A nice project with a nice selection of after market products!
24 May 2015, 11:49
Urban Gardini
This for sure is one to follow! I'm gonna build mine in SEA but if I'm to build a second C I'm gonna do with the same version due to it's unusual paint scheme.
24 May 2015, 11:52
Choppa Nutta
wow ! no expense spared on this one !
But then I am a peasant and thus easily impressed 🙂
I had a moment of geekery, I had to add it all up and it works out at 152.31 Euros !!

Derived from the cheapest listing in the SCM database, no doubt you could find them cheaper especially if you're patient but even so, an impressive commitment to a 1:48th scale model !! 😄

Anyhow, I shall watch with interest as this is my favorite Phantom and I really fancy this kit ! 😄
24 May 2015, 12:00
Urban Gardini
But Choppa! I got mine with a 32% discount on the price direct from Eduard as an BFC when I ordered it during the VE celebration! Besides that I got my stuff with free postage as well as I ordered stuff for a minimum of €100. Oh boy, it's sweet to be a BFC-member and I think that David is that as well...
24 May 2015, 12:06
Urban Gardini
More rabbits to the people!
24 May 2015, 12:07
Choppa Nutta
yeah that does sound cool, and a sensible way to do it too 🙂
Had a feeling that might be the case as there aint many dummies on SCM 😄
managed to get a few really good bargains off Ebay re. Eduard stuff 🙂

So what does it take to be a Bunny Fighter ?
24 May 2015, 12:09
Urban Gardini
The only thing it takes to be a bunny is a dedication to all things Eduard and the sacrifice of your first unborn money...
24 May 2015, 12:12
Choppa Nutta
woooo, now thats what I call commitment !! 😄
24 May 2015, 12:17
Christian Ristits
Wow, this will be very interesting, I will take a seat and watch!
24 May 2015, 14:39
David Lengyel
I'm glad you find this project interesting chaps 🙂 Since there will be many add-ons, I've decided to start with the fiddly bits to ease the pain on the finish line. Aerobonus MER and TER cast parts are true gems and I think it's almost a shame to put any ordnance on them.
24 May 2015, 18:41
Choppa Nutta
make some bomb trolleys and set it all on a mini diorama 🙂

Hi David, this looks extremely tempting! Keep up the good work!
1 June 2015, 11:01
Choppa Nutta
I can't work out how you are going to paint the cockpit now that you have glued it altogether ?
1 June 2015, 12:19
Urban Gardini
It's not glued together. The fuselage on the kit is broken down with a whole upper part.
1 June 2015, 12:43
Choppa Nutta
ah yeah of course ! what a dummy ! 🙂
I forgot the fuselage is split horizontally, I thought the sanding was super smooth..... doh ! 😄
1 June 2015, 12:50
Holger Kranich
The fit seems to be outstanding and remarkable!
1 June 2015, 13:13

Wow, there is a lot oft inspiration and knowledge inside! You show us how to do it right!
1 June 2015, 13:24

Rhino finally has its shape 🙂
21 September 2015, 08:13
Kerry COX
The 'Spook' in the tail pipe is a nice touch, and all that brass is just stunning. Long live the man in the big hat. LOL 🙂
I love it David. 🙂 👍
21 September 2015, 08:37
David Lengyel
After some time off the bench because of running scale model show event and necessary education which allow me to lead scale modeling club for kids and youth, I'm back on the Rhino project. As shown on pictures, Rhino underwent some treatment over seams which means lots of tiny repairs because of bubbles in resin parts or screwed up lines (my bad). A couple of final adjustments and it will get an overall bad ass black coat.
19 November 2015, 09:45
John Thomas
Nice work
19 November 2015, 13:01
David Lengyel
Still adjusting the surface. It grinds my gears when I find some fading lines or rivets or my errors, but I need to have it perfect before surfacer. Between swearing and sanding some detail works on various areas to calm down a little bit 🙂
7 December 2015, 12:27
David Lengyel
Finally, primer is on! 😉
10 December 2015, 10:28
Bart Goesaert
great progress on this bird... was there a lot of sanding involved to get such a smooth surface?
10 December 2015, 10:44
David Lengyel
@Bart Thank you mate. You can check previous pictures. Surface of the plastic parts was kind of coarse here and there, so I've sanded it as a whole, let alone extensive usage of resin parts for seamless intakes and vertical stabilizer pivot.
10 December 2015, 10:48
John Dunbar
Superb build! Very clean! 👍 👍
10 December 2015, 11:30

