Inspired by Christians fabulous work I got myself the Eduard PE set for Prinz Eugen and resumed work on this project. The PE is fiddly, but easy to work with. These is the most delicate PE work I did so far, but it all fits very well. It is so much fun! I should have tried it earlier.

Thanks mates! A little update. The catapult. Took me longer than expected. Fit was poor and the carped monster took it's first toll on this build 😉 Added some extra detail like the cables that pull the sled and some pressure tubes. The sled does not look like in the drawings I have... but who cares 😉

Finally some progress. Scratch build the main mast with yardarms from brass tube. Had to rework the mast because of an error in the Eduard instructions. That took me a while. Also added some bits and peaces here and there according to my references. I guess this is the "bad" influence of Christian's fabulous Belfast build 😉 It slows down the build, but it is a lot of fun and really adds some "eye candy".

Ingmar, this is an amazing progress. All clean and sharp work and a good attention to detail – for example the slightly angled railing in photo no. 20. Just a few questions, the bell is scratch build, and what do you use for rigging? One advice, paint the PE stay's dark grey or black that they match to the rest of the rig.

@Christian: The railing in pic 20 is designed in this way by Eduard. By stays you mean the "things" under the yardarm, where you can stand on? For the rigging I use stretched sprue. You already mentioned two alternatives on my Fletcher build. But I think I'll stick to it for this build. If I look at my reference and see all these lines and antennas I get nightmares from it 😉 It will be a big challenge but it will look stunning, if I get it right. But it's a long way to go, till rigging can start in earnest.

Motivated by Christians progress on his Belfast I could no longer find excuses and after one day of drilling minute holes and folding PE the complete light AA armament of Prinz Eugen is now finished. Paint is already on. Pictures will follow shortly.

@thomas: I use the Kagero Book as reference. It comes together with some 2d drawings. I can't comment on accuracy. But it shows every detail you could think of. Absolutely worth the money if you plan to do more than an out of box build.

🙂 Thx Holger and Christian. Added some color to the AA mounts ans installed some of them. Most are just loosely placed for the pictures as they will interfere with mounting the railings. The yellow life-rafts give just the right amount of color to all the Grey. Still some washings to do and a lot more small parts like all the boats, cable reels, and not to forget a lot of railings and rigging. I got myself some "rig that thing" in three diameters and are very eager to give it a try. I'll try to keep up a slow but steady pace now since I really want this ship finished for our next show at the end of October. And thanks again for all your kind comments!

Ingmar, that looks brilliant! Please allow me to note some points, be careful with black washes, that will ruin your fine paintwork. Use grey washes toned down with white or light grey wash. This much better simulate a 3D effect to the surface. Second, you should replace the 20mm AA gun barrels by brass parts from MASTER. I guess they have 20mm barrels too!?

🙂 nothing goes unnoticed! I think I have the right barrels already but somehow decided to skip on them after all the other barrel changing. But you are right... why "ruin" everything for those 4 barrels 😉
The wash is actually a dark Grey. Maybe I'll use a lighter grey next time. but this time I'll stick to it. I'm afraid that otherwise you'll notice a difference in the "old" and "new" parts. I also just noticed that the tension in the superstructure parts riped of part of the superglue along with the paint. You can see that in pic 29 around the base of turret B. So next time I'll have to be more careful and use masking and plastic cement I guess. It's my first "big" ship and you need different techniques as with tanks 🙂 lesson learned.
The show is Faszination Modellbau in Friedrichshafen am Bodensee. It's a big show but mainly RC stuff and trains. Only a few scale modeling clubs. But it's close to us so we go with it. If everything works out, she might be traveling to Munster with me next year.

Oh yes I noticed the upcoming upper work. I had the same fear on my Belfast. The middle deck section has a tricky fit with all the painting before and some other reasons. I used plastic cement in combination with bolts and nuts and superglue. It is now fixed for some weeks and – knock on wood – everything is fine. But even you use plastic cement, if there is a tension it will break of one day. I always try to support it by screws, nuts and bolts, first of all on ship models made of resin.

If you want to repair it, cut of carefully the ripped of paint – do you use Acrylics or enamels?. Add, carefully PVA glue along the seam line and then repaint deck and upper works along the repaired edge. That should work well.

I use acrylics except for the washes. I think I will leave it be for the moment. Also thank you for your tips! I noticed you were using bolts on your Belfast but then it was to late. As I said, you need different techniques for ships. For my AFV I usually glue everything together and paint afterwards. That works very well for me. But with a ship you have to take a different approach. Next time I will do a bit more planing. Z31 and Graf Spee (with real wood deck - another first) are already waiting in the stash but for now let's focus on getting this job done 😉

Some progress on the Prinz Eugen. Finished the ship's boats in the last days. Also spend a lot of time to mount all the small parts on the ship. Thats the nice thing with ships. Once you are through with all the tedious detail work you see huge progress in little time. Pictures are a bit behind the actual progress because I'm so into building, that I forget to take pictures. Only some minor details to add, then I can start the rigging process. Really looking forward to finishing this project.

