Wayne's World
Engine detail from above. This is why I am building two. One with tank and fairings, the other naked.
The box art
Not that many parts here. All ready for paint and glue.
3 cylinders
The engine was so narrow the bike had the same frontal area as a 250cc race bike. The gap at the bottom of the barrel was narrowed a bit but I was not able to eliminate it entirely.
5 colours went into the expansion chambers and spark arrestors.
Getting the discs right is a dream destined to never be realised. I later rubbed steel powder on the contact surfaces but I can't get the slight brown tinge that real discs get.
The gold is an SMS paint. The shock doesn't have an undercoat. The spring plate had a coat of Alclad base black. I like the darker colour.
All put together and the difference is obvious.
The fit of the two tank halves was fantastic!
Find the join!
Unfortunately the fairing halves didn't fit at all. This bit will be VERY visible, but
this bit wont be.
About as good as I could get it.
The seat was a wee bit better fit and
was a bit easier to get an acceptable join!
Spooky!
Nearly finished. Just the motor, wheels and a splash of jam and we're done!
A bit of wear needed on the sprocket and some grease residue. I wonder how I will do that?
Brake rotors have been rubbed down with Ushi steel metal powder.
Other rotor.
Coolant tanks are supposed to be black but the detail disappears. I will give it more thought.
Swing arm with suspension fitted. Different finish to the gold painted areas show the difference with Alclad black base as an undercoat on the spring plate.
DISASTER!!!!! I spilt a drop of Kicker on my thumb and it went under the thumb and dissolved the Alclad!! More thought needed here to repair .....
... not happy with this. Have to strip and re-paint the swing arm.
Happy with this side but ...
Chain looks ok from the outside but I will drill it out to get it a wee bit more genuine looking.
Major repair masked but I will sand it down before painting it again.
Alclad looks great but is so thin slight contact will wear through, just like ...
this!
Top side of the swingarm. Join is still very visible.
Let's try to do better!!
Can't accept the join can't be improved. I know! I have another kit in the stash!!
Better job here too!
Forewarned is forearmed they say. Still not perfect but much better join.
Phone cameras, ughhh! No join visible at all. Lots of sanding to do though.
Join has gone. I'll sand starting with 3400 and work up to 8000
Radiators were actually black but so many details get lost. Happy with three thin Tamiya black washes though.
Love the Alclad. So thin all the details show through.
Rear suspension in situ. I like the slight colour differences on the rear shock.
Engine detail from above. Note to self; on the unfaired version do better with the join on the carbs. That looks rushed!
I dips me lid to the Tamiya Engineers. They do a wonderful job with detail and fit. I like the different Alclad finishes on the engine parts. I will do the unfaired engine in one colour though, just so I can compare the two approaches and make my mind up
First try at upholstry. Getting the corner cuts are a skill in themselves. ALEX? HELP!!!!!!
Adding a Tamiya black wash to the radiators
Thats three washes. Think one too many.
I drilled out the drive sprocket. I hope to see the axle housing through it when assembled.
The two engines. I like the top one better. It was an experement to see which I prefer.
The naked bike (front) looks just a little bit cleaner. It's interesting how you actually get better bit by bit!
I like the subtle differences in the engine casing colours. Looks just a wee bit more realistic.
The naked bike is just a wee bit bland. I hate myself for not spending more time on the bottom of that barrel.
Brake rotors. I am getting closer to what I want to perfect. Bike rotors get a caramel colour on road bikes but race bike steel rotors are more effected by heat and get that exhaust pipe heat signature
Now wouldn't that tear the fork out of yer nightie! Bit of fixing up required!
The underbelly before I hide it with the expansion chamber
Under the swing arm
Triple carbs supply the V Triple with fuel
Never used this before. Was a little disapointed. It gave me a build up of a black carbon on the metal but, didn't turn the metal itself black.
Exhaust springs as they ended up.
There are still a couple of casings to go on but I will leave them till last as I don't want them to suffer from excessive handling.
The disc rotors have been a little project I have set myself. The one on the left has been painted with Alclad II and rubbed down with Ushi Chrome metal powder. On the right Painted with Alclad's Hot Metal Sepia then highlighted with the violet and blue.
Ride height is different as the suspension on the left isn't pushed "home" yet.
Double delight!
Comparison 1
head to head
Looks like the world's worst welding. It just wouldn't stay where I put it! I even taped and tied it in place...
Wear on the Alclad II from excessive handling is starting to appear on the frame.
Starting to look like race bikes!
They look a lot cleaner from this angle!!
Radiators
SMS Italian Redfront guards
Three coats of Alclad II Clear Gloss. The fuel tank has been sanded down to 12000 grit. I think I like the gloss finish much better!
SMS Blue lacquer was the perfect colour match. A lot of sanding needed here!
Ready for masking and the Italian Red lacquer.
Fork assembly for the faired bike. Tank and seat sanded down to 12000 grit.
Matt black inside the fairing.
This is the naked bike. Yes, the clutch cable will be re-routed.
In future cables will be in-scale on my bikes. Just plain dissapointed how these look.
Close up of engine in the chassis.
I must have hugged this tank a bit too tight. It cracked and needs repairs!
Damage to the decals because of a ham fisted modeller. I have reversed the colour scheme so the decals needed to be trimmed. I should have just cut the Honda and Emblem out. Good thing this was the practice tank!!
That looks awful! Don't look Kezza!
Fairings prepared for the first colour.
Seat units ready for the Italian red.
I need more tamiya masking tape!
Practice tank has been done with Alclad II clear gloss
Seat units done. Two options, white stripe was narrowed for the seat on the right.
This is the tank I will use. Sanded with 3200 down to 12000.
Happy with this. Much improved from first effort.
Oh dear! Back to the drawing board for the fairing.
Couple of clear coats and the seat cushions and this is done.
Lesson learned. No point swearing, if it was going to be easy there would be no point trying would there?
After the repair to the paint and most decals added.
Paint repair to come. Exactly the same issue as the left side.
Had some issues with the decals settling and ended up with a few wrinkles. The "G"s have been made using the 6 and the 5 from the decal sheet. After another two clear coats I hope they will blend a bit better.
These three shots show the completed seat unit. Decals have 2 clear coats under and another 2 clear coats over them.
Seat cushions are a stick on vinyl from Hiro. Not as easy to do as I thought.
OK, I'm happy with this.
Somehow I have to remove the blue backing from the HONDA decal and put it under the racing number "G". Twice.
If I stuff it up, start at the beginning with the "spare" fairing.
Clip ons and brake / clutch cables on naked bike.
White stripe didn't align but ...
Not too bad from this angle and,
If you close one eye a squint a bit it looks perfect from this angle!
Radiator fell off when I put the seat unit on. Chassis flex can be a bast*rd sometimes!
First HONDA nearly all cut out. Won't know if it worked until I get them out of the decal tray.
My work space
Finished and on display.

