So do I 🙂

Aires tend to be a pain in the.... to get them to fit inside of anything.... but details are excellent.

Damn, i jinxed it. 🙁

No you didn't. Gives me a good reason to test drive my new Proxxon.

my experience with Aries is that in order to fit a cockpit inside of a plane, you have to sand like mad until you are sure is transparent... and then and only then... it is half way 😄. seriously. do not trust your eyes, because the stuff looks transparent when actually there is maybe almost millimetre left to be sanded....
but the details are great once in place. i like them more than Eduard. and there is no prepainted stuff, that do not really like...
27 November 2017, 19:48
Martin Oostrom
Never used resin parts before. They're harder than i expected. I think I'll sand the fuselage and the cockpit a bit. Should fit like a glove.
27 November 2017, 20:17

goes without saying but remember a good mask when sanding resins....

I took a leap of faith this morning. I wanted to show the canopy open, so I had to cut the one piece canopy. First time ever I did this, scratched a bit here and there.
As there were already some scratches I boldly plunged ahead and sanded of the extra frame that shouldn't be there. That was also a first, sanding clear plastic....
After some polishing the canopy looks fine by me. We knew that holding some rotary equipment at >5000RPM against some plastic would remove scratches?
6 December 2017, 12:36
Patrick Hagelstein
Good one on the canopy! I don't know if you can obtain Future Floor Polish where you are (I know some model shops sell it in small bottles) but that works like a charm clearing up a canopy. I only tried it here in the US where it is readily available and was amazed by the results.
6 December 2017, 17:25
Spanjaard
i recently a polished a canopy simply by using polishing pads, 8.000 and 12.000. i have to post the pictures.....
be really careful with rotary equipment, very easy to melt plastic.....
6 December 2017, 20:01
Martin Oostrom
Patrick, how do you use this future? Just spray it on? Have to check here in Rotterdam if its available somewhere.
O've tried the alclad polishing cloths on a similar canopy that I scratched. It didn't work as well as polishing paste and this felt polishing tip.
From now on I' Be extra super careful with the proxxon. Thanks Spanjaard 👍
6 December 2017, 20:28
Kees Kleijwegt
AK interactive has a similar product, called gauzy agent.
ak-interactive.com/p..zy-agent-glass-coat/

You can dip the canopy in the agent, just like future. I thought it also can be airbrushed.
And they also sell a intermediate agent, no experience with that product.
6 December 2017, 20:57
Spanjaard
if you plan to airbrush it, i would really suggest to try first with an old canopy. just in case. i have read you can clean it with some products (Windex, but it may not be available in NL, although others will). everybody is saying that dipping it in the product is the best possible result (let it dry under a box to avoid dust, and over some paper/cloth to take away the excess)
As far as i know, your only option for Future in NL, is to buy abroad. in any case, this is consider the Future bible swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html
6 December 2017, 21:03
Spanjaard
Ah, about canopies, you may also want to watch the tutorial from Paul Budzik
Youtube Video he is actually not using Future but rotary tools 😉 (go to 4m30s)
all his tricks can be found in his website paulbudzik.com/tools-techniques/index.html

