When ICM announced the KFK in scale 1/144 I definitely want this kit. On my desk since a couple of week I recently started the kit. Not bad at all, the kit comes with a nice hull, and deck section and fine details here and there. But for that scale I am missing finer details on some of the parts, f.e. the railing is much to thick, and the rafts are missing ropes and other details. But anyhow, it is a nice kit and missing details can be replenished or optimized from scratch. I am not sure if someone will make a PE Set foir the kit, so time will tell.
Happy Modelling, Christian

Thank you Bruce, still not there. The longer I look the more I found to improve 😄

Zeigen schon, aber der Unwissende wird sie dann nicht mehr erkennen und für Bestandteile des Grundbausatzes halten. Jetzt ist das aufgrund des Materialmixes eindeutig.

@Bruce, nope it is a product made by MASTER from Poland. Piotr has a lot of brass stuff in his shop, mainly brass gun tubes for ships, aircraft etc. but also tappered masts and yardarms for ship models:
Set of universal tapered masts No2 (Master SM-350-090, 1:350)
Thank you Hanno and Agnius for your kind comments 🙂

You're welcome Bruce 🙂
Just a small update, because it is much to warm outside for modellmaking. Unfortunately nearly all manufacturers missed to mark the level of the waterline on the hull. I do not need a big raised contour, just a small ditch and everything is fine😉
Anyway, to get the correct level along the curved outline of the hull I used a gauge for the first time. It was a bit tricky to hold the hull and the gauge, but at the end it went out quite well. I also used the gauge to mark the hull contour on the base.

Making a water base with styrodur - part 1 (photo #20 - 31)
1. contouring the ships wake with a marker
2. Shaping the surface using a rotary wire brush
3. Shaping the ships wake using a rotary wire brush
4. Smoothing the surface using sandpaper
5. Check the contour along the waterline, avoid big gaps between the base and hull
6. Check how the ships fits along the waterline
7. Add a first layer of wall paint in a stippling motion (thin layers to avoid cracking)

Nah, Robert and Doubtingmango it is just a bit of cutting and gluing styrene. No super power is needed. But thank you very much for your kind comments 🙂

Well, the painting, weathering and effects are done. Also all parts and sub assemblies are fixed and in place. Finnaly I have to do the rigging and I need to find a good solution for the handrails along the bulwark, I have and idea but need to check how it will work. Also a crew is missing. So stay tuned, it will be finished soon and first presented at Scale Model Challange in Veldhoven NL on 14th and 15th October.

Great work Christian, what colours did you use for the wooden deck? It looks great with the right amount of grey tones, I am always struggling getting it right (often too brownish). Regards, Joost

Hi Joos, thank you for your kind comment 🙂
I prefere painting the decks in gray colours and add a final touch with a mix of gray and burnt umber more or less to fill the gaps, but also to merge the basic painting with different tones. Here in this case I used Vallejo Acrylics Model Color 70.987 Medium Grey for the basic tone, 70.884 Stone Grey for brighter areas and 70.886 Green Grey for darker areas. As meintiond all was filled and covered with a slightly oil was of mixture of gray and burnt umber. By the way, the deck was hand painted in several thinn layers.

Well, except the rigging it is done. Figures are painted and in place and some pulleyes are attached in preperation for the rigging. I also added rigging eyes on each stanchion for the handrail. I hope to finish it at the coming weekend.

Another one for the gappery, the KFK is finished now. It was a lot of fun building and extra detailing the kit. Live to be seen next week 14./15.10.2023 at Scale Model Challenge in Veldhoven NL.

Sehr schöner Kutter. Für meinen habe ich eine 3,7cm Flak bei Shapeways geholt und tausche die gegen die vordere 2cm.
Darf man fragen, woher die Figuren kommen?

What a delight for the eye, Christian. Goodness knows how you painted the stripes on the crews' collars, but it really adds even more to the 'life' you have breathed into the whole scene. If this isn't a medal winner, I don't know what is!

I agree with Simon - the details throughout are fantastic, but the water effect is the hardest one to nail down!
