can´t live with it, then it´s all your choice, but before that, hear that it is one of the best coats of blue and the most intriguing tone & color depth I´ve ever seen on a model... 👍
11 April 2020, 16:10
Peter Hardy
Danny, it's growing on me. It's certainly blue! I am relatively new at painting panels with gloss so I am happy with my progress. Thanks to KC for helping me change directions from acrylics to lacquers and some (very) patient guidance with using an airbrush.
11 April 2020, 23:02
Peter Hardy
JD, kinda scared to put sandpaper anywhere near it! Even 12000 grit!
11 April 2020, 23:03
Peter Hardy
Tim, you missed another Skype call yesterday! I'm starting to think you don't love me anymore!
11 April 2020, 23:04

Nate, wallow in it!
11 April 2020, 23:05
Peter Hardy
Thank you Slavo, I am keeping a second thought on this. I will do a spoon test today and work it out.
11 April 2020, 23:06
Nathan Dempsey
I'd be a blue pig Peter!
12 April 2020, 00:07
Peter Hardy
I don't care Nate, just don't leave foot prints in it! I have just painted two spoons with the blue. I'll put some SMS metallic silver over it this arvo and see how it covers / takes / complements / clashes!
12 April 2020, 00:23
Kerry COX
Peter. Do you think you could manage the pinstripe with BMF. ?? Tricky, but maybe worth it. 😉
12 April 2020, 00:26

12 April 2020, 01:04

Dunno Kerry, not something I'd thought of actually.
12 April 2020, 02:57
Peter Hardy
Thanks Brandon, it's certainly eye catching isn't it?
12 April 2020, 02:58
Kerry COX
I did see the op you mentioned, but easily eliminated like you say. Have you got any lead thread. ? It's good for making leads attached to battery or started motors.
12 April 2020, 03:08
Peter Hardy
Yeah Kezza, got lots of cables of all thicknesses but only a couple of lead threads.
12 April 2020, 06:41
Kerry COX
I will show you how it's done.
12 April 2020, 07:55
Lode Schildermans
Peter'm very impressed, not especially by the color, but by the result of painting. It's simply stunning. Some car professionals never get such a result
12 April 2020, 08:48
Munkyslut
Beautiful paint, almost a shame to spoil it with stripes
12 April 2020, 09:26
Peter Hardy
Thanks Lode! I have been trying to improve over a long period and am definitely getting there. Still a couple of spots of orange peel but sanding and polishing will fix them. I will admit to walking into the hobby room just to make sure I'm not dreaming!
12 April 2020, 09:41
Peter Hardy
Got a couple of test spoons drying out tonight Monkey, yet to be determined if it will be metallic silver panels or silver pinstripes and scrolls. Got a half built KR500 to finish when this is done.
12 April 2020, 09:44
Munkyslut
KR500???? I can feel somethin stirring in me shorts....
12 April 2020, 11:00

I might just leave that alone thanks!
12 April 2020, 22:32

Do you like the colour? You must be kidding... I love it!
12 April 2020, 22:49

Peter wins! He lives in Australia and he's building a truck! Australian truck build? I can't win, I'm in the U.S!
13 April 2020, 01:34
Kerry COX
Peter is good at trucks, as he works around them everyday and is as big and tough as them. No detail too small for his build. Just amazing what he does.
13 April 2020, 01:49
Peter Hardy
I'll have a few more pics up in a few hours. Just put all the round black thingos on.
13 April 2020, 03:21

Make it Irish whiskey and it's a deal!
15 April 2020, 06:46
Peter Hardy
Thanks JD. Have to put some thought into the fire wall now!
15 April 2020, 10:31
Slavo Hazucha
Wow that front grill with the fine mesh behind the bars looks epic... Take a few "studio pics" of this on a white/black background and you can sell it as a real truck part... 👍 😄
15 April 2020, 10:46
Kerry COX
Now I am back home and with the big monitor, I can honestly say, I am so pleased to see such a wonderful result with all you have done Peter. Truly inspiring my friend. 🙂

Big Pete can build hugely ego puffing trucks and bikes. Deservedly!
15 April 2020, 21:20

Slavo, I seriously doubt that it is that good but I will happily accept all accolades! Kinda chuffed that you and KC encourage me as much as you do. Thank you!
15 April 2020, 22:44

15 April 2020, 23:09

Gotta take my hat off to you Peter, with all that plumbing. I wouldn't have clue mate? I've done bits, mainly on the cooling system, but not to that extent mate. I'll stick with my wiring, it's a lot easier.
16 April 2020, 08:58
Lode Schildermans
Peter, this builds becomes more impressive with each post. Truly an asset to your collection.