Kees Kleijwegt
Thanks for the links Spanjaard, great stuff! 👍
6 December 2017, 22:17
Spanjaard
you are very welcome. Paul Budzik does really amazing stuff....
6 December 2017, 22:19
Greg Baker
I sometimes use toothpaste as a finishing abrasive on canopies and, with a bit of elbow grease, it seems to work well to take out small scratches. I also dip canopies in Future and am usually pleased with the results (and the times I'm not is usually my fault anyway!). The thing I like the best is the ammonia in Windex (or other glass cleaners) wipes up mistakes and spills (and do-overs) very easily. You should cover it and put it on a paper towel to dry. It's self-leveling, but sometimes surface tension makes it pool at the edges... and dust is everywhere.
7 December 2017, 00:31
Martin Oostrom
Well, that stirred up some talk 🙂
For now I'm happy with my canopy. I think I'll keep using the felt polishing pads on the proxxon. I've a good polishing compound, let's see where this approach will take me.
Spanjaard, thank you for the links, I had almost forgotten Paul.
Kees, thank you for the AK tip. Perhaps one day as an alternative for future.....
Greg, since a couple of weeks I'm the proud owner of a tennis elbow, so elbow grease is a bit out of the question for now. If the canopies turn yellowish, whitening toothpaste will do the job? 😉
7 December 2017, 07:45
Wim van der Luijt
Martin: in NL there used to be a product called parket plus from pledge with the same formula as future...it's milky white but dries to a transparent gloss. I have no idea if it is still available but I have bottle and use for glossing before decals and dipping canopies, might be worth checking out (I also use waterbased glitsa glanslak as a gloss coat mixed 1:2 with water, tip from Martien Lourens here on scalemates, but haven't tried that on canopies though)
7 December 2017, 10:41
Spanjaard
@Wim, which product exactly? i checked in glitsa.nl but i can not find one called exactly glanslak (misschien Glitsa Vloerlak?)

7 December 2017, 14:19
Spanjaard
hartelijk bedankt Wim!
7 December 2017, 14:23
Martin Oostrom
Gentlemen thank you for all the tips. Spanjaard is providing me with a sample of the illustrious Future.
Pledge or Glitsa will go in the memory bank 😉

Meanwhile life goes on; added some more PE and did some glueing.
9 December 2017, 17:58
Björn Svedberg
That is alot of nice PE detail at that scale 👍.
9 December 2017, 21:08
Martin Oostrom
Lode, it was CA. A blob on a bit of cardboard, evened out with an old knife tip, then I dipped the canopy in the CA and tried to get the PE as straight as possible....
Björn, some call it PE hell in this scale 🙂 Glad you like it.
The cockpit is finished, so I guess it's time to get some more progress on the Skyray.
11 December 2017, 20:35
Martin Oostrom
Closed the fuselage this morning. Dryfitted two or three times, no obvious problems. Added glue and all of a sudden it was like hell to get the fuselage closed properly. Tape and CA should do the trick though....
12 December 2017, 12:57
Greg Baker
You should remember to take your finger out from between the fuselage halves... that might help with the fit.
12 December 2017, 22:03
Patrick Hagelstein
😄
12 December 2017, 22:05
Martin Oostrom
Greg, you know what can happen with ca glue 😉
Weird though. On the top and on the bottom there was a raised step on the left. Almost looked like the left half had grown a 2mm. At the nose and at the tail there was a raised step on the right. Sort of a squished look. Sanding took care of most, now there's rescribing to do. I suck at scribing 🙁 Let's call it practicing.
12 December 2017, 22:47
Spanjaard
patience Martin... patience😉
13 December 2017, 00:09
Greg Baker
CA and I have a love-hate relationship at the best of times... and I rescribe like spaghetti... but practice makes for more practice!
13 December 2017, 02:25
Donald Dickson II
OK...
First. I am guessing a Proxxon is the same as a Dremel. And I use mine to do heavy sanding all the time. Much quicker than using sanding sticks or the like. Just do the detailing with those. I also use it to buff well set metalizers. Handy tool indeed. 🙂

Havent tried future. Have always just polished out the canopy with sticks then micro mesh. And thinned glosscoat if needed. though I do need to grab some Future and give it a whirl.

PE in 72nd. Headache. LOL

Re scribing. ONLY if absolutely necessary. LOL I suck at it as well. You will NEVER see me sand down a raised panel kit and re scribe. I personally think those that do so have mental issues.😉

And great job so far Martin!!!
13 December 2017, 04:05
Patrick Hagelstein
Proxxon and Dremel are quite alike. I believe that Proxxon is more targeted at the hobbyist market and Dremel is more targeted at the in house DIY market. Proxxon is somewhat finer in their tools.