I don't know how I missed this one, but I must say that You have done a wonderful job so far. Especially on the cockpit which looks awesome. Just keep on the good work. 👍

Really nice progress so far David!
7 February 2016, 23:45
David Lengyel
Back to Rhino for a while. Custom die-cut masks (aka replacement of the largest decals) arrived, so I've masked off all the metallic elements, added some chipping medium over the planned worn & torn areas on the top of the jet intakes and around the refueling receptacle and placed masks which should turn out as a black lettering on the wings and the fuselage. All set for Mr. Paint love 🙂
7 February 2016, 23:47
Ronan Donohoe
Very nice! What make are the seamless intakes?
8 February 2016, 00:02
David Lengyel
@Roman: XMM
8 February 2016, 00:03
Ronan Donohoe
Thanks! I'll keep them in mind when I manage to get around to the Da Nang F-4 I have in my stash!
8 February 2016, 00:27
Kerry COX
I keep looking for the difference between the Academy kit and the Eduard kit, and, I really can't see any, unless you can enlighten me as to what they are David. :-/
All the PE has given the build so much 'depth'. I am impressed. 🙂 👍
8 February 2016, 04:06
David Lengyel
@Kerry Diffeence is yet to come: resin nozzles, ejection seats and wheels. Not much to spot, but that's the only difference along with new decals.
8 February 2016, 08:17
Jens
Ohhh David, your garage must have become greater, so many projects at the same time 👍 👍
But Jet's, not my prey
how the Mr. Paint Color process compared with Gunze and Alclad colors?
8 February 2016, 08:32
Clifford Keesler
Amazing work,I like it a lot.
8 February 2016, 21:46
David Lengyel
@Jens I don't have garage 😄 Mr. Paint is similar to Alclad = ready to use, from the bottle straight to the aibrush and work. Easy peasy.

@Clifford Cheers mate 😉

Julian Herrero aka Yuri
I there ... pls ... where can I buy Mr. Paint ?
9 February 2016, 08:39

Thanks David, now look where I'm going to try English biplane would be a lure, and in Cheb should indeed be able to show what 🙂 😉

9 February 2016, 20:19

@Christian Hahaha, thanks mate 😄

I've uploaded new picture of Phantom with all masks up and ready to receive the glorious U.S. Navy Light Gull Gray paint.
15 February 2016, 08:37
Clifford Keesler
Looking very impressive.
15 February 2016, 14:54
David Lengyel
@Clifford Thank you mate 🙂

Light gull gray laid down, not finished yet, but the overall appearance is done I guess. I didn't mean to exaggerate the shadows and lights, so this is pretty much it. Port drop tank received shark and some chipping. I've also had a test drive with the upcoming wet transfer stencils from HGW and it turned out to be freaking awesome!
18 February 2016, 09:31
Kerry COX
I got the same bomb racks as you David, and the detail is awesome. 🙂
18 February 2016, 10:12
David Lengyel
Here comes the paint! 😄

@Kerry Cool, huh? 😉
19 February 2016, 08:31
Kerry COX
Yes mate, I was most impressed with them, and the bombs I have left over from my F-4G, especially the 'Snake Eye", it will be something great to look at. 🙂

Great! I like the painting. 👍
20 February 2016, 21:09
David Lengyel
Roundels and lettering adjusted, heck of a load of stencils added in form of HGW wet transfers and Furball decals. Some chipping added as well, but I will redo that I guess. Next stage: weathering.
27 February 2016, 11:14
Kerry COX
I love scar tissue, LOL, and this bird has some scratches that fit so well. I like what you have done David.
Salute. 👍 🙂
27 February 2016, 12:51
Soeren R.
Great!
How many stencils hast the kit? 300? 🙂
27 February 2016, 13:31
David Lengyel
Thanks gents 🙂

