I am searching for my mojo. I suspect the carpet monster of stealing it.
So here I am after two weeks. Assembled a snap tite kit. I even sanded some parts and already applied some primer.
I usually mean to go full tilt with weathering, and hardly ever apply any. Will this time be any different? I bought some AK mud, so who knows how this will end....

Spanjaard
following with real interest 🙂 i see that your mojo is coming
if you need inspiration about the weathering... there is a fantastic tractor from Fetzi85... just something to aim for 😉
2 October 2019, 20:11
Martin Oostrom
I'm afraid Moritz' Case is beyond my skills. But I'll aim high!
2 October 2019, 20:50
Spanjaard
that is the spirit!!

Very cool, how fast could it go?

Farrrm out! Nice challenge for you. Something different.

Alec K
Looking great Martin 👍
5 October 2019, 22:25
Martin Oostrom
John, I can't find the exact speed. But at 14hp, it can't have been a spectacular top speed...
Tim, it sure is a challenge. Especially in guts, do I dare?
Welcome Lode, I think I messed with the paint job😎
Alec, thank you

Nathan Dempsey
I think it looks great Martin. A hard working machine.
6 October 2019, 22:46
Greg Baker
Hey guys, shove over! I wanna see too!
6 October 2019, 23:16
Spanjaard
what a fantastic job. and you said it was your first chipping attempt? wow!
7 October 2019, 00:22
Martin Oostrom
This was my first chipping attempt. Don't be fooled by the (great?) look. Using Ammo heavy chipping is more an exercise is perseverance than skill. It is easy as pie!
7 October 2019, 08:01
Alec K
Whoa! Nice chipped mate 👍
8 October 2019, 01:26
Martin Oostrom
Thanks you gents.
I need to paint some parts like weathered chrome. Any suggestions or an how-to?
8 October 2019, 06:02
Spanjaard
maybe paint chrome and use some rust color applied with sponge?
8 October 2019, 14:10

maybe paint chrome and use some rust color applied with sponge?
follow by a wash, probably. I would use Flory models washes for example, since there is no strong thinners involved on them. it is just clay

My friend Google found this Youtube Video

You know Martin, this build has really inspired me. I'm working on a couple of F-8E's at the moment, but there's a "started but never finished" one staring at me from the shelf. After seeing your amazing "chip the hell out of the paint" job I think I'm going to build it as a crashed wreck that spent 40 years in the desert...
8 October 2019, 15:05
Martin Oostrom
Greg, that is one of the best compliments ever. I inspired someone. 😄
In other news, I also washed the left side.
8 October 2019, 19:55
Moritz Fentzahn
Count me in Martin. Your chipping looks very good. The effect on the rear wheels is perfect in my eyes. 👍. Looking forward to the finished build
9 October 2019, 07:36
Slavo Hazucha
Beautiful work & techniques 👍
9 October 2019, 08:15
Tim Heimer
Now if it was Slavo, he'd have a dio with it in a pot field. LOL
9 October 2019, 13:06
Slavo Hazucha
Don´t compromise my supply lines!😉
9 October 2019, 14:23
Martin Oostrom
Moritz, your Case build made me pull this half finished kit out of the box. Thank you.
Slavo and Tim, keep going!
I DO need to think about the smallish dio.
9 October 2019, 16:26
Martin Oostrom
I tried the painting method from the video. I think I am SO happy!! 😄
What do you guys think?
10 October 2019, 19:38
Spanjaard
respect my friend, you certainy got it 🙂
10 October 2019, 23:31
Alec K
That's an affirmative, ghostrider 👍
11 October 2019, 06:24
Moritz Fentzahn
Looking good Martin 👍, now you inspired me to build this kit and move it from trading back to stash. Thanks mate😉
11 October 2019, 07:42
Danny Meer
Looks amazing Martin, I realy want to learn this weathering style. Maybe I can use the molten cabine of the budweiser truck to practice on. do you have a book about weathering technique or from internet? The tractor has just the right amount of rust.
11 October 2019, 07:57
Martin Oostrom
Thanks you very much my mateys! This is a mojo restorer extraordinaire with all these positive comments.
Dony, I used ammo heavy chipping for the weathered paint. This magazine scalemates.com/press/issue.php?id=229 gave me some ideas and YouTube was very helpful in looking at techniques.
11 October 2019, 10:04
Danny Meer
ty for your answer, what do you prefer brush or airbrush? or is that more depending on how big the surface is? sorry for asking so much questions 🙂
11 October 2019, 10:36
Martin Oostrom
You can never ask too many questions. Assuming things and (negatively) react from there, that's something else…

