Hi Scalemates! What happens when you finish up a resin kit? Another resin kit of course! Now it's time for a Supermarine Scimitar, using the exquisite CMR kit. I'm just getting started, but I can say that the casting and level of detail on this kit is considerably better than their Buccaneer which I built last year. They get better with each new release. Beautiful! 🙂

Looks interesting. I have never built a resin kit before, but your models turn out fantastic!

Michel Huijghe
That looks fanatastic. I used to have the T-2 Buckeye from Collect-Aire. That's a full of crap. Very poor detail, bubbles and wrapage. And it's expensive.

Stefan Schneider
I like the quality of CMR kits. I have their Vampire and Venom kits and although I didnt start to build them right now they look very good to me.

Thanks, folks. I've posted a couple of new photos, the first shows some filler needed inside the intakes - best to do that now! Second, I discovered the vertical fin has four voids (bubbles) in it - drat! Not in the best places, either. Oh, well, don't put the filler away yet. Last, I've started painting some of the internal structure with Alclad and a black wash. Amazing detail in the gear bays. 🙂

I finished painting the cockpit and ejection seat, photos uploaded. Instead of painting the pit black, I used a very dark engine grey. It will look very dark in the pit when the fuselage is closed up, and you'll be able to see the details better. Eduard supplied the PE for this kit, and I really like the seat harnesses. Very realistic, right down to the stitching (visible as an "X" in some locations on the fabric)! Just about time to join the fuselage halves together.

Nice work!

The cockpit detail & finish is awsome!

Thanks, folks! Some more updates to report today - I've added the instrument panel to the pit, mounted everything in the fuselage, and joined the halves together. I used superglue to fill the seams, and sanded everything smooth.

Wings have been added, no filler needed. The vertical tail was another matter - the fit was not so good, and there was a huge gap at the aft end of the fin on the bottom. Reading other build reviews of this kit, everyone has had the same problem. Oh well, that's what God made filler and sandpaper for! New photo uploaded! 🙂

More updates (finally!). I've painted the little beauty - I used Testors RLM 21 (Semi-Gloss White) on the underside, and then darkened that color with a drop of grey and dirtied it up a bit. The Scimitar had a reputation for a dirty bottom! For the topside, I used Gunze H333 Extra Dark Sea Grey, and post shaded with H331 Dark Sea Grey. I like the effect, I really can't wait until the transfers go on. That's when she starts to really get some character. Next up is the gear and wheels so the bird has some legs! 🙂

I've posted several new photos of the Scimitar. The bird has legs, and I've added the PE boundary layer intake parts. The wing fold and blast areas have been painted - I think this is getting very close to transfer time! The new pictures were taken at the correct exposure (the first shots were a stop or two underexposed), so now the fuselage looks much more like it does with your eyeballs. Sorry about the earlier photos 🙂

Great job so far !!!
24 September 2013, 14:45
Bill Gilman
@Zimmermaniac - the fit of the resin is extremely good. The only area where it was not so good was the fit of the wing root. I needed some filler there. Everything else fits as good as an injection kit. Being resin, there were some pinholes to fill, but CMR is one of the best in that regard.
I enjoy a good resin kit, the detail is fantastic and the subject matter are usually the aircraft that aren't represented in the mainstream. There are some 1:72 injection kits of the Scimitar (Frog, Skybirds, Contrail, Merlin, Xtrakit, etc.) but the detail and accuracy of this kit is superior.

Stunning to say the least!

Hi mates, the Scimitar project is nearing completion. Lots of work accomplished on the fiddly bits and the stuff that hangs underneath! Now we just have to add all of it to the model some way...oh, and I have to finish blending the windscreen into the fuselage. Probably should have done that earlier, as I can never sand the windscreen to get a perfect fit. 🙂

The wall paste (photo 47) worked great! Have a look at photos 48 and 49, I think the windscreen blends into the fuselage nicely now. I added the drop tanks last night and will finish this off over the weekend. Just a small bit of painting left (navigation lights on the wingtips) and some decals that I forgot. There are some red stripes along the edges of the air brakes. These didn't come with the kit, so I'll be off on a journey through the spares box. 🙂

Thanks, everyone! By the way, I needed to go to the decal box to find something I needed that didn't come with the kit. Can anyone spot the decal that I used, which originally came from the Minicraft 1:32nd scale F-16? Even though the Scimitar model is 1:72nd scale, this is not a trick question! The decal is on the outside of the plane.
30 September 2013, 19:12

HI Bill, almost everything has been said, i think that you achieved a great result from a difficult kit with an "annoying" paint scheme. Congratulations, as usual an amazing finish.

Album info

Yet another Group Build on Britmodeller, and yet another resin kit! This one is absolutely beautiful in the box, CMR get better with each new release. I also picked up the folding wing set from CMR, and that's the way I will build the model. The Scimitar was one of the most beautiful early jets, I can't wait to finish the build!
