I've started it at last Roland!
Very small scale for me, I might enjoy it

R.I.P Lemmy ! I remember watching Motorhead on "The Young Ones" as a kid ! Loved Motorhead !
18 January 2020, 20:23
Munkyslut
I saw them a dozen times Bob, best live band I ever seen to this day 😉
I knew some music industry mates & got introduced a couple of times, can't begin to tell you what nice guys they were
18 January 2020, 20:27
Munkyslut
In fact I'm off to see their "ex girlfriends" Girlschool in the next week
18 January 2020, 20:29
JD
That is cool! I hung out and had drinks with Lemmy a few times at the Rainbow, when I use to live in Hollywood. Hell of a nice guy, down to earth...I'm watching!

You Lucky Bastards ! LOL !

I still can't get over how little the 1/72 components are, I've been utterly spoilt by large scale luxury!
Actually I'm looking forward to getting some reasonable levels of detail in that goldfish bowl of a cockpit.
20 January 2020, 10:17
Nigel Chapman
Motorhead and Saxon are the only bands I've seen and taken earplugs. They both play sooo loud Absolutely brilliant !!
What would be cool is to recreate Filthy Phil, Fast Eddie and Lemmy figures in 1:72 scale to go with the plane.
20 January 2020, 22:43
Nathan Dempsey
Nice subject. Oooh a large scale one would be awesome🙂
21 January 2020, 00:19
Munkyslut
Nigel, they are my 2 favourite Brit rockers, saw Saxon again at Cambridge last year.
I agree Nathan, I'm not cut out to deal with 1/72 details as can be seen by my ham fisted efforts so far😉
21 January 2020, 11:06
Munkyslut
Plenty of progress today, bulk of the main cabin work done, wing halves fitted & landing gear wheel wells done.
It was all going together really smoothly till I went to fit the wing lower halves & ailerons
That highlighted fit issues at the rear edges of the two wing halves, so wooden pegs deployed & some judicious clamping applied.
General fit is very good though, my faith in Airfix restored after the horror story mouldings of my 1/24 Spit 🙂
21 January 2020, 14:28
Munkyslut
And I got my Bomber CD out & blew the dust out of my speakers (& my boxer dogs ears)
21 January 2020, 16:39
David Taylor
will you be fitting the extra turrets
21 January 2020, 17:29
Munkyslut
To be honest David I didn't know there were extra turrets! I'd better check the Motörhead cover artwork
21 January 2020, 18:40
Nigel Chapman
Just thinking how good it would look suspended over a stage of Marshall stacks - a great diorama. Got my ticket for rescheduled Saxon gig in London in March.
21 January 2020, 18:52
Nigel
The thing that's really cool about this model is the black colour scheme and the special decals. If only my aged eyes and fingers could deal with the smaller scales! 🙁
21 January 2020, 19:50
Munkyslut
Hey that's a great idea....... I could scratch build Murder1 I reckon 😉
21 January 2020, 21:15
Munkyslut
David! I see what you mean now...... theres an extra turret under the nose on the album artwork, with Philthy Animal looking out of it.
No options in the kit to do it, maybe aftermarket parts?
22 January 2020, 09:57
David Taylor
Just a thunk.

Bozzer
Just realised I've not joined this thread, d'oh! I'm in \m/
27 January 2020, 06:34
Christoph Kunz
Hello Munkyslut, the turret under the nose could be from a B17. Anf the turret at the rear looks like the one on the Heinkel He177. Maybe department X of Revell could help you. revell.de/produkte/m..&gid=1&pid=2
27 January 2020, 16:24
Munkyslut
Ahh that's excellent info Christoph 👍
I really would like to get it as close to the box art as possible, even down the bands faces & the bombs blazing away.
Airfix had a great idea with the Motörhead theme, but didn't put as much effort in to the box contents....... the separate decal sheet is cool & the paint chart a welcome addition, but the 3 airman included are all seated when one should be laying prone for the nose gun.
I can understand the lack of turrets as that would require retooling the glasshouse, not to mention the turret itself.
It's still pretty cool though😎
27 January 2020, 18:33

Shot a coat of light grey primer to check the sanding of the gap filling at the wing & fuselage joins & im pretty happy, a nice coat of Matte Black being laid down very soon!