😉 Christian, I know what you are saying. I had the same thought...after I did the rigging on the crane. I guess I was a bit impatient then because I wanted to try the "rig that thing" filament. But I can assure you, that the cranes are painted in the meantime and it went better then I feared. But yes, thats one thing to consider in the future.

Thx mates! At the moment I'm a bit frustrated. In Pic 47 you can se some lines with lots of sag in them - that's what I wanted to achieve. But over night all these lines have stretched themselves! I'm using rig that thing because at the Moment I'm not able to stretch sprue in a way, that it represents the sag. There is always some "curling" which is ok, if you straighten it with some heat but what does not help if you want realistic sag. Any Ideas?

Well Ingmar, with greatest respect, this is one of the best floating things I have seen so far! Very clean and sharp work on combination with a lot of extra details and a very good paint work. A truly fine representation of the lucky prince! You raise the bar high now mate

About your problem with rig that thing. That stuff will not really work with a sag even small. You should try to use stretched sprue! You need some time to get it right but it is it worth! Take a look to Jim Baumann's excellent explanation about rigging with stretched sprue but without to be to frustrated, because he is the master of stretch sprue🙂
He had shown to me how it works, it looks so easy when he did it and even with practice I'm not able to stretch the sprue as thin and straight as he did.

Stretched spru is definitely something that you can't practice enough, considering how much we all have at our disposal. !🙂
I have found that as soon as you have pulled both ends apart, lay the result on a cool surface immediately to cool it off rapidly and maintain the "Pull" on both ends until it is cool.:-/
That way, there is no "Curling" or distortion and it will stay as straight as you pulled it. 🙂.
Then cut to length as you need it.

@Kerry the trick is not to pull both ends! Heat the end tip of a sprue once soft enough dip the end onto your cutting mat and pull the sprue fast but controlled as far as you can before it get cold and will break. Hold tension in the sprue as long as possible. Try it some time and you'll get a thin and straight stretched spru. Take a look to the master of stretched sprue:

I'm a bit speechless. Such nice comments from you! I see so many flaws in the build. Maybe I raise my own bar to high for myself 😉 But I guess it's allays the same. You'll always know which detail you didn't fix or where you cheated a bit. I learned so many things during this build. There where also a lot of longer breaks. But in sum it was and is still a lot of fun. And don't get me wrong! I'm very pleased how everything turned out so far. You can look at the ship for a long time and you'll discover new details all the time.
@Choppa & Kerry: I did nit try the tip with the hot water and a curved surface yet, but your comments made me try the stretched sprue again. This time the result is much better. I only get one good stretched piece out of five, but with that there is no more curling. And it's much easier to represent the right amount of sag with it. I already replaced 4 lines with stretched sprue one day ago and they all are still ok. So I guess I will rip of all of the rig that thing stuff (except where there has to be a straight line) and go with stretched sprue.
@Christian: Thank you for the link. I read it with great interest. I might have to try his technique for tightening the lines one day! And also thank you for your very kind words, your support and your inspiring Belfast build, which made me come back to the bench more than once.
Enough of words for now. There is more sprue to be stretched 😉

More rigging done. Getting better at this stretched sprue stuff. So far it looks great. Only one or two lines have a little dent or did not sit very well. Yesterday I did one of those triple antennas and it went far better than feared. Hope I don't rip it of in an accident 🙁

DONE! - Es ist vollbracht.
Finally managed to attach the last lines, complete the ship's plane and mounted it to it's final base. This build took me little under two years - on and off. Many thanks to all mates who encouraged and motivated me to keep on with this project through comments and through your own work. After my Tamiya Tirpitz wich I build when I was 15 this was my first real attempt (almost 20 years later). I made mistakes, did things twice, repainted often, learned and practiced a lot. All in all this build was a lot of fun. I think many of you will know the feeling if after hours of struggling with some fiddly pieces (you first thought you would never get right) you look at your own work and think: Wow! How cool is that!

What is the best approach for gluing on and adding paint to the photo etch railings? Maybe, best if having a wooden deck, that could be glued on AFTER gluing + airbrushing all the photo etch railings?

I mean, I wouldn't want to glue on and paint the photo etch railings, and THEN try mask the model so that I could paint the flat deck surfaces.

@Treehugger: I can only tell you what works for me. I glue the railings as one of the last steps. If possible I paint deck houses separately and glue them to the painted deck or the wood deck. It would be quiet impossible to mount wood deck after railing!
I paint the railing while still on the PE fret. Use an airbrush, as with a brush paint will be to thick. Then I glue the railing to the deck with super glue. Where the paint got damaged I touch up with brush. I also touch up the places where you see super glue on the hull. Where there is super glue on the deck, you can use some matte varnish to touch up and hide it. I hope that explanation helps.

Ice, believe me, if you know where to look you can find the glue 😉
Most of it is overpainted or at least touched up with matte varnish to hide the glossiness of the glue. Using super thin glue and as little as possible also helps.

Thanks! No sailing ship planned for the near future 😉 The only skill involved is patience - a lot of patience and of course good references.
I think the camouflage on the Arado is actually hand painted - but I'm not sure. It's been a while....
