The Crusader is in the air tonight. I bought the AeroMaster decals before I saw the many kit options, so it is not certain they will get used.

I painted a lot of interior parts white. Eduard errs in displaying the landing light location. It's supposed to come on the right wheel well door, not left! Luckily, there is Primeportal, though some F-8 pictures seem lost. primeportal.net/hangar/f-8_home.htm

The fuselage is closed and the wings are completed. Some parts don't fit perfectly but it can be remedied with plasticard.

A lot of pictures about the Eduard colored ejection seat PE. The masking set is also cool, you get a double set for spraying the panel lining first.

Crisp seat and cockpit! Will keep an eye on this coming along...

Thanks for tuning in! I hope to start painting the fuselage soon.

Real nice pit and bang seat! Is this the former Academy tooling?

Nice start on that last gunfighter 👍

yep, I'll take a seat here

Take all the seats you want, people, the show is still running. Today the white primer went over the fuselage. It appears the jet exhausts fits snugly on the Tamiya turntable shaft. Primer used is a Rust-oleum rattle-can.
@Holger: no, it's ex-Hasegawa.

The yellow lines have been painted on the canopy (Eduard wanted these to be Flesh, I doubted about that) and then I started to put some dust on the panellines, followed by some post-shading.

The Light Gull grey and the shadows are sprayed on. Masking was not so hard, but I used pieces of paper to cut back on tape.

Looking very nice indeed.

The shading looks excellent - good idea to use the brown-ish color for pre shading, the blend with the grey creates a really great outcome. Good show so far! 🙂 👍

Somehow I've missed this one but now I'm in the crowd...

Thank you, guys, and anybody welcome to the show. I now painted the wing tips yellow for the VF-103 Sluggers version. Even the yellow decals I treated with the brownish pinwash. I also used Daco Strong now, so I can't move the little unit decal left to where it should be.

The shading on the yellows adds a lot of individual atmosphere to the finish. Well placed effort & nice progress overall 👍

Thanks, guys! The stencils have now all been placed, I removed a few that will necessitate a local repaint.

I seem to have botched the panel lining. I thought Humbrol enamel would wash away easily, but it's if I had used acrylic paint, it won't budge. It does with aceton, but then my Gull Grey also parts. The good news is that I ordered 4x Eduard's AIM9-D and 2x CMK Mk82 bombs, filling up the voids in this kit.

What type of clear coat did you use? If you are going to use an enamel wash, you need to use an acrylic clear coat, then removing the enamel wash will not damage the enamel paint underneath. But looking very nice.
2 August 2019, 01:32
Steven Van Dyck
It was Vallejo Gloss from a spray can, which is an acrylic coat. It is possible to scrape it from the white primer with some effort, like you see on the result picture, but not from the grey paint without showing the primer underneath.

The wash problem is solved, somebody told me to use white spirit and this had a totally different effect on the Humbrol wash. Now it was easily wiped away. This is a great relief after the uneffective attempts with benzene (doing nothing) and aceton (removing the paint with the wash). The last pics show some payload I bought.

Clifford Keesler
Glad you got your problem solved. I totally forgot to mention the white spirit. That is what I use to remove my washes. DUH!!. Dumb Me.

It looks superb now - including the perfectly added decals 👍

Thanks for the comments! 4 Sidewinders are on their way to the Crusader, with the same white primer on them. The PE jig wasn't much help, in the end I just aimed the fins myself.

I found the MERs in the mail today and started to adapt the model to receive the wing- and Y-pylons. Apparently the put all the ejector marks on the visible side of the pylons. You see pictures of what's in the Eduard set.
13 August 2019, 22:39
Steven Van Dyck
The MERs have been primed white after assembly and some scratchwork to backdate them.

Missed this one! Don't often see the last of the gunfighters built here, but you have really done a nice job on this one. I will be following along the rest of the way!

Stephan Ryll
Very nice progress Steven 👍

Steven Van Dyck
Thanks, guys! You're wellcome.

Now there is the question of installing the bomb racks on the pylons.

I have a suspicion that Eduard has constructed the old style MER wrongly on the middle of this picture. It has the attachment parts of version "a" together with those of version "b" that I built. It also seems like the MER is a bit too short for the pylon. I don't think this can be remedied now.

I painted all ordnance and rockets, it's just preparing for the decals now. I used silver and gun metal for the sidewinders and Nato Green for the bombs.

I had to remove the CMK bomb tail fins, they were completely overscale. It's as if they had originally designed them thinner, like in the instruction guide included, but then they noticed that it broke, so they had to thicken it. I replaced them with carefully inserted sheet styrene fins, so that will only mean a minimum of repainting.
28 August 2019, 22:23
Holger Kranich
You are doing a real good job on the Crusader! And the tail fins where out of scale, yes!
29 August 2019, 05:09
Urban Gardini
Well, we've seen muzzle brakes that been a bit more out of scale than these tail fins. But yes, over scale they're...

Holger Kranich
ROFL! 😄

Nice job with the sheet! This is going on very nicely 👍

Thanks! I just finished the decals and did a grey wash on the rockets. The Y-racks seem crooked, but this is actually logical to make room for the tank probe left.

Thanks, Jos and Clifford. The Crusader is now finished and ready for Scaleworld this Sunday. I decided to spread the two bombs because they do not even fit together on one MER. This can be caused by two options, either the MER's are too short or the bombs oversized. The lesson is, don't mingle upgrade brands if it is not necessary. I also added braking lines, scrach clearparts (couldn't find back the Eduard Sidewinder lenses, but I managed to polish something that would be hard to discern from them) and I painted the cockpit behind area. It was a fun build and I like the results, so I think it will do well at the contest.

Hello beautiful, do you fly here often? Steven, this is incredible work. Good luck on Sunday.

Great finish - the "old Navy" at it´s best 👍, the main colors + the yellow really work together perfectly & the details too all look very handsome! Have a good show at Scaleworld!

Steven Van Dyck
@Paul: thanks, I mostly roll here, but sometimes a plane will do.
@Slavo: thank you for the acclaim.
I jus noticed a detail for those who want to use MER's on the Crusader: apparently I still used too many parts on them. I found a pic where the bombs only connect with the two bomb contact points. The four MER contacts are probably used on more modern designs. It would mean that you would have to insert wires into the bomb and the MER to have a sound connection.
