Amazing work on this experimental camo design by McClelland Barclay.

Great job, a good reminder of the USN Barclay color experiments. Such a pity that they wasted all of that effort by deciding to go with that bland overall Light Gray. These Barclay paint schemes scattered all over the fleet on carriers all done up in Dazzle Camo would have been so cool looking.

@ Mike: My girlfriend is a former paratrooper and camouflaged her assault rifle with pink plush, so she would admire such a build for her! LOL 😄

@Mike - What tape did you use for the mask? I'm working on a battleship with Measure 32 camo in 1:700 scale. The masking is driving me a little batty and I'd enjoy some fresh ideas.

@John I used Tamiya tape, but in sheet form. It's available in 8.5" x 11" sheets. I created artwork for the pattern in a vector drawing program, then laser printed it onto the Tamiya sheet and cut out the various masks with either a scalpel, or a circular cutter. I've tried lots of different masking tapes but always come back to Tamiya.
The other masking medium I use a lot is Parafilm, especially for canopies, but it's not as good for camo as it has to be cut once it's in place on the model. It needs a really light touch with the blade to avoid cutting into the plastic.

Thanks @Mike. Trying Parafilm now but the stretching, application and cutting take some getting used to as you say. Should have built the ship and painted in subassemblies; the retrospectoscope is 20/20.

Album info

The old Airfix kit, finished in one of the experimental McLelland Barclay schemes from the early 40s. The kit was re-scribed, cockpit detail added, and the scheme itself was all masked and painted.
