Hi Mike. I am fairly new and wanted to add my compliments. Very nice and especially so since it is 1/72. The interior is a great addition and really shows your skills at scratch building. I recognized your name and looked at your profile to check since I am familiar with your decal site. We are in the same country, just on different ends of it. Thanks for posting the pictures

Can't believe this is an Airfix kit from the mid 60's. Amazing! I remember building one of these when it came with an RE8 as a dog fight double, about '65/'66. Mine looked nothing like this though🙂

Very nice work Mike. I am about to start the Eduard 1/48version. Had no idea that Airfix ever produced this one. I am inspired by your work. What do you use for your rigging ?
18 July 2017, 10:43
Alec K
I second the praise, and the rigging question. I have seen this approach on Mike's other models, and being "rigging-challenged", would love to know the details.

Mike Grant
Thanks guys! 👍 @Mike & Alec I built this kit a few years ago and used fishing line, drilling all the way through the lower wing, pulling the lines taut and gluing, but it required a lot of touch-up and repair on the undersides. Recently I've been using Uschi Van Der Rosten elastic thread, and it's much less labour-intensive, is more resilient and looks more to scale.

Fantastic build Mike!

Thanks for the info Mike. I am quite new to rigging and have tried all sorts - streched sprue, cotton, nylon thread with mixed results and am gonna have a go with light gauge wire on the Roland. I will certainly check out Uschi Van Der Rosten elastic thread if I can find a supplier. Cheers.

Pierre Pierre
Amazing job ! May i ask what size of Uschi Van Der Rosten do you use for 1/72 ?
2 April 2020, 10:47
Mike Grant
@Pierre Thanks for the comment. This is an older build and was rigged using fishing line, but now I use the UVDR elasticated thread. For rigging 1/72 biplanes I use the 'Fine' weight.

I can recall building this kit when I was 12 or 13. When I see what you achieved with yours I measure the gap, no, the ocean. Still I enjoyed this first era of kit modelling a lot.

Skyhiker
I have the Heller version of this kit sitting on my shelf. If I could get mine to come out half as good as yours I would be super happy. You have done an amazing job on all of your builds.

Album info

Started out as a straightforward build but there was nothing in the cockpit so I added a few items and just kept going. Then it seemed a shame to box it all in so I cut away one fuselage half. There's no aftermarket, it's all scratch.