And I join you on the club of being wonky on scribing. I hate to even think of it when glueing and sanding my stuff. But...practise makes the master they say...
13 December 2017, 08:06
David Thor
Cockpit is looking great!
13 December 2017, 08:19

Okay, I'm in good company scribing wise. 😄
Donald, pe in 72 is headache, some mate said 700 is looney scale. Those are my main scales🙂

13 December 2017, 16:25

Thanks guys. This is an on/off/on/off etc. build
14 May 2018, 20:33

Martin, much like my B-1. Work on it, set it aside. Do a couple few 5 others. Go back to it for a bit. Set it aside....
15 May 2018, 00:27
Martin Oostrom
Yes indeed. It seems focussing on one build is rather hard for me.
15 May 2018, 05:09
Peter Hardy
Lode Marty reminds me of one of those 19th century Mexican Bandidos. Bristling with weapons and ammo. Or in Marty's case models being built in one stage or another. I have no idea how he does it, and it cheeses me off that he does 12 builds at once and does them ALL beautifully! I should hate him, but I don't.
15 May 2018, 08:35
Martin Oostrom
Aaaaaaaand we're back here. Grabbed this girl and gave her back end a good thorough …… layer of Alclad. Started with Gloss Black Primer, then a layer of aluminium. Added some contrast with dark aluminium and burnt iron. A misting of jet exhaust was supposed to blend things together, but the contrast was still a bit too pronounced. So I added another misting of aluminium. I like the result. 😄

I build and paint as my mood (and available time) suits me. I really want to get some progress on my Graf Spee, but sometimes it goes as it goes.

Peter, you make me feel like the infamous El Guapo! For that, I hate you as much as you hate me 😉
"What does infamous mean? - That means he's more than famous!" 😎

Hilarious... that was like 30 years ago?
21 May 2018, 21:14
Peter Hardy
Yep, still makes me laugh. They really took the p!ss out of the Dutch don't you think. Hey, if you want a laugh I just told Kerry I was going to teach you to drive! After teaching Mam you would be no challenge!!
22 May 2018, 06:48
Spanjaard
Sorry, but I do not follow.... Maybe I simply do not remember but....What have the Dutch to do with that movie?
22 May 2018, 08:54
Martin Oostrom
Wasn't one of the characters called Ned Niederlander?
I've been called a lot of things in my life, but The Handsome (with capitals) isn't one of those things 😉
22 May 2018, 09:25
Peter Hardy
Ned was the girlish sensitive one. I probably picked up on it because of my "Dutch" connection. Fantastic movie. Loved the campfire scene with the fake animals.
22 May 2018, 11:27
Spanjaard
Ok
22 May 2018, 21:28

Nearly as funny as the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles.

And back to Comedy Central. In tonight's show, we have Pete and his Spanish Comrade!!! Bring it on Peter!

Sorry mate. She'll be wearing a French camo dress. I have some other nmf birds to build and I want some variation on the shelf.

You actually got me thinking. I just might let the sark side seep through one day and build all of Buck's adversaries' planes.
15 June 2018, 15:47
Spanjaard
you can do it Lode, take the challenge😉
15 June 2018, 16:35
Martin Oostrom
Shouldn't be too hard 🙂
Just a slope, some scaffolding for the dignitaries, perhaps a crane nearby and som water. How hard can it be 😎

looking good despite the gaps!
15 June 2018, 18:12
Martin Oostrom
Thanks Dave. It was a quest to find the right colours. IPMS Stockholm is down? There were my favourite conversion charts. 🙁
I settled for Ammo gunmetal grey on the underside, Ammo Russian Green, Ammo Dunkelgrün and Ammo Russian Tan for the camo.
Curious for the end result

Deep down in his heart, Peter wants to add a sharkmouth to one of his bikes, he just doesn't know it yet 😉
Thank you guys. Nobody has spotted some places that need improvement? Suggestions are aways welcome
26 June 2018, 21:02
Patrick Hagelstein
Apart from the shark mouth?... 😉
Looking at the cover picture, the area around the cockpit looks quite faded. Maybe you could go back and randomly apply some lightened camouflage colors in that area. Other than that, she looks really fine!
27 June 2018, 05:31
Martin Oostrom
Yes, after a gloss layer I'll get yo work with some oils. Thanks Patrick
27 June 2018, 06:33
Spanjaard
looking forward to that
27 June 2018, 08:36
Patrick Hagelstein
👍
27 June 2018, 21:24
Donald Dickson II
To illustrate the point of it really is in the eye of the beholder...