I see someone caught the scratchbuilding virus😉

What can I say, TERRIFIC job mate! Especially the paintjob, wow! That blue is gorgeous!👍
16 April 2020, 19:15
Peter Hardy
Thanks Bozz, I will have plenty of "experts" judging it on a daily basis at work so it has to be accurate.

Cheers Lode, you set a very high bar for the rest of us to aim at!

Alexander! Wonderful of you to drop by and even more special for you to leave a nice comment. You are sadly missed at Scalemates. I think you and a certain Lamborghini had something to do with the scratch building virus spreading into my veins!

AMT Mack R685 + Peerless Logging Trailer | Album by brahoff (1:25)

Highly recommend that Mack kit! Lots of directions you can go with it. Some AMT kits can take a bit more effort to get the all the fits right, but this one came together pretty smoothly for me.
18 April 2020, 15:21
Slavo Hazucha
Peter that treatment you gave the "silver bit" on top of the engine really looks just spot on... I lack the vocabulary to describe it in English, but it just "looks the thing" 👍

Kim Branders
Something different. I like it Peter and i'm in for the finish.
18 April 2020, 20:48
Bozzer
Kerry, I'm another fan of the Mack R685ST kit. If you go nuts and extend the chassis, you can also add a sleeper? AMT do a Mercury sleeper, but I'm certain Auslowe do some too. Just extend the frame, by the size of the sleeper and maybe add 5mm? Just a thought buddy.
19 April 2020, 05:34

This will be an ever expanding venture, and given that there is so much to add, I will be at it for a long time to come. But thank you for the encouragement Bozzer. 😉 👍

Nevertheless, it is done and will stay something the builders knows. I've often that feeling with the almost invisible tiny parts.

JD. I have Peter Doyle contacting me this weekend to go through the differences between the pilot bike his Dad Neville Doyle built for Kawasaki ( Jim Budd / Gregg Hansford) and the eventual bike that Gregg and Eddie Lawson came second on at the 1980 Suzuka 8 hour race. I also have renowned Motorsport photographer Phil Ainsley offer to supply me hi res pics of Gregg's 1981 KR500! Kind of intimidating, hope I can build something they will be impressed by!

Munkey, Peter Doyle ran the AMA Suzuki Superbike Team for many years. What he doesn't know about getting the most out of an engine wouldn't be worth knowing.

I'll check him out Peter!
I met Lawson at a big classic bike show in the U.K. a few years back. I still fondly remember all the Z1000's we painted green & slapped Kerker pipes on in the late 80's 😉

Thanks JD! Got the last mud gourds on now. That might just do me for the weekend!

Damn Peter, really love all the detail work on your truck that pinstriping looks so nice on that blue.
In 10 yrs hope to get as good as you with detailing 🙂 for now I'm just happy to build something and not fall apart while looking at it 😛

Kerry COX
Spectacular to say the least Peter. 👍
Very well done mate. 🙂
26 April 2020, 08:07
Peter Hardy
Thanks Danny! I have probably done too much detail on this. Spent more than I should have. Spent far too much time looking at the ceiling from my bed at two am wondering how the hell I was going to do some of that detail. However, it has been a very satisfying build, and enjoyable because I have learned as much from you and Chris and JD and ... I haven't done a group build before but I will do another perhaps if the subject interests me.
26 April 2020, 09:35

Wilky, I can report I have spent three days bogged in mud in Central Queensland on a station track many years ago. Gourds of mud would understate it!

Thanks Kez! Been having a ball!

Outstanding work Peter. Oh that Blue!

Did those assistant mounts come with the mud-guards or did you make them? In any case it looks very helpful for getting them on evenly.
26 April 2020, 13:26

Peter, one can clearly see your knowledge of trucks, and for sure your skills to show us how a truck has to be build. Awesome mate

I'm starting to think if it isn't too much work photoshoping the real truck on the modelers bench background😉
26 April 2020, 17:45

that is one cool truck, this group build has some really cool projects going on! The blue & silver look great together
26 April 2020, 18:02

Nate, the mounting posts came with the guards but it is 1.5mm aluminium tube. Readily available. The post mounts are just styrene tube and sheet glued together.
26 April 2020, 22:02
Peter Hardy
It's funny Lode, building the truck is similar in process to building a ship or bike. Very enjoyable though not to have to go searching for references all the time though!
26 April 2020, 22:31
Peter Hardy
Thanks Wim! Agree there are some very interesting builds in this group. It is nice not to be limited to specific colours like building a military or race replica. Having fun!

