Greg, just more great work

Thanks John! You're the one who got me to start scratchbuilding parts and now I crave that aspect more than any other. This project will be a F-100D shooting down a MiG-21 and my first real attempt at making some "realistic" explosions using LEDs (in preparation for a more ambitious project later). The Otaki Super Sabre seemed to be the and needs a LOT of love given that there's raised panel lines and less than 10 parts total with wheels up. So I figured the least I could do was add the airbrake.

Since this will feature an LED or two in the exploding MIG-21, I figured I'd try adding up one for the Saber's afterburner. I used red, but I think orange might've been a better choice. Oh, well, she's buttoned up now!

Your idea sounds very cool. I tried to use LED's once in a UFO project I did several years ago to a so so effect. I would like to do more but I am not so electrical minded.

i am on your six 🙂

Man, this kit is a bit of a challenge. Poor fit doesn't even begin to describe it. Otaki didn't even bother to include a hole for tail on the right side of the fuselage. Geez.

Come on Greg, only 10 parts AND expecting an easy build? 😉
9 September 2018, 21:11
Greg Baker
Good point... but I don't think it's too much to ask for the same amount of holes as parts... 😛

Now that my Area 88 1/144 build of the B-1 and the F-4 is nearing completion, I decided to revisit, and repurpose this build. It's still the same F-100D from the manga (flown by Mickey) but I decided to depict the scene where he uses rocket boosters to take off from an obstructed/damaged runway. The problem is now I need half open wheel wells, so I went back, tore off the wings and boxed in and detailed the rear wheel wells. Luckily it wasn't too far gone yet.

bit confused... you are doing a very nice thing lifting this one to a higher level, but why cutting out the wheelbays and making an interior if you want this one conquering a Mig-21? Or will this one be on the ground and the Mig in a separate dio?
9 April 2019, 15:07
Martin Oostrom
Greg is a bit subjective to changing his mind 😄
He once got a B-1, cut it to pieces to build a passenger plane from the bits, restore it to a B-1 and then ditch it for another B-1.

Greg Baker
Bart - basically, I just changed my mind. 😉 The MiG will find someone else to shoot it down. The F-100D will be shown just after a rocket powered lift off, so the wheels will be half closed. The project name/details will get edited soon to reflect the new idea.

Also Martin is right... except he missed the part where I chop up the B-1 again and start turning it back into a private passenger jet again. Stay tuned. 😉

Scratched up cockpit complete... Mickey Simon reporting for duty!

Donald Dickson II
That poor B-1. What did it ever do to you??? 😉
19 April 2019, 15:46
Greg Baker
Don... I think the Lindberg B-1 should be happy. It was replaced by a younger, sexier rival, but it's lack of detail allows it the flexibility to find a new purpose in life. 🙂

Anyway, thanks Lode. Given that the old Otaki kit didn't even have a hole for a cockpit, I'm pretty happy with the result. The canopy is so thick, you won't see much... but in my mind I'll be able to see the little white PlayBoy Bunny on Mickey's flight helmet. 😉

I haven't forgotten about this one... spent a little time drilling out some gun barrels and (finally) adding the pilot tube... now it actually looks like a F-100D Super Sabre.

Scratchbuilt a bunch of the hatches and what not... and of course I managed to drop some glue on the paint job... sigh/

Desert camo?

Yep. The next coat will be brown. I'm trying to follow the paint fallouts from this kit - F-100D Super Sabre "Mickey Simon" (Hasegawa 64772, 1:72)

Very nice camo, Greg!

Thanks guys. I'm not sure I'd say it's exactly as depicted in the manga, but there are times I'm glad it's B&W... that leaves it open to interpretation. 😉

It is always open Greg 😉

Ok... so lesson learned on this one. I left the engine out since I figured I could just slide it in near the end of the build and not have to worry about the wires hanging out the whole time. Well, the thousand dry fits I did were useless after a micron of paint got in there and it wouldn't go. I knew it was just being stubborn, so I applied just a BIT more pressure... and POP! it went right into the middle of the fuselage and started rattling around (and I managed to partially snap off part of the tail). So my genius idea turned into me trying to fish it back out with a pair of tweezers...

Sigh... best I could do was stuff a bunch of CA gel down the back pipe and drag the LED onto it. I'm glad I put the LED into a bit of a sleeve of polystyrene pipe otherwise I would've had nothing at all to grab onto.

Sigh... with all my tweezer work, I ended up popping the seam slightly at the back end as well. Geez...

Sounds like hard work!

Looks good, but at take-off, I'd close the airbrake.. seems like asking for an early crash due to stall...
13 May 2019, 07:08
Greg Baker
Thanks guys. I think I actually mentioned something about the brake above. I changed my plans for this one mid-stream, so it seemed a shame (and tons more work) to close up an airbrake I spent so much work creating. So, since this nearly vertical take off with rocket boosters already defies logic (and physics) I decided to keep the brake open to "create more lift" or maybe just bounce the jet up and over the debris on the runway. 🙂. It's comic book action!

Brilliant

Martin Oostrom
You change plans mid-stream? Who would have thought? 😄
She looks brilliant Greg. Wassup nex?
14 May 2019, 13:40
Greg Baker
Yeah, I know the rather random flailing about looks like I don't have a plan... but I usually do... subject to change. This one is almost done, I just have to fix up the rocket boosters and add a bit of weathering and a few decals. The Kfirs in my Upside down bomb project are nearly done, just the same weathering and decals to add, but the DC-10 in that project still has a ways to go. I'm just waiting on some new LEDs so I can fix my screw up and move on. And my F-5A conversion is at the same state of weathering/decals, so if the Sky Crane kit shows up tomorrow as I expect, I'll probably start that.

Greg Baker
Of course, I still have a CH-53 in painting mode, and a F-20/F-18 combo just starting... but I was thinking about maybe blowing up a Crusader in the near future. 😉

Donald Dickson II
This man needs an intervention. 😉

Geez... start talking about blowing up one little jet fighter and people start getting worried... 😉
15 May 2019, 01:29
Greg Baker
I have to say, I'm not quite sure I've got this panel wash business down yet, but I'm pretty happy with this one. For an ancient Otaki kit with limited raised lines, I think this turned out okay... and we're not quite finished yet. Still time to screw it up royally!

Nice final result. Love that camo.

Looks great, Greg! But.... The speed brake on the bottom should be retracted...

19 May 2019, 20:35
Greg Baker
I know, Gordon... I know... <sigh> I really should've closed up the air brake. Originally I was going to depict a scene where Mickey slams on the brakes to let a MiG-21 run past him while he shot it down. So that was the first addition I made and I didn't want to abandon it when I changed my mind. Just lazy!

Anyway, thanks guys! I appreciate the comments.

Thanks Don. I needed that... sniff!

Looks great as it is, the brake just underlines the "in motion" appearance of the half-up landing gear & the whole scene! 👍

Thanks Slavo! I update my blog with this build. So if anyone wants to read the few manga pages this build is based on (along with my ramblings - optional!) feel free to check it out - strobez.ca/wp/index...eed-a-boost-area-88/