Patrick sees the faded areas around the cock pit as an area to correct. Thats according to his eye and interpretation. And thats fine.

Me, I look at it and say good job fading the paint. The SEA camo tended to fade in totally NOT uniform ways. This is not SEA camo per se, but on the same lines. So, to my eye and interpretation, it looks smashing.

Being totally and completely nit picking, it looks as if the bottom part of the sharks mouth decal, around the nose gear, did not settle down all the way. Besides that, I see nothing out of place.
28 June 2018, 00:33
Martin Oostrom
You're right about the mouth. Couldn't get it in much further and it's on the underside...... I'll fade the paint totally randomly as I never have a clue what I'm doing anyway 😉
Thank you gents for the suggestions, much appreciated.
28 June 2018, 06:51
Patrick Hagelstein
That's the cool thing about this forum Donald, because I thought the gap in the decal was meant to be there for the pitot tube. So everyone experiences different things by looking at the same pictures and it's up to the builder to select the remarks worthwhile to him/her. 🙂
28 June 2018, 19:41
Martin Oostrom
Lode be quiet the others might hear you. Nobody needs to know everything I build is nice due to sheer dumb luck.
There's a gap for the pitot tube, which is slightly off centre. After finishing I'll post some close up pictures.
28 June 2018, 19:49
Patrick Hagelstein
Check! I see what you mean. Nothing a little bit of red paint can't fix. 👍
28 June 2018, 20:34
Spanjaard
there is a lot more in your builds than dumb luck my dear Martin😉
28 June 2018, 21:29
Olivier
Hello Martin. In the kit description I see the French version is noted as having served in Algeria in 1975. It is obviously wrong. What is the true version ?
28 June 2018, 21:50
Donald Dickson II
Patrick, precisely my point sir! 🙂 People see different things to call out. Not that there is ever much to call out with Martins builds.
28 June 2018, 22:47
Martin Oostrom
Donald, check out these albums 😉
WALL OF SHAME: Revell Fokker D VII | Album by Mahoo76 Evolution of skills. | Album by Mahoo76
Like everybody else, I came from far. Having modelled some 20 years before sure helped. And now it's just choosing the right angle for the photos to hide small defects 😎

Olly, the instructions never mention Algeria, so I removed it from the kit description. Sharp eye 👍 There is no mention of time or place for the French version
29 June 2018, 05:50
Donald Dickson II
I dont think any of us started out doing museum pieces (I still dont). Your first attempts back to the hobby were far from bad sir.

👍 One of my favorite Century Series jets!
8 July 2018, 02:25
Martin Oostrom
Had a birthday party last night. A friend turned 42, so we celebrated with a beer or... more.
Woke up this morning with a alcohol fogged brain, reading a reference to the SS. Had to read it a couple of times. Is Peter actually saying I made the Schütz Staffel happy? Then common sense kicked in, it's Super Sabre, and the happy part refers to the shark mouth grin. Sunday morning 0900 and my day is already made 👍😎
Calvin, the Centuries are some of the best looking jets ever.
8 July 2018, 07:40