Thank you Danny. I am trying to stop myself from going overboard, but it isn't working. Now started a HF radio antenna for long distance comms which was not unusual for some fleets. With Oz being such a large country and mobile phone towers few and far between HF radios (as distinct from UHF or CB radios) were used for keeping in touch with the fleet. They work up to 50 kilometres then from 500 to 3000 kilometres with minor modulation problems. The frequency is adjustable automatically nowadays but in 1990 most radios had a wire wrapped around the antenna and multiple plug receptors for each frequency. This is what I am trying to replicate.

That paint job looks bloody amazing, if not flawless 🙂. The shine and reflections are so clear and smooth!
May I ask how you achieved such a glossy look (lacquers, ratios, etc.)? I'm still finding my way around the myriad of options, thinners, brands, and I've yet to come up with a formula that I am satisfied with...
5 May 2020, 10:58
Peter Hardy
Thanks JB. The finish has six coats of Alclad Clear Gloss. It is far from perfect unfortunately. I start with a tack coat, very light just to hold the clear coat onto the paint. The coats get progressively heavier until the last two are very wet. Each coat needs to get a surface tension to stop sagging. I didn't leave it quite long enough and got some sag in a couple of spots. I will sand them and the orange peel out in a few days when the clear has hardened completely.

That's what I call dedication. Having only just started out I'm caught between experimenting and just wanting to finally finish things..... Your experience comes through clear and shiny!

Good lighting (not too warm, either) is essential. I have two photography light boxes, one each side, each with a ring adapter holding 7 large LED cornbulbs behind diffusers. And an Anglepoise, obviously.

I'm not sure what others use but I use the Novus products. On enamels I don't need to clear coat them to get a good shine, but I do that because it gives the look of that era and not a High gloss look. For what it's worth.

You don't get out much then do you. Look at the Western Star at the start of my Album. Built for Heavy Haulage Australia and now works out of Sarina Crane Hire. Plenty of them out there. Getting cold down there now? Victoria in winter, nice place not to be near!

Wilky, even here in the UK, we see the odd painted tank. I've seen plenty of them, whilst in the states. I have a Mack R, that I visit, every time I go. She's a beauty of a truck, and one day I'm gonna build it. Unfortunately, I'm not gifted enough to share it on here. Bloody computers are still my weakness, although slowly I'm getting better.

I don't think so Tim.

Thank you Tom, Jim C, Kezza, Lode and Nate. Your accolades are undeserved but warmly welcomed.

Should be all done in a week or two. Got two builds in mind to do next. Both are gifts from friends who do model. A Tamiya 1/72 scale ( don't fall off your chairs here) Aichi Nanzan hairyplane and a Hasegowa 1/24 scale Sauber Mercedes C9.
1 June 2020, 04:15
Slavo Hazucha
Great looking "armor" & lights!😉 👍 And I still can´t see enough variations of the fab blue - great show in any light conditions...

As for the choice, I´ll probably take the Merc... (I just don´t trust anything in 72-scale... 😄)

No? I could send you a sound card of the horns!

IF And I do mean IF.
There is a scale model competition/display held in the wonderful town of Mackay in the remainder of this year.
I strongly suggest that this build be entered, not necessarily to win any comp, but to have your piers pass comment and yes, judgement, on this beautiful example of scale modelling.
To deny others the pleasure of seeing this truck in all it's glory would be a crying shame.
Peter, you owe the scale modelling world the pleasure of your skills and dedication.
What say you my fellow scale modellers. ?
Show or no show. ?
14 June 2020, 11:59
Martin Oostrom
We might be able to persuade him to display this beauty, but a competition is a no go for Pete.
14 June 2020, 12:49
Kerry COX
Time to change his mind then Martin.
As it would create a whole new and different person if he was acclaimed a master scale modeller.
If there is one tonic that gets a bloke a boost to his own self esteem, then having others say so with a tangible offering of recognising his skills is the way to do it . 👍 🙂

What a beauty👍 Outstanding work Pete!
It sure helps figuring out the whole wiring, hydraulics and all the "plumbing" if you are working with these beasts on a daily basis!
Oh and since I know from own experience how difficult it is to lay down a proper paintjob, yours turned out to be remarkable👍👍
14 June 2020, 18:10