Now that's a great start buddy. No wonder you were very silent here.
Can't you give the tank a wash to get some definition on it?
For oil and grease I use this scalemates.com/colors/color.php?id=7668 Perhaps it could be used on your chain?

I've got some of that, ..... somewhere? Tank is unpainted as yet. Just glued, sanded and polished. I am not at all happy with the front of the fairing. More work to fix that! I might try filling with plastic again and letting it sit for a couple of days.

you can do some wash with some oil colors too, take for ever to dry, but you can have any shade you want. and one tube will last for many many mamny models.... be careful with aggressive white spirits (almost eat away my NXR750). For the radiator, you can drybrush in black, and keep the aluminium color in the details. paint in back and do a wash in white for example.
by the way, about washes, i tend to use flory model ones.... impossible to harm the plastic with them. and they can be removed with water if you do not like the result.

I'll 'fess up here, this is one of two to go into the same display case. One with and one without fairings. Both will be clean and polished as in a museum display. I will build and paint two fairings and use the best one. Won't be easy to do as the colours are reversed from what is on the decals.

In short...............Perfection. 👍
All I will say now is...............The decals will be brittle and possibly ready to shatter. Tons of sofftner and don't scrimp. Just load it on and WAIT for it to take effect. Remember your clear glue as a lubricant Peter.