9 July 2018, 02:11
Martin Oostrom
Okay, the vacation in France was a delight. Now back to more important stuff😎
Apparently the paint was still sticky when I left. I neglected to put a cover over her so now she's covered in dust that won't let go. I'm not KC, so I won't strip her and start all over again.
I added a pinstripe wash for the panellines, tried to bleach the paint a bit, but the dust interfered a bit. Now she has a whitish hue that won't show on the pictures well. Anyhow, demasked the engine and covered the lot in a matt varnish.
Next is final assembly and then forget about this build asap.
31 July 2018, 16:03
Erik Leijdens
Looking very good Martin!
31 July 2018, 16:07
Peter Hardy
You call that dust???? Marty, you got NO idea!
31 July 2018, 21:13
Kerry COX
One of my all time fav's of the 'Century series' jets. Especially the discoloration of the rear fuselage from the deep set afterburner. I love it. And, I hope to find one in 1:48 soon.
31 July 2018, 21:49
Greg Baker
Wow. That's looking fantastic. I can't see any dust problems,
31 July 2018, 22:58
Patrick Hagelstein
As the bleaching is sealed in now, would it work to go over it with very fine polishing pads and then reseal it?
1 August 2018, 00:24
Konrad -
Very very nice looking Sabre Martin! Great Job 👍
1 August 2018, 04:28
Łukasz Gliński
What's the story behind the 'measles', Martin?
1 August 2018, 06:40
Martin Oostrom
Patrick you're a genius. Will give it a try.
Łukasz, instead of spraying a lightened paint, I apply random spots of white oil paint which are spread out with a thinner moistened brush. This gives a bleached look. In this case I applied too much, about half would be enough. There's also some brown and green in there for colour variation.
Some brown in shadow/dirty places works fine as well.
1 August 2018, 07:22
Alec K
Looking very good Martin. What would a model build be without a little wtf... Where in France was the vacai?
1 August 2018, 11:47
Martin Oostrom
😄 wtf indeed
We went one week to Pierrefit-sur-Sauldre, a très petit village some 50km southeast of Orléans. The second week was spent in Normandy, on a camping just 3km south of Omaha Beach.
1 August 2018, 11:53
Spanjaard
so you visited all the museums in the area right?😉
1 August 2018, 12:16
Cuajete
Looking very good, Martin!
1 August 2018, 12:21
Martin Oostrom
Yeah Spanjaard, it was the third time this decade we went to Normandy. I visited most of the museums. The American cemetary remains a must see. The underground memorial is very impressive and the cemetary itself is a place to stir emotions. On the one hand, the yanks did a very good job in the layout of the place, just as the maintenance. It's just a beautiful place. On the other hand, there are the stories behind those 9000+ graves and the wall of the missing. Overall it's a beautiful place, with a stunning view of Omaha Beach itself. In my opinion, it's in the best place it could be.
This year I took the kids (9 & 12 years old), just to pay respect and to see what liberty costs.
1 August 2018, 12:41
Patrick Hagelstein
I know....... 😄 Good luck! I hope it can help you to get that dust off! 👍
1 August 2018, 13:27

My parents took me to Margaten cemetery in the south of the Netherlands on a regular basis as my brother and I were still young. Now, whenever I go to Maastricht, I just stop by to have a little moment of silence. It still remains an impressive sight, I can only agree on that.
1 August 2018, 13:31
Greg Baker
That sounds like a great vacation spot - for multiple reasons. I've never been to France, but it's on my bucket list.
1 August 2018, 14:49

Beside all the history, Omaha Beach is a very nice sandbeach for recreation as well. Just feels very odd the first time you take a swim or build a sand castle.
1 August 2018, 15:20
Cuajete
It's on my bucket list too. Nice experience, Martin 👍.
1 August 2018, 18:18

been in the beaches a decade+ ago... need to go again and see a few things i did not last time. like the cemetery. thanks for the tip
1 August 2018, 19:39

I would love to get over there and see that. My grandfather is buried at
Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial
Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France. Not sure if that is even close to the beach or not. Regardless, its awesome you got to go.

Oh, the Sabre is looking great! LOL
1 August 2018, 22:50
Patrick Hagelstein
The Vosges are a low mountain range very close to the German border. Far from the coast though.
1 August 2018, 23:10

Wow, I am jealous. Definitely on my bucket list as well: take it all the way from Holland, through the French coast down to Spain.

Guys if you can, visit the place. Gives a whole new perspective on sacrifice and the cost of freedom.

Meanwhile I glued all bits and pieces on the plane. I'll let the glue cure for an hour or so and then it's the last touch ups and done.