For this job I prefer the airbrush. Unless your name is Augie, I think it is impossible to get a thin enough layer of top paint to get the chipping effect to work, regardless of size.
Cockpits, dashboards, etc: primer and basecolour with an airbrush, highlights/downlights/details with a fine brush.
Don't forget, what works for me can be a disaster for you and vice versa. When in doubt, get a spare piece of plastic and try what works for you. Better ruin an old credit card than your monthlong prepared masterpiece!
11 October 2019, 11:54
Danny Meer
thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions, realy appreciate it 🙂 sometimes working with small brushes is difficult for me cuz of the rheumatism osteoarthritis (especially with this cold/wet weather) think an airbrush will be a great asset for me to buy
11 October 2019, 13:36
Martin Oostrom
You're welcome Dony. You will find that there are many helpful souls here, for those who ask.
The 19th and 20th there is a convention in Veldhoven (near Eindhoven). Airbrush Services Almere is always there. Be there if you can and ask for Erik. He'll give you the best advice around. Just bring some money 😉
11 October 2019, 16:11
Danny Meer
👍
11 October 2019, 16:38
Spanjaard
or you can go to Almere, and do it in the shop. you can have plenty of time to even test some airbrushes (probably possible also in Veldhoven), and yes, Erik will certainly give you good advise
anyway, Veldhoven is a great place to be next week. Almere Airbrush Services will also be in Houten in November (euroscalemodelling.nl/en/traders/)

Martin Oostrom
I made a mistake (what's new?). To get my rust streaks flowing in the right direction, I needed to know the exact angle on which the tractor will be on the base. I muddied the base and I needed the wheels to plow a track. That's why I dry fitted the wheels. Now the wheels won't come off again, somehow they got stuck. But I also need to spray some varnish and colours later on....
12 October 2019, 14:17
Tim Heimer
Live and learn is what this hobby is all about! LOL But keep up the good work!
12 October 2019, 14:28
Alec K
Sooo...they did come off eventually?
13 October 2019, 01:37
Martin Oostrom
Alec, not yet. On my first attempt the mud was still wet, and I damaged some paint. not telling where, get your magnifying glass 😉
If I dare I'll have a second attempt today.
Lode, you make me blush
Tim, you are so right.
13 October 2019, 09:08
Martin Oostrom
Still no second attempt at removing the wheels. I did add some chrome parts. Also added a rust wash to the seat. It is still wet in the pics, but it will dry to a light rusty layer (I hope)
14 October 2019, 16:20
Tom ...
Excellent build, Martin! Weathering looks fantastic and love the muddy base!
14 October 2019, 18:47
Martin Oostrom
Wheels removed! Finally!
Painted some light rust orange. After that I did an oil dot filter with some orange/brown rust tones. Drying time now and the next step will be a gloss/satin varnish. After that streaking with oil and grime.

Chris Greathouse
Sorry I'm late to the party, looking good!
18 October 2019, 17:52
Martin Oostrom
Thanks Chris, you are just in time for the exciting part. I intended to use this little tractor as an exercise in weathering, just hoping to learn a thing or two. But I'm really happy how she is turning out to be.
18 October 2019, 17:57
Danny Meer
Nice!! and the seat came out great, looks so real 🙂
18 October 2019, 18:01
Spanjaard
Not yet finished so it can not fo to Veldhoven, but maybe it can go to Houten?😉
18 October 2019, 18:12
Patrick Hagelstein
18 October 2019, 18:15
Spanjaard
ESM verhuisd van Nieuwegein naar Houten in 2017😉
18 October 2019, 19:14
Greg Baker
Me either... but I'm captivated by what Martin is doing here. This feels like a boss level... after he completes it, he'll get enough experience points to move up a level.

I'm very happy you guys like this little project of mine. I think she looks great as she was born as a snaptite kit.
19 October 2019, 16:51
Martin Oostrom
The oils dried a bit streaky and grainy. I had to re-blend them. After this and a satin varnish, I did some decals. These will have to be roughed a bit to match the rest.
20 October 2019, 18:30
Alec K
It's looking really good 👍
20 October 2019, 23:47

Donald Dickson II
And a snake! Loving the weathering.
21 October 2019, 11:36
Martin Oostrom
Thank you gentlemen and Peter. 😄
This build is really encouraging. Loads of new stuff tried and relatively successful.
Creating Birdshit is being tested atm. Animals might be a bit harder. Am I allowed to ad a picture from one of the mates and call him a .....? 😛
21 October 2019, 12:34
Spanjaard
Some of the "...." may be offended with some pictures 😄

Peter, I actually saw an ancient Tamiya dino kit at SMC last Saturday….
I did find some time to progress with this little relevation. Quite a lot actually. This is it: roughened up the decals, added some streaking (mildly successful), glued the last bits on, put her on her base and added some extra mud to the base.
I still need to do some stuff. I need to paint her lights, add some water to the seat and …. some stuff I forgot at this hour 😄
22 October 2019, 20:42
Danny Meer
A work of art, looks so cool for just a "simple" kit. way better then just build the normal tractor
22 October 2019, 20:54
Chris Greathouse
That's amazing!