Just shot some Tamiya XF-1 Matt Black thru my airbrush, I thought it would look too plain & boring but it looks really good.
Can't wait to get the band logo decals on there & add some red highlights😎
31 January 2020, 19:43
Tim Heimer
Fyi munky, Warning! decals don't like flat paint! They normally don't lay good and have bubbles. If you can, hit the decal areas with a gloss and a fine brush 1st, then flat coat.
1 February 2020, 01:28
Munkyslut
Good advice Tim, thanks mate 👍
1 February 2020, 09:21
Munkyslut
Tim...... will semi gloss clear coat do the job or does it have to be gloss?
To be honest I didn't clear coat the big Spit & some of the small decals just curled up to nothing when I laid down the semi gloss sealing coats
1 February 2020, 20:14
Bob Hall
I've used clear Elmer's School glue for mine, just a pinhead tip on the area under the decal and rub flat, works great for me.
1 February 2020, 20:28
Munkyslut
Nice Bob! Thanks 👍
1 February 2020, 21:14
Munkyslut
I'm almost ready for decals but the huge Motörhead script that goes across the underside of the wings & fuselage is gonna have a huge struggle getting over the engine pods.
I can use some decal soft but surely I can only stretch em so far....... I don't want to cut the script in half but not sure what else to do.
Idea's????
10 February 2020, 20:35
Tim Heimer
I can't think of anything you haven't. Either cut it in 2 or 3 strategic places and soften it up, too soft and you'll lose the whole thing which is why I said I'd cut it in 2 or 3. A big soft decal would be asking for a tear in the wrong place, so I'd think I'd rather have my choice as to where!
11 February 2020, 01:52
Munkyslut
Thanks Tim, I think I'll make some cleverly placed cuts & hold my breath 😉
11 February 2020, 09:37
Munkyslut
Fuselage glazing installed, 2 big bombs attached, tried to fit 3 but no space, painted the exhaust headers red cos I felt like it & almost ready for the big decals.
I've glued the large cockpit birdcage in place but left the top half of the canopy loose so I can lift it to show my weak efforts at detail 😉
11 February 2020, 11:00
Bozzer
Gonna agree with you both. A couple of clever surgical cuts should make life easier. Micro Sol and Set are a must. I've never used Decal soft, but if you have and it works, go for it.
11 February 2020, 14:43
Munkyslut
Thanks Boz 👍
I used the Revell stuff on the big Soit & it worked well.
The Motörhead logo will have to be cut in half & go either side of the fuselage & bomb carrier, while also getting some little vents & nicks to bend over the engine cowlings.
11 February 2020, 16:52
Tim Heimer
I have to agree with Boz, the micro sol and set work great. 2 cents worth.
11 February 2020, 18:13
Munkyslut
It's on....... spent loads of time trying different positions & spacing & this was my choice in the end.
Added the bullet holes to balance the width, the weirdest thing is that the letters on the right side appear bigger by a fraction but they're not!
Overall I'm happy & they sank in to the mould lines ok, looks good in the flesh 😉

I am an old school metal head but I never got into Motorhead so forgive me when I ask; why is Motorhead on a German aircraft? And actually, I do owe Motorhead thanks for turning me on to the Young Ones as I was channel surfing back in '86. I stopped to watch them then stayed with the show and Neil and Prick arguing on the train about, "Shut up AND tell you the answer" just had me rolling. But why the Heinkel?
12 February 2020, 00:35
Tim Heimer
Looks good Munky!

Found my own answer. Apparently Mr. Lemmy told the artist , "The bad guys had the best shit"......they just never bothered to upgrade it ( see: WWII European Theatre).
12 February 2020, 08:25
Munkyslut
Cheers Tim it's coming along now 👍
Lemmy had a thing for German war memorabilia.
Not that he'd got anything against the Allied Forces, simply that the Germans had much better quality stuff, especially the uniforms, so he started collecting.
I suppose a German bomber probably held more interest for him than an Allied one.

Would have been quite interesting had Motorhead and Iron Maiden done a bill together. And I wonder if Airfix will release a Night Ranger B 25 kit?

Am I right in thinking the lighting rig for the bomber tour was shaped like a Heinkel and moved ?

Main decals all on now, modified positions a little to suit my own ideas, preferred the bullet holes on the canopy cos the tail looked far too busy with the other decals already there.
Also worth a mention is that the large 'M' on one of the fuselage registration decals was only part there. Wether it was not printed right or not I don't know, wasn't on the decal sheet that's for sure...... I cut up a spare decal to make the missing half, done a neat job I reckon 😉
Big Motörhead decals on top of wings are awesome 😎
12 February 2020, 14:13
Munkyslut
Bossy....... yeah that'd be interesting!
The Maiden Spit looks very impressive in the flesh, I saw it at a gig in Birmingham last year.
12 February 2020, 14:22
Munkyslut
Ok so it looks almost there.......... but it's far from 'done' 😉
All thanks to Nigel & his suggestion of "wouldn't it be great in front of a stack of Marshall's?"
So that's what I'm gonna do, complete with 1/72 Lemmy, Phil & Filthy 😎
12 February 2020, 19:25

You did us all proud on those decals Monkey mate! Top job.