Did you polish it out?
2 August 2018, 11:55
Martin Oostrom
Patrick I tried. In most spots, she came clean. Only on the wing joint I could quite get the job done.
A recap. Aires cockpits do look the part. But this one fit like sh*t. Not sure if they're my cup of tea. As her left leg needs some more drying time, she's on supports for now.

I screwed up in a couple of places.
The gunsight wouldn't fit where it should, despite dry fitting before closing the fuselage. As a desperate measure I just glued it on the dash, to prevent an 'empty' look.
The liquid mask used on the canopy refused to dissolve completly. As the canopy was sort of cracked already, I didn't bother to get it more transparent.
The Ammo rainmarks effect dried nearly instantly and took a lot of effort to get it down to acceptable levels.

Despite all this, I think she looks nice. She could have been better, but also a lot worse.

Looks very nice. Martin. Congrats!

You wanted to go for that grubby look and you nailed it! 👍 Despite the shortcomings you mentioned, she looks absolutely gorgeous! And remember, this kit had a couple of 'news' and 'unknowns' for you too, you learned a lot building this particular kit and that's something you can bring along building your next project! Thank you gentlemen. Patrick you're right. But I'm very critical of my own builds. Who isn't?

That's true and sadly that gets me blocked on a build more than once... 😉 Good to see you pulled it through though! 👍

That is one hell of a build Martin. 👍 The images posted and the processes you used were really enlightening mate. 👍
The PE bits you dealt with would have had me reaching for the electron microscope. ! truly stunning. 🙂
From all the grinding and gap filling and re scribing, you have turned out something that will look good on a comp table mate, and even better in your display case. 🙂 👍
Beautifully done. Salute. 👍

Shark mouth teeth need a polish Marty. Other than that it is acceptable.

Grumpy Mr Hardy gets intimidated by Mr Oostrom knocking out 500 beautiful builds a year. Along with Yoda, Salute!

i think it looks pretty good, and lessons learned will make next even better. about Aires, i have to say that my experience is similar, you have to sand until you think it is transparent... and then it is only half way. but they have the best detail you can see on a cockpit.

Don't let it go to your head. I still hate the sharks mouth! What's next Marty? Finish another or start a new one?

I just went back and reviewed the whole build. I think I must've missed some. What a great job from start to finish. I really don't see any of the imperfections you mentioned. There's always room for improvement, but since there's not one thing I could've done better, I'm at a loss to point out where.

Ignore Peter and the shark mouth comments. He's having flashbacks to that surfing incident in his youth. I hear that's common for people in Australia.😉

You laugh at my expense Greg but, I did have a shark experience while swimming in my youth! They don't scare me but little spiders do!

Whoops. Perhaps I should've been a bit more sensitive... I'm out of practice on the friendly banter bit. I pulled back from a "one arm modeling" crack, but maybe I should've just left it alone.

Martin, honestly, there is not anything I can see that I would criticize. Excellent job. 🙂

An other heartfelt thank you guys. After a good nights sleep, I'm seeing what went well, instead of what could have been better. It was quite a struggle to get her finished, I don't exactly know why. She got put on hold a couple of times. Now that's she's done, I'd have to make some progress on either the Vigilante or the Graf Spee. There's a new kit coming from Poland, that I will start as soon as it's here. Peter will like it 😉 but for now it's a little secret….

Peter, I think Greg was still a bit annoyed with me about a joke I made about a contest he joined. He was supposed to get back at me, I guess he got misstaken because you and I are so alike?

Lode, I love that fish plane! Was it just a random google search or did you know it existed?

Good peint job. for information the belly is Duck Egg Blue and no arrestor hook.
3 August 2018, 21:53
Martin Oostrom
Yeah, Kerry is the boss 👍

Julien, merci. I tend to build a nice looking model instead of a scale replica. The instructions from Tamiya called for a metallic grey. So I chose the gun metal grey. Duck egg blue? Never saw a duck egg myself 🙂
