Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk.I (Scale Resin)

Album image #1
Nice box art from Scale Resin.

Album image #2
Beautiful detail - the casting is exquisite. But...we'll see some issues later.

Album image #3
Nice stickers, photoetch, and masks, but only one vac canopy. Hope I don't screw it up!

Album image #4
Fuselage was removed from the blocks by CMR, leaving some nastiness to clean up.

Album image #5
The bottom of the port wing fold needs to look like...

Album image #6
...the bottom of the starboard wing fold. Break out the sanding sticks.

Album image #7
Done! Just keep sanding until the resin gets paper thin and then disappears.

Album image #8
Cockpit detail is really nice.

Album image #9
What looks like a Martel TV screen is just the 1960s era radar.

Album image #10
Almost cleaned up. You have to work on each area separately, and test fit like a madman.

Album image #11
Colour PE! Too bad it's the wrong colour. Buccaneer pits were not Interior Grey Green!

Album image #12
All you can do is paint over it with Dark Admiralty Grey - the correct colour.

Album image #13
The detail really comes out after painting.

Album image #14
Really nice.

Album image #15
Port sidewall.

Album image #16
Starboard sidewall.

Album image #17
The top of the front wheel well will need to be sanded down a bit in order to make the cockpit fit.

Album image #18
Check out the PE on the front port console - it's a Ninja Frisbee of Death! Throw it at your adversary when you're out of ammo.

Album image #19
Seats will need to be modified in order to be correctly offset from each other. I had to do this on the older S.Mk.2 kit too.

Album image #20
I added some blanks to ensure the exhaust cans did not fall into the fuselage.

Album image #21
Cockpit coming alive with PE, detail painting, decals, and a wash.

Album image #22
The white switches add a nice contrast.

Album image #23
Everything fits well after some sanding. This "modify to fit" phase was minimal.

Album image #24
I think it looks quite nice.

Album image #25
CMR recommends 27 g of weight up front - I added 30 g to be on the safe side.

Album image #26
Next step in closing the fuselage is to tape everything together.

Album image #27
I'll work on one area at a time, removing the tape and applying CA to the seam with a scalpel blade. This allows each area to be aligned before moving on to the next area.

Album image #28
Once the fuselage is together, I applied some putty to smooth the seams. The large area in front of the intake will actually be hidden by the intake cone, but I filled the defect anyway.

Album image #29
Starboard side fit much better, remember all of the casting block clean up was on the port side.

Album image #30
Landing gear doors have a really nice, thin lip around the edge, just like the real thing.

Album image #31
However, a portion of the casting block remains on the outside, and it will need to be removed.

Album image #32
Bomb bay added. I wish they had designed the model so this could rotate like the real thing!

Album image #33
Interior of intakes painted with a metallic brown to mimic the resin used.

Album image #34
Engine faces ready for installation at the rear of the intakes.

Album image #35
The brick has legs. The black resin is much stronger and won't sag or deform over time.

Album image #36
The vertical and horizontal tail pieces fit reasonably well. I painted some areas to see if more work is needed.

Album image #37
Air brake strakes are "wafer thin!" Very delicate and easy to damage.

Album image #38
Removing the reinforcing plate for the carrier trials aircraft - quite nerve-wracking!

Album image #39
She's ready for primer!

Album image #40
And she looks much better with a coat of paint.

Album image #41
Now it's time to check all the seams...

Album image #42
...and do some additional inscribing of panel lines. Then she will get her final coat of white.

Album image #43
The demister on the windscreen was not moulded well, so I removed it and will replace with photoetch.

Album image #44
Adding some detail painting to the coaming before the windscreen goes on.

Album image #45
Blending the windscreen to the fuselage with some spackle.

Album image #46
It smoothes out with a dampened paintbrush.

Album image #47
Finally some anti-flash white!

Album image #48
Light Admiralty Grey (I used Gunze H417) in the gear and bomb bays.

Album image #49
Transfers applied, but I think it is too much monotone - it's all white!

Album image #50
A light grey wash was used to break up all of the white - more work to do here!

Album image #51
A darker grey wash used in the bays.

Album image #52
Detail painting in the radar section of the front fuselage.

Album image #53
The oil-based protective layer applied to the air brakes during carrier trials was simulated with Gunze H344.

Album image #54
Seat modification to permit the lateral offset seen in Buccaneer cockpits.

Album image #55
Hey, let's put the rest of this thing together!

Album image #56
Martin Baker bang seats ready to go.

Album image #57
Concrete practice bombs mounted in the bomb bay.

Album image #58
Photoetch support member added to aft end of lower fuselage.

Gobsmacking it is! The cast detail is incredibly crisp, especially for 1:72 scale. Really well done.

incredible! Plenty of details on the resin- and on your work you did in the cockpit! That will be another inspiring beauty I am sure!

seems like a mighty nice kit... beautiful work to. How do you glue the fuselage halves? Have a few resin kits myself but I always hesitate to start these... Is it better to use cyano, or 2 component glue?
7 September 2016, 14:53
Bill Gilman
I've added some new photos, the fuselage is closed and now I'll start working on adding the tail. Cheers!

Hi Bart, I use superglue (CA adhesive) unless the fit is really bad, then I will go to 2-part 5 minute epoxy. This one fit pretty good, so superglue was all that was used.

It's almost impossible to use superglue and glue the entire fuselage together at once, so I tape it together first, then work on one area at a time, first removing the tape and then applying the superglue into the seam with a #11 scalpel blade (since the rest of the fuselage is still taped together, you can't spread the seam apart much, so a thin blade is perfect to get the glue in.) Then I move on to the next area, eventually working my way all around the fuselage. Hope I explained that OK! 🙂

Thx for the explanation, will give it a try soon...

Hi mates, I've added some more pictures of the Buccaneer S.1. I've advanced to the stage where she is primed and almost ready for her coat of white. The overall white scheme carried by the aircraft used for the carrier trials aboard HMS Ark Royal is quite distinctive, and will make a nice contrast with the rest of my FAA models, which are mostly all Extra Dark Sea Grey. The instruction booklet says to use Titanium White as the colour, but I'm wondering if it should perhaps be Anti-flash White. Maybe they're the same? Cheers, Bill

Lots of progress on the Brick - I think she looks pretty good in her coat of anti-flash white. It's certainly a scheme not often seen on a Buccaneer. Not much more left to do! Cheers, Bill

Tha's done a reet crackin' job on thy Bucc, our Bill (let's see Google try and translate THAT from Blackburn!). Seriously, as beautifully hand-built as the real thing (and they say the real thing was hand-built because some of the design tolerances were so tight/poor, they literally hammered bits into place at the factory!). Great stuff as always Bill!

Thanks guys, I have to change the jury struts though - they're too long and consequently the wings aren't angled in enough. The wing tips should be closer at the top. That's what I get for using the struts that came with the S.2 kit, and copying them for the S.1. As they are, they're 18mm long, and they should be 12-13mm.

Album info

This is the new Scale Resin kit from CMR Moulding & Casting. Having also built CMR's S.Mk.2 Buccaneer I can say that this is all new tooling, and not an adaptation of the older kit. This one is better detailed, but some parts suffer from some awkward attachment points to the pour block, which the older kit didn't have. Nothing that can't be dealt with however.