To say that it's looking fabulous would be a gross understatement. The detailing, painting and chrome work all tie together perfectly to look gorgeous! Will look forward to the completed build. 👍

Geeze Louise! You blokes are embarrassing me!
Kez, a comp won't happen while I am working at least. Understand I would learn but I am not yet at the point where I cannot see where improvements are needed. When I think I'm doing a ripper job I may give it some consideration.
Lode, ease up mate, I have a list of faults as long as my arm but, thanks for the encouragement old mate, it means a lot coming from you!
Alex G, this is all your fault! You and that Lambo! Thanks for the encouragement along the way, please stay close to my builds. Your criticism is welcomed, your praise is embraced!
JC, welcome home! Thanks for pumping me tyres, they were getting a little flat! You shouldn't have to wait long for the Blue Mule to be finished, just got two problems I haven't got an answer for yet.
Nate Tom and Tim, thanks gents, it has been a project! Glad you think it hasn't disappointed!
JD, I will post you some glue if you don't build something soon!
15 June 2020, 11:46
Slavo Hazucha
Still like the blue...😉 The whole thing looks more & more menacing with every shot added to the gallery

Quite a feat & a few right choices, the single color + shiny bits execution looks magnificent! 👍 I also guess all the engine, hoses & wiring details are 100% reality-proof - they surely do look the part!

What exactly is the mesh in front of the windscreen on pics 146-147 for? Flying roadkill bits & pieces?
15 June 2020, 12:37
Chaz Gordon
Problems? Dion't see any, except for the possible need to wear sunglasses to avoid the shine from that paint job. Nice work, As for issues - Post them here someone may know the answer.
15 June 2020, 12:47
Lode Schildermans
Well, Pete, with this build you're a T-Rex 🙂
15 June 2020, 13:35
Peter Hardy
Slavo, the mesh is called a "stone screen". Outback roads are usually one lane wide if they are sealed. Oncoming traffic requires wheels in the dirt and with 80 wheels in the dirt you are going to get flying stones. A lot of flying stones. The screen helps a bit.
The problems Chaz are with the exhausts, mufflers and heat shields. Mine are aftermarket universal parts that require customisation. Got the thinking cap on!
Thanks Lode! My kids reckon I'm a dinosaur so that figures!
16 June 2020, 00:20
Kerry COX
That's why he is called 'Dora'. 😉 The 'wiggles' have one by the same name too. 👍
16 June 2020, 02:51
Spanjaard
Peter you are your worst critic... this is a beauty of a build. you put your heart, modelling experience and trucking experience on it. you should bring this to a contest. there are two possibilities, you do not win anything, and then you come back with good feedback on what do better (if they can find anything, which is doubtful to be honest), or you get an award, and then you will be a very happy camper. so it is a win-win situation. that is just my two cents on this😉
16 June 2020, 12:39
Kerry COX
Spanjaard, Well put and I totally agree with everything you say. 👍
I think I know Peter pretty well being his friend, and I do believe he would be a scale modeller to fear once he has the acclaim of all his piers here on the local level.
I will not force his hand to put his builds out there for all to see, but I will certainly use all my supportive energy to get him to swallow that bitter pill and 'have a crack at it'.
After all, his nick name is 'cracker'. 🙂
16 June 2020, 13:52
Chaz Gordon
Peter, not sure what the specific hurdles are, but i'd look toward fat sprue leftovers for exhaust pipes, and any random plastic tube i can find for mufflers. As to heatshields, could always make them out of real metal, like empty coke can just watch those edges.
16 June 2020, 17:20
Spanjaard
model is already out (t)here for all to see😉
17 June 2020, 00:17
Kerry COX
I see that Peter is out there on the international stage with his builds and reaping the praise and rewards for doing so. So what would putting his truck in a local comp do for him. ? Especially when his builds are world beaters now. !

That is a beast. Awesome build! I have the Kenworth T900 "Australia" (Revell 07549, 1:25) and will build it sometime this year.

Jarrett, the T 900 Australia looks nothing like an Australian truck. Revell gave it right hand drive and a bull bar. The step on the battery box HAS to go!
8 January 2022, 00:55

Ha agreed. I'll need to pick up the model you all built. It looks boss of the road trains
8 January 2022, 06:31

You will need fuel. Lots of it! Most interstaters have a range of 2500 kilometres. If you are running stock crates from stations to fattening properties closer in you need a range of 3000+.
