Hello Mates, so the "beast" is almost finished...just some sidewinders are missing. On the second turn everything went well, and I am quite happy with the result. Nevertheless some space for improvement, the airdoc-decals show some small silvering effect, but nothing to worry about.
So I hope that you like it as I do, Cheers, Christian

That is a very nice model. Could you share with us what paints you used to do the underside color. I really like what you've done here, and would like to use that same color on a 1/72 build.

Dear Mates, thank you very much for your Kind Feedback, which makes me very happy!
@Rex, as usual I used Revell Aqua Color, for the underside it was a mix of Aluminium 99 and Light-Grey 76 - 3:1 - if you have any further questions, please just contact me!
28 April 2015, 07:17
Rex
Thanks, I will give a 3:1 ratio a try with my Polly Scale paints. I didn't want to just start mixing OOP paints in a bottle until I had a starting point to go on. I just knew I didn't want to just paint on a raw Silver color. Your help will get me started on a mix.

Thank you both Mike and Kerry, it was not easy to get this big bird ready, but at the end it was worth every working-minute...😉
3 May 2015, 09:49
Kerry COX
No doubt. !! And I still think that the Phantom was the most "Grunty" looking war bird ever. Oh! Oh! Oh!

Eine großartige Phantom hast Du da erschaffen. Vor allem die dezente Verwitterung gefällt mir extrem gut.

Thank you both for your kind feedback! Cheers, Christian

Urban Gardini
You've done a great job on your Spook! Norm 72 + hundreds of stencils just do the trick. I personally hate decaling but it's rewarding as well and this bird wouldn't look the same without the stencils.
4 May 2015, 17:49
Christian Ristits
Thank you Urban, yes there have been a lot of stencils to apply, altough I have to say that AirDoc puts together some stencils in small groups, which makes it to decrease the number, but more difficult to avoid silvering on the other side.
4 May 2015, 18:51
Urban Gardini
There's always the risk of silvering and I saw that you've had bad luck with the starbord fin slime light.
4 May 2015, 18:56
Ulf Petersen
Outstanding, Christian! What a beauty!👍
5 May 2015, 04:17
Christian Ristits
Thank you Ulf, happy you like it as well!
Urban, yes, I had bad luck with some decals, although I "drowned" the plane in clear coat 😉
5 May 2015, 10:37
Urban Gardini
Well, some builds are just like that, they fight you 'til the very end and if a build goes well the chances just are bigger that something hits the fan at the very end...
5 May 2015, 10:42
Kerry COX
Can I pass on a tip here in relation to avoiding "Silvering" ?.

I have recently discovered that if you use a clear liquid paper glue that kids use in school, mixing a drop of it with some decal solvent, putting that mix on the model where you are about to place a decal, spread it over the area the decal will cover and it will soak into the matt surface and become totally transparent when the decal goes on top and it wont let any air get trapped under the decal, which is what causes and is called "Silvering".

Once the decal is in place, use a damp cloth and put some finger pressure on the decal to squeeze out the excess glue and solvent, then, use the setting solution on top of all that and put it aside to dry.

🙂
5 May 2015, 12:39
Kerry COX
Is that applied before any decals Mike ?
5 May 2015, 12:58
Christian Ristits
Thank you Kerry and Micheal for your Feedback, of course every tip is welcome!
Kerry, is your tip similar to what is called "Weichmacher" in German - I always use Revell Decal-Soft anyway. Usually I have no Problems with silvering, but this big plane brings my skills to the Limit 😉
5 May 2015, 14:45
Kerry COX
Thnx Mike
5 May 2015, 23:27
Clifford Keesler
I put 4 coats of future on my big Phantom before starting decals and also used decal set and mine are still silvering also. Could it be the AIR DOC decal sheet? That is the decals I think Christian used also. @ Christian I have both fuselage sides decaled, I will upload some pictures soon.
6 May 2015, 01:06
Kerry COX
Mmmmm. There must be some other issue with the surface you are attempting to decal, and I am not in a position to sus this one out unfortunately. !!
6 May 2015, 01:26
Clifford Keesler
I will try your suggestion you gave Christian, as I still have the top and bottom and weapons and pylons to do on my Phantom. Thanks for the tip.
6 May 2015, 01:36
Kerry COX
Do you have some clear paper glue handy ?
6 May 2015, 01:40
Clifford Keesler
Yes I do.
6 May 2015, 01:53
Kerry COX
OK, 🙂. Happy decaling mate.
6 May 2015, 02:14
Christian Ristits
I am really sorry to hear this Clifford! Yes, I also used the AirDoc Decals...as I posted I used a really thick layer of clear coat (see my WIP Pics), and Revell Decal Soft - but it wont worked for a few decals.
Anyway, have fun with your build and happy modelling!
6 May 2015, 04:57
Urban Gardini
Kerry, so I can use Casco RX glue together with Microscale SOL/Gunze Mr.Mark Softer NEO/Tamiya Mark Fit Strong for this trick. But isn't Gunze Mr.Mark Setter NEO the same principle from the beginning considering that you've to shake that one before use as it separates to two layers when not in use and becomes milky white when shaked?
6 May 2015, 08:12
Clifford Keesler
I tried Kerry's suggestion today and it did help some. Guess I didn't have as much clear on it as I thought. I will have to live with it. But will know better next time, I have 2 more of those Monsters. Plus this was the first one I totally airbrushed using Acrylic paints. They don't seem to go on as smooth as enamels, lesson learned.
7 May 2015, 23:50
Kerry COX
Clifford, I see you have mentioned the Acrylics not going on as well as the enamels, so I will send you a PM to se if I can help you there.🙂