@Sören: It's over 500 😛
27 February 2016, 13:59

27 February 2016, 20:02
Bart Goesaert
I think you've forgot a few decals... 😉

very nice work, and for painted on stars and bars (I think at least) they are very well lined out...
29 February 2016, 08:07
david
woow, looking great. Good work painting the stars and bars
29 February 2016, 08:37
David Lengyel
Thank you gentlemen. I've finished panel line wash and sealed everything with gloss varnish. I'd like to show you benefit of wet transfer application and it's superiority over traditional waterslide decals. On the shallow angle picture you can see no visible carrier film on the stencils while even die-cut mask sprayed roundel has some edge visible. Yellow marks are decals out of the box. I'm very happy with the result, although pre-production transfers had some design and color issues. Great stuff.
8 March 2016, 21:27
Kerry COX
Super good David, and I can only hope to have mine looking half as good. 🙂
Salute. 👍 👍 👍
8 March 2016, 21:32

9 March 2016, 08:09
David Lengyel
Thank you very much chaps 🙂 I love stencils, this is my favorite stage of scale modeling to be honest. Anyway, Phantom is ready for the completion. Mostly 😄 Fiddly bits, the stage I don't love.
14 March 2016, 21:36
Kerry COX
You have a great touch Dave and you will be proud of your efforts, that's for sure. 👍

Awesome job David.
15 March 2016, 00:59
David Lengyel
Thank you mates 🙂 Phantom now has all the goodies from below except ordnance and it stays on it's own legs. Just like baby after 10 months 😄
17 March 2016, 09:16
Eric RENOUX
Very good job !
17 March 2016, 09:21
Kerry COX
They reckon the Phantoms would have weighed 10 Kg lighter if they didn't have all the stencils. LOL 🙂
Your TER's look great, as all of it does mate. 👍
Looking as a phantom should David, mean and nasty. 🙂
I love it. 👍
17 March 2016, 10:37
Heikki Lankinen
Looks so good!
17 March 2016, 10:49
Bryn Crandell
This is a fabulous build. Well done David. The PE really makes the cockpit come together. What was it you used for the nose weight? Looks like a putty of some sort. Again thanks for sharing.
17 March 2016, 11:28
Urban Gardini
It could be tungsten putty as the one that I use look like that. It's by far the absolute best alternative out there for nose weight as it's much denser than lead.
17 March 2016, 11:32
Bryn Crandell
Thank you Urban.
17 March 2016, 11:34
Urban Gardini
Any well sorted sport fishing shop should have tungsten putty. It's expensive but it's the best alternative out there after all.
17 March 2016, 12:11
David Lengyel
Thank you gents 🙂

@Bryn It's basically tungsten putty as Urban said. I got mine purchased under the brand Three Green from Uschi van der Rosten. It's the best product for this task. Phantom has a big space in the nose, but this sticky clay fits everywhere, even into the busy nose of MiG-15 which is natural born tail sitter.
17 March 2016, 13:08
Urban Gardini
Three Green isn't tungsten even if it's heavy. Alexander Glass told me so when I asked when he introduced his product. But even if Three Green isn't as heavy as tungsten putty it gives you more bang for the buck as you get more putty than you get when buying tungsten putty as there I've paid 10€ for 28.35 gr (1 oz.). But perfect for notorious tail-sitters like B-24 and B-25, especially the glass nosed variants of the B-25 where there's next to no room what so ever for any nose weight.
17 March 2016, 14:08
Clifford Keesler
Masterpiece.

Great job David! A beauty! 👍
21 March 2016, 16:46
Spanjaard
completed model is impressive, but seeing the WIP make is even more interesting. what a work of art.
I have a question about the TER and MER, Aerobonus looks really good. did you use the ones of Eduard? is Aerobonus better?
2 October 2016, 08:47
David Lengyel
Thanks Spanjaard. I appreciate your kind words 🙂 Aerobonus is better detailed in my opinion. I am about to use Eduard's TER on my Skyhawk, so when it will be painted I can provide side by side comparison to give you a better idea about the fidelity of the two aftermarket sets.
2 October 2016, 11:34
Spanjaard
thanks a lot, would love to see that.
The truth being said, i purchased the eduard ones yesterday, and saw your phantom today, a bit too late. But i still want to see the difference. specially since my build is progressing slowly, so i can always get the aerobunus ones, and leave the Eduard for the future. In fact i even have an academy F-4 coming from far East, so i can choose what to use where 😉