Geeze Bart you had me floundering then! The PE parts are the handle end of glue applicators. The exhaust springs are a HIRO stock generic item and the loop brackets are scratched together.
Alex, the seat "leather" is a vinyl off the shelf self adhesive sheet. I will PM you as I need some help with something and you are the only person in the whole wide world who can assist!

Peter. PLEASE. Take extra care with these decals, because being as old as they are, they will just shatter if handled too much. Use all the softener you can and wait for it to take effect. I can't implore you enough on this matter.
OR, to protect them completly, spray a diluted coat of 'liquid Decal film' over the whole sheet and let dry.
Then cut the decal away when ready, cutting right up to the coloured edge.
Mine failed misserably, and that was years ago. 👍

how did you do the metal binders in the centre of picture 82 (the ones that hold the black pipe going to radiator)? they look real good

Bart & Kerry, I just happen to be going into town this weekend and I know where a fishing tackle shop is so I will be exploring their stocks!
Laurent, If I can achieve something like you have with your NSR I will be very happy!!
Jimbo, I know you aren't a fan of bikes but you don't have to be to enjoy the visible complexity of building them. The joy is most of the detailing you put effort into stays visible. Thanks for the wrap, appreciate it.
Spanjaard, BMF supplied by KC. I have bought some since but haven't actually used it yet. Kez warned me that there is an 'art' to using it and unfortunately I am not there yet! I still approach with enthusiasm but still feel like a klutz!!! Thanks for the positive feedback, I will surprise you one day with a well built pair of KR 500s!!

Kez, if you're going to go, GO BIG! Our "rain" in Moranbah has been a 3 day scotch mist. No puddles on the ground but things are getting green. It'll burn off when the sun comes out though. Back to the four year drought!
Chris, the pipes have been painted entirely with Alclad II lacquers.
ALC-414 Sepia with no black base. It would be too shiny with a base.
ALC-411 Red
ALC-413 Blue
ALC-417 Violet
Each colour must have time to harden or it will blend with what's already there. Not what you want so in short, patience is required.

Exhaust gasses for a modern diesel reach 600 Celsius. Not sure about the heat requirement for generating super heated steam. AND the resulting cool down up to the funnel.
Wouldn't the paint on the exterior peel off as well?

Wikipedia'd this. Firebox temp is approximately 2500C Superheater is approximately 1300-1600C. Haven't found exhaust temperatures yet. Temps are a bit higher than I imagined!

Martin and Lode, I am pretty sure that the temp at the top of the funnel would be still hot but doubt it would be that hot to discolour the metal. If it was I doubt gunners would be manning gun mounts attached to the funnel.
Thomas, thanks for the encouragement mate. I have some issues as a builder which I am still to beat but some new skills are coming through. I hope I will one day be up there with you and KC!
DD II. If it isn't black it isn't a Harley. There aren't many Harley kits around so the choice is limited. I'm not a Harley fan but have a Road Train Driver here that wants me to build him one.

After my extensive experience building Honda bikes (yes, the one), I can only say that I'm once more very impressed by your bike building skills Buddy. Sometimes a bit of stumbling improves the walking abilities. First walk, then run 🙂 You are running quite fast 👍

thumbs up for the Honda cutting... becoming a real masterpiece. Haven't seen it in the other pictures, but one of the coolers in front has a mold-line which is rather prominent, the other one seem to have it removed (pic 65/107/108)

Bart, yep you caught me! I decided not to redo it because it will be behind the fairing. It is prominent though. No one in this house will give it anymore than a casual glance and a cursory "Yes, very nice dear, will you take the rubbish out now please"? Why I live and die on things like his I dunno, unless you are a modeller you wouldn't actually notice! What I have struggled with on this build is excessive handling of the model and wearing the paint.
Thanks Kez, I'll google the brand and buy in some stocks! I also thought I'd look for some braided line. I did buy some Tamiya product but it was way oversized for bikes.

Martin, just go to the beach and turn left. I'll be down that way somewhere.
I was over there a year ago for my honeymoon. Watched a bloke pour a bottle of Alka Seltza down a hole in the ground and all this water came spewing out. He called it a geyser. Think I'd rather have just stayed in Auckland and had a beer with Jimbo.
