On the very top of the motor can be seen the throttle activator wheels attached to cables. This is what the bike parts will be replicating.

Too many problems to leave this paint job as it is, with feathered edges and all kinds of air borne crap wanting to land on all I painted, so it was stripped back to bare plastic and I will start all over again.

This paint scheme has really been one of the most challenging I have ever done. Especially avoiding that dreaded thing modellers call "Orange peel effect." Caused by not thinning the paint to a 'runny cream' consistency and NOT working close to the surface of the model at 12/15 PSI on the air brush. and by not putting enough paint down , letting the thin coats dry before you have finished using ALL the paint you should, getting the painted surface to look 'wet', as that allows the paint to 'lay down' and find and set it's surface tension due to the 'weight' of so much paint being applied.

I have tried ALL kinds of paints in the attempt to get a glossy finish the first time the paint is applied, but Tamiya enamels are, in my humble opinion, the ultimate in giving that show room finish every time, once you have become familiar with it's characteristics and how quickly it dries after it has been applied. Acrylics and lacquer paints I find, have a tendency to start drying mid air from the moment it leaves the nozzle of the AB and this will not let the paint 'lay down' like enamels.

Because the Tamiya enamels cure so quickly once on the surface of the model, it is advisable to start removing all masking material as soon as possible, to help prevent the 'feathering' that is cause by dry paint not wanting to 'give' as the masking tape is removed.

The 'consistency' of the paint plays a massive role in just how good your coverage is going to be and just how many passes will be needed to get a total effect. Too thin and the paint will want to look for somewhere to 'pool', and too thick, the paint can't 'lay down' and even out equally over all surface angles, but 'runny cream' is perfect for getting it all to behave as you want it to.

After I have applied all the decals necessary to make this model look as it should, I will 'clear cote' with Tamiya clear gloss enamel, mostly to 'seal' what I have done and it will also let me handle the model without any fear of paint being spoiled by my body oils from my fingers.

I have finally got it right. Clean and even lines with no ragged edges to detract from the over all appearance.

I used the Tamiya sheet masking material to achieve the even and correct position of all the paint lines, rather than try and use the regular tape and eye sight like before.

The only place that the lines can be said to be uneven in height is here on the roof, but with some gentle sanding, this will be eliminated and look as it should.

The engine bay plumbing is as close to the original as I can make it. Including the throttle 'wheels'.

A fair bit of touch up paint will be applied where the carbon fibre sheets had to be cut and scraped away to allow for parts to be glued.

And I thought the Sauber/Mercedes C9 was a difficult one for decals. !! This is really tedious, but OK.

The start of all the decal application is with the whit dot stripes. As all other sign writing/sticker went over the top of these dots. !

It was a fun challenge, the orange is ts-31 and I couldn't find any brush on version to do little pieces so plan well ahead is my best advice. And there's plenty of reference material out there. I used this kit as a trial on revells decalsoft which works a treat.

I am working out the best paint to use, having tried with the Humbrol fluoro orange, only to screw things up by not taking my time between layers, and all the dust particles in the air while we have strong westerly winds blowing. 🙁
The masking took hours. !

Hey guys, saw this thing in the flesh yesterday! Got a guided tour through the "Cox Collection" at Modelling Heaven. Respect for Yoda's skills has elevated even further if that was possible. Models everywhere! Open the broom cupboard and there is a small collection of works in progress. Open the garage door and there is a BMW bike taking pride of position, surrounded by model boxes, dusty old dioramas and air brushing equipment. The lounge room has four display cabinets full of works of art. Dining room has a small collection of kits I have never seen before. Another visitor? Yep, none other that Dave Dalton, Oz ship building champ! And, of course, taking centre stage, a real life Yoda! I love this man! Well, I do have Mammy and we are talking plutonic of course but I had a wonderful day with Kezza! From living in a remote mining town with no peers, here I am with Australian Modelling Royalty! None of this possible without Scalemates! Thanks Tim, you have made dreams come true!

Yes, there was a gathering of the three modellers yesterday. !
My house is as described, with modelles everywhere and occupying all available space. 😉
It was wonderful to gather with good friends and just talk plastic, techniques and passion for what keeps us in the brotherhood. 👍
Actually, I have five display cases in my living room with a sixth being added this week end. 🙂
Not to mention the HUGE display case, (A former candy shop resident) turned into my very first display case some 25 years ago.
Peter has commissioned me to build the Trumpeter 1/35 ASLAV-PC PHASE 3 for him, wanting a 'COX' built kit for his collection, and that was a great compliment if ever there was. 👍
Pictures will follow, all steps and stumbles faithfully recorded.

I wouldn't say the 787 Blew everyone else off the Track, the other two 787s did not fare so well, but at least finished (with only 12 Cars Classified that year), behind the 3 Works Jaguars and a Sauber Mercedes, whose driver line up included an at that time unknown Michael Schumacher. Just 2 Months later, we would see him make his F1 debut with Jordan.

The sound of the Merc C11 was quite something, akin to an angry VW Beetle that's taking too many Steroids.
2 Laps separated each of the top 4 finishers.

This 787 however is looking awesome.

Like me, I am sure that this hobby has saved our sanity in some way, with most of us all being couped up like a fearful ferret, scared of the grim reaper. 🙁
As concentrating on this build as much as I had was certainly of benefit when it came to my recovery for sure, but worth every second. 👍 🙂

Album info

This car blew every one off the track and was never seen on the track again.
The livery is spectacular and why I have decided to tackle it as one of the last cars I will ever build.
It will be helped along with the Hobby Design PE kit, and I hope, a steady hand and keen eye.