I agree. Looks like those decals came out well.

Fantastic kit. Lemmy would have had a whole squadron hanging from his bedroom ceiling. Mine's still on order from Airfix. My Mother was shot at by a Heinkel He111 when she was a little girl. She hid under her sledge & saw the bullets kicking up the snow around her. They breed them tough on Tyneside!

Thanks for the kind words lads, my efforts are slowly getting better al the time 😉

Thanks I'll try em 👍 I've got loads of pairs lying about & what I don't destroy the Boxer dogs do!
I'm offf to York for a couple days break tomorrow & there's a couple of great music shops there.
25 February 2020, 19:54
Bozzer
York? Jammy sod! I love York mate. There's a couple of model shops there, one is tucked away under one of the gates, the other, I'm not sure. Everytime I go, I always end up in Yates's and the Kings. Needless to say, it soon becomes the next day! The Park Inn is ok to stay. Avoid the Queens! Both on the opposite side of the river, but the brekkie in the Queens is about 16 quid per head!

26 February 2020, 02:49

Hey Munky, looking at the photo, the snare drum would make a great base for your plane to sit along with the amps
26 February 2020, 09:37

I know York intimately Bozzer, been coming here for 25 years & have frequented most every pub, bar, & restaurant. It's a great place, those two shops you mentioned are excellent, Monk Bar is the one by the city wall & the little one down by the river is P&S Models.
You been to the old medieval bar by the Shambles market?
Even my dogs are allowed 😉
26 February 2020, 10:55

26 February 2020, 11:01

Monkey, you nailed them model shops! I can't say I remember that bar, but I've been in most. I vaguely remember going in a bar, near the bridge, downstairs, with old pics of movie stars, on the walls? The Dungeon tour was pretty cool, I also loved the commentary on the tour bus. The cats are everywhere, and let's not forget daylight robbery? I never got to see Big Dick's grave though, sadly
26 February 2020, 19:15
Munkyslut
Ahh mate those open top buses are hilarious! The guides have the funniest time taking the piss out of the tourists 😄. I reckon Dick haunted every pub in town & his ghost works for the tourist board!
His grave is on a corner of a grave yard right by my mates house, ain't that special...

I did once visit the NRM, where to my amazement, saw a pile of bits, wheels and all manner of connecting rods. Amongst them, were two plaques that read "Flying Scotsman". Fast forward a decade maybe, and on a cold wet, winter morning in February, I think? I was stood at the gates of Riley's yard in Bury, Lancashire, around 9am, when this huge black steam train, like a smoke breathing monster, thundered past me, around 3, maybe 4 ft away. It beared the number 103, pushed by a diesel. Low and behold, I saw the brand new, fully refurbed, Flying Scotsman, get pushed out to the station, to start it's inaugural run for it's first ever trial, to pull passenger trains again. My new American Mrs with me, who never truly understood the importance of the event she was witnessing, was soaked to the skin. During trials, it was in war time black livery, now she's in her famous Green livery, that everyone remembers. The cold I suffered afterwards, was well worth the experience. I'll never forget that day and how the ground shook as she passed my feet. Came a long way, from the pile of bolts, when I first saw her.
27 February 2020, 00:10
Munkyslut
Did you see the Mallard & the world collection of A4's??? Blew me away mate!
The Scotsman was in that machine shed with the overhead viewing walkway, just an epic pile of parts!
That's a great place to visit ain't it 👍

Yeah mate, that's where I saw her in bits too. Later, I took the Mrs to the NRM. We saw Mallard, Tornado, Evening Star and all the rest, both in the Great Hall, and outside. When I was in PA, we went over to Strasburg. Dude, our American cousins blow us away! The train museum there is epic! Now them beasts really make you feel small! Definitely worth a trip if you get up Lancaster way, in Pennsylvania. So is the Mack museum in Allentown. Dude, I nearly creamed my pants in there! There's tons to see and it's free, plus you get a guided tour. There's also the America on wheels museum. When we got there, it was about to close, so I'm planning a trip back. You can see pictures of all these places on TripAdvisor. Definitely worth a look mate 👍

Since this topic has wandered off into locomotives, I just was curious if you have seen a Union Pacific 6900 series. My Grandfather was a design and testing engineer and spent many hours in the first one made. It is my understanding that it is the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive ever made. My Grandpa said it wasn't really a success due the limitations of tractive effort (wheel to rail grip).
