B-52H Stratofortress - wip
Started my project with a very noticeable detail of the "BUFF", the stressed skin on large areas of the fuselage.
Done withe the "stressed skin" on the whole fuselage.
Some details need to be added or redone for the early B-52H.
Adding the ECM antennas useing Mr.Surfacer 1000.
The finished tail cone, changed the antenna cover on both sides, added the ECM panels, rescribbed some covers and the door of the brake chute housing.
Next up is the cockpit area, in which some panel lines need to be revised and supplemented.
FLIR / camera fairings are way too small.
Some sheet will bring it closer to the original shape and size.
Sanding, Mr.Surfacer, sanding, Green Putty, sanding, ...
After a first layer of Tamiya White Prime L it looks not too bad to me.
Test fit of the cockpitsection.
Added some panel lines around the nose and the navigator emergency exit.
Pilots emergency exit was too small.
Some details need to be revised.
The air inlets were drawn and cut with a silhouette plotter.
Eduards etched instrument panels are worth their price, looks much better than the etched parts from the kit.
Some scratch work on the inside of the fuselage halfs.
Finished with the little details on the fuselage.
Modelcollect adds ACES II ejection seat for the upper deck to the kit, the ones for the lower deck look more like the Weber seats which are used also on the flightdeck of the Buff. I will try to use them for the pit.
Modification on the first seat is done, looks proper to me.
Both seats ready for paint.
Added the etched seatbelts from the Eduard set and release handles made from 0,1mm steel rod.
Fortunately, everything fits in the cockpit 🙂
The jumpseat came together.
Added all the parts to the cockpit, ejection seats, control horns, instrument panels.
Closed the cockpit section, fit is okay, some gaps need to be filled.
Added the thermal curtains which are visible in most B-52 pictures.
Last few gaps were closed.
Added the engraving for the refueling receptacle and the plate whiche closes the little overhead window on the B-52G and -H.
Finished the cockpit section.
Main parts for wheel wells and undercarriage.
R
There are only little glueing points between the legs and the support structure, I don´t think this sollution will carry the weight of the finished model. Modelcollect gives you the taxi lights on all four legs, so they must be removed and bring the piston in shape again.
I used a piece of 1.5*1.5mm polystyrol to support the connection between legs and structure. One taxilight was added on the front starboard undercarriage.
Finished the landing gears and the wheel wells. I added not to much details as most will be hidden inside the fuselage after finishing.
The last time the BUFF will be handy ... 🙂
Modelcollect did the wing spoilers in wrong size and weak details.
New engraved seven spoilers.
The "feathers" were made with my Silhouette cutting machine.
Comparison between Modelcollects version and mine...
The engine inlets are poorly designed.
With some plastic sheet the looks more like the original Pratt & Whitney TF33.
Result from a f hour of work
The inlets for the eight engines were painted in Alclad Magnesium to give them a dark metallic look.
The engine nacelles were put together and the cuted inlets were glued in place. The front was feeded up with plastic sheet and will be sanded in form when dried.
All four engine nacelles are now done.
The exhausts were modified useing wire end ferrules.
Nice size comparison, a 1/72 Smart.
Nearly finished the eight engines, only a few small gaps needs some filling before they're already done.
Started work on the twelve AGM-129, details are here very poor as on many sections of the kit.
On the upper side there are some panellines that should be added.
The belly needs way more work, the whole air intake is missing on the kit parts.
I did one AGM-129 in flight to see how the improvements works.

Finished the tail cone of the BUFF, now it will fit an early -H model. Next step will be the cockpit section where some panel lines are missing too.

You're doing a lot of "home improvement" on this kit, hats off! Do you already know where you will keep/display the finished model?

Thanks Stefan and Bernd.
...and, no, I got absolutely no clue where to display the finished BUFF. 🙂

Really nice start on your BUFF. Unfortunately this kit and the Italeri releases both have issues with accuracy. Your attention to detail is fantastic and love the stressed skin effect. Looking forward to the rest of your build Daniel.

Thanks Gary. Yes, your right with the weak details. I expected way more from this kit, it's a bit disappointing.

I'd like to follow, please. This one intrigued me compared to the older 72nd moulds.

Thx guys 👍
@Andy yeah, Modelcollect is probably the better choice, even if there are weaknesses in some details.
@Lukas ...our monthly modeller meeting 😉

Moved on with the huge weapon bay of the BUFF. The rotary launcher will not be installed as I will build my B-52 carrying the AGM-129 which was only mounted on the wing pylons.

Great work so far. I built an old Monogram BUFF when I was a kid and even in 1/72 scale, they are big kits.

Definitely some great progress reagarding the surface rework and also the detailwork in the cockpit - really eager to see how everything will turn out in the end, so I'll stay here until then! 👍

@John G thanks, yeah, the BUFF is a big bird in this scle, have to look for a place to display it soon.
I´ve always looked at the kits of the B-52 in the hobby shop, ut never bought one in my early modelling days.

Btw, you might want to check out the HBO tv-movie By Dawn's Early Light (1990) (With James Earl Jones and a few other familiar faces like Rebecca De Mornay).

Re. photo 56. Did you plan to do more with the burred out lines on the sides, or did you maybe forget about them? A stressed metal effect I think it must be.

@Gary thx👍
@Treehugger the stressed skin is already done on the whole fuselage but it´s a bit hard to see in the pictures.

If you mean the engine nacelles, they are only hold together by the clamp, the fitting will be not so bad when glued.

After a while I managed to get on with the engines, after control painting, filling, sanding, painting, filling and again sanding, I´m near to the end with them.

Btw, a small brush is very handy when working with sanding to clean out panel lines filled with plastic dust. Tamiya is selling one, but I also bought a cheap make up brush for this purpose.
