M M First time airbrushing. I didn't want to just learn to spray on a bottle or such so i bought a $5 kit from the LHS. OMG I wish I had one sooner! Going to do a test on a body next.

Because I am crazy and OCD I decided to do some weathering as well. Battle damage. Busted fender. Soot, dust, and mud. I love it. I think I might make a little diorama for it.

Olivier Bitten by the airbrush bug, are we ?
19. February at 18:27:01
M M :) yes! It's so smooth. And it doesn't flood the little details like a rattle can.
19. February at 18:28:24
Olivier I tried once but then went back to brushes. Will have to be more persistent...
19. February at 18:31:30
Chris Greathouse Wow.... Insane small, looks good :D
19. February at 18:33:47
M M Thanks Chris! It was so much fun and for 5 bucks if I cocked it up I wasn't going to cry.

Olivier, really it makes a difference on covering large areas. I really enjoy brush painting but couldn't find a good thinner to paint ratio to not get brush strokes on large areas. This for me is worth it.

If you want to see a better build description with photos that are oriented correctly here is the link to my build.

Geoff Cant Hey how you doing - looking to start this kit myself - you got the instructions in English?
5. February at 21:12:51
M M Geoff. They are pictorial but yes. I will take a photo and upload them tomorrow. I am having a hell of a time uploading photos of instructions to the actual kits. Tim has been trying to help me out. Not sure what the issue is.

3. February at 22:25:44
Chris Greathouse Awesome!!! I can't believe that's all brushed, looks better then most of my airbrushed stuff :P Well done mate :)
3. February at 22:54:56
Chris Greathouse wait.... you did the whole kit since thursday when you got back from your trip?? if so, daaamn dog.
3. February at 22:56:34
M M Thanks Chris. The body (green) was painted with a rattle can, the rest was brushed. I am not happy with some parts of it but like I said I enjoyed myself. :). I actually started this kit on about 1/28. I had work in between, away as you know, but yeah it was a fast build. I spent more time waiting for paint to dry than I did building. LOL. I think its about 25 pieces? The Ford GT has taken much longer but it also is more than double the number of parts. Also, my wife and kids are out of town... I have had a lot of free time LOL

Robert Hall Q-tip dipped in thinner.
20. January at 02:26:10
M M Thanks Robert. I wanna wait for the paint to finish drying and will try that
20. January at 02:52:04
M M Photo update. I had been quietly working on detail paint and this morning after breakfast we put some parts together. I still have to detail up the steering wheel before the cockpit is finished and then work on the front suspension and the brakes and all of the dress up painting will be finished. I am slowly working on the exterior. There are a lot of decals I have to put on and I had an issue with overspray. Robert, I tried the thinner, it was too slow on the TS paints so I used 92% Rubbing alcohol, this seems to do the trick but it takes a lot of elbow grease. I found some decals on the engine I was missing so I put those on and then the kids got to work. My youngest son was interested but for just a minute. He installed the pedals. He is only 3 after all. The oldest was there with me the whole time. There were a few parts where I had to get the parts to snap together but he was on the rest of it. I would say this is turning out to be pretty nice! If I can recover the outside of the frame I will be really happy.

I really like the way the underside turned out. I laid down some flat aluminum and then chrome over it to get the nice color. I also used a little panel line paint on the underside of the A-arms. I imagine this will be finished in the coming weekends.
20. January at 17:24:31
M M Started another project while finishing this one up. Album to follow shortly. While my primer on the other car was drying I knocked out some detail paint on brakes and rotors. I put in all the intake covers and glued them in. I also touched up the steering wheel. I have to throw down some decals and then put on the clear. Then just wait for my kids to get home so they can finish putting it together. It's really starting to look good with all the tidbits on the body. The only "hard" part I am going to run into is clear coating the back "bumper" with out flooding it. I don't think i should install it before I clear the body because there are a few crevices that won't get clear.
28. January at 15:06:14
Tom Got'a keep the pipeline going!
28. January at 16:24:01
M M I got the decals laid and the clear coat on. I used the Microscale Industries products to get them to lay down nice. I think i put down at least 25+ and that wasn't all of them. The 1:1 car that I am modeling it on didn't have the "Gulf" logos on there so I left them off. Then after three coats of Tamiya TS-13 she is waiting to cure. I did spy two little dust motes so it will get a light sanding and polishing once it's cured. When my little ones get home I will have them put it all together and then take photos for our reveal.

I have primary Tamiya acrylics for painting. I recently found a hobby shop in town I would like to try out and they only carry Mr Hobby paints. Anyone have problems using Mr Hobby clear over Tamiya acrylics? I see that the Aqueous is water based, I figured they be compatible.

January 21, 2019

Trying to find a way to use my Tamiya Panel Line paint over some flat acrylic. Can I brush paint X-22 clear over my color and then use my panel line paint? Every time I try to use Tamiya thinner (x-20a) to clean up my excess panned line paint it wipes up my base coat. Maybe I am using the wrong type of thinner to clean up the excess panel line paint?

My process has been base coat Tamiya XF-68, Tamiya panel line accent, Tamiya thinner to wipe excess. It’s wiping everything (rightfully so).
21. January at 20:54:03 Share
Flop_Se May you have to try enamel thinner or odorless thinner, or may be lighter petrol to clean the wash up
21. January at 21:06:53
M M Is the clear step required? I have some order less thinner I will repaint and try again
21. January at 21:24:14
Flop_Se I spray after the required base colors the clear coat (for example x22). Than i apply the wash (enamel or thinned oil colors) the important is, that your protecting clear coat not a enamel based color is. Otherwise the enamel thinner (which you use to wipe off the wash) will attacks your clear (acrylic) coat. I hope that will help you!

10. January at 22:00:56
Tom Exciting! Welcome to Scalemates. Totally new to modeling or, like myself, did you used to build them in the distant past?
10. January at 22:58:10
M M @Tom when I was a young kid I use to build a lot. I have fond memories of building in the back yard. My mom didn't want all those "fumes" in the house. Recently I have been building in 1/10th scale RC. According to my friends I am a "scale nerd" because I like things to look like they should. I take the time to detail up parts. Anyways after watching my youngest kid build up a Revell Junior Kit I thought it was time to do some static models myself. Cheers!
