Gotha GL.VII(Av)105/18 - Bat Project

Album image #1
Here start my adventure with this Bat Projects kit: it is a Limited Edition with Mercedes engines, and it is a good/excellent real "old time" short run kit.
The level of details is very good, but in some area they need some "help" to pop up, as here on the top wing radiator covers: on the right I have already scribed in the opening that is still blanked off in the left one.

Album image #2
This picture clearly shows why I said that is a good kit: the sidewalls are fully detailed and are really in scale thickness, to the point that they are translucent!!!

Album image #3
All interiors parts are cleaned and ready for painting.
I had to check an sand numerous times the two bulkheads and the pilot floor because they were too wide

Album image #4
Painting stages started: I gave a light brown-yellow coat, then some oils red brown filter

Album image #5
Album image #6
When the oils were nearly dry, I brushed in with an old scruffy one, to simulate some veins

Album image #7
After some more filtering with red brown and black oil color I call the interior detailing and painting finished: I added a pair of Eduard's seatbelts and some levers but all the rest is from the box

Album image #8
Album image #9
Album image #10
Dryfitting... it looks like is gonna be a hard fight!

Album image #11
desperate times call for desperate measures...

Album image #12
more desperate measures...

Album image #13
whoever lasts it wins! Not quite straight or square, but I cannot do it better.
I have started working on the engine nacelles, wings are cleaned and ready.

Album image #14
Finally resumed this project: some time ago I airbrushed some Mr. Surfacer and today, while I am waiting for a clear coat on my FW 190A-4 to dry, I polished all the surfaces and masked all the areas previously painted in "slate grey" ( I used Mr. Hobby RLM02...), ready for a white coat and preshading to go under my Aviattic Lozenge decals

Album image #15

Album image #16
On the fuselage all is ready for some wood imitation...

Album image #17
Oils on a Tamiya Dark yellow base...
Looks like wood to me...

Album image #18
Album image #19
Album image #20
I do LOVE Aviattic decals: just add (warm) water, simple as that!!!

Album image #21
Getting ready for the final lozenge decals session!

Album image #22
Tailplane nearly done!

Album image #23
I have found another use for uniPOSCA paint marker: rib tapes!!!

Album image #24
Wings ribbed!!! It took me one hour, more or less...

Album image #25
Album image #26
This markers are great, on a glossy surface you can wipe them away with a Q-tip if or wash them away with water when dried, if needed.

Album image #27
Here I have already given a clear gloss coat to protect them and getting ready for the wing crosses, last decals to go on!

I am approaching the final assembly and rigging...

Album image #28
Slowly getting its shape...

Album image #29
Easy steps done, from now on it is getting serious...

Album image #31
Album image #32
See you next year!!!

Album image #33
Struts and rigging finished! Now I can start breathing again!!!

Album image #34
Album image #35
Tomorrow will do some touch ups here and there, then small bits and next days the final challenge: the flimsy undercarriage...

Album image #36
Calling this one finished!
Had to use a new different photo set up, not quite happy with the lights used.
I will do some more practice in the next days, in the meanwhile I hope you like it

Today I was finally able to take some pictures outside: this model is quite big compared to the fighters I usually build and I don't have a proper large scenery background, so I had to crop some of the larger images.
I hope you will like them anyway!

Did you use the markers with a straightedge? Or did you mask?
28 December 2021, 00:14
Andrea Brenco
I used with a flat and wide (4 mm.) plastic struts as a ruler, no mask

Bas, Moreno, David, Mark and Spanjaard thank you a lot! @ Robert: yes it is a very peculiar looking aircraft, like many other German projects of the time it reminds me of the "Wacky Races" contraptions!!!

Robert Podkoński
Wow! I have been convinced that actually she is bigger, but this comparison with Tamiya paint jar gives a sense. And a lot of rigging I see there. Chapeau bas, Andrea!

Thanks to all guys, you really make me blush !!! I wasn't expecting such a positive reaction!!!
In the next days I will try to take some better pictures and post them as I said.
If you want to build a WWI model I absolutely suggest to buy some of the beautiful GasPatch Model products, they are a real pleasure for the eyes and are so easy to use that you will not regret and will forget of every other similar products in different medium.
Today I gave a thoroughly clean to the desk and regain the room I have progressively lost in the last couple of years... Now ready for new adventures...
Many thanks again to everybody

Thanks Pierre and Lukasz! In the past I was frightened by rigging too, but when I discovered elastic thread it is not a problem, just a bit boring sometimes... 🙂
