I have this in my stash as well, am actually thinking about making this my next project once the tug boat is finished.

Okay, started this one. It seems I'm incapable of building two planes/cars/whatever in successive builds. I kinda need the change.
It goes together fairly easy. Tender was done in a couple of hours. How I'm going to paint it in two-tone livery? Not sure yet, lots of nooks and crannies.
The loc chassis was eay enough. The boiler is a two part piece. In my case with a small step: sanding. Some primer will reveal whether I left enough detail.

First ever train, by the way 😄

Welcome folks!
I really need to find some way to decently paint the bogey and chassis. Lots of intersecting parts.

Glued what could be glued. Prepped all parts for primer.

how did i miss this build before. but for sure your last update got my eye..... 🙂

Tom ...
I missed this too. Real shame about the damaged pieces. Looking forward to the rest of the build.

Spanjaard
wow, you are really trying new things here Martin. looking great
17 December 2018, 20:07
Martin Oostrom
What I did is this: I primed in three different shades of red/brown. I hope this looks a bit like rust. Then I did a dark wash in spots. I then stippled some rust coloured pigment on the still wet wash.
Next I will spray some pigment fixer. When that is dry, I'll spray some thin layers of paint. Afterwards scraping with a sponge/toothpick/whatever should give some exposure to the primer/pigment mix. Then a rust wash should give the impression of a hard-working, maintenance needing loc.
Will I be able to pull it off? Time will tell!
17 December 2018, 21:12
Spanjaard
i am sure you will. are you trying with chipping fluid of hairspray?

I'm in too Martin!

Spanjaard, the pigment fixer should be enough….. But I will check this one again: scalemates.com/press/issue.php?id=229

I missed this and twenty six punch lines to feed Marty along the way. Sorry Martin, I have let you down!!! If you want to get rid of the plastic coal I can send you a real chunk. I spend most of my day on coal mines!
27 December 2018, 22:23
Martin Oostrom
I missed you to Pete! No apologies necessary among friends.
I'm afraid ithe coal would be out of scale 😉
About the colour though; painted black as it is and rub it with charcoal pigment and a 2b pencil for some shine? Or leave the pencil out?
27 December 2018, 22:35
Peter Hardy
Coal is very glossy but non reflective black in the gaps. I would try a black gloss and use a brush to deaden the gaps and joins between the lumps or even a very thin black wash. The dust on the metal bin surface will be a dark grey getting lighter as it thins.
27 December 2018, 23:55
Martin Oostrom
The dust should be easy enough with some carbon black pigments. I might have some dark grey as well.
The lumps are painted satin black right now. Getting the joins matt will be a handful. Will give it some thought once I had my first coffee of the day.
Thanks! 👍

It might be a bit hard to get a fine thin line inbetween the lumps. They are very fine detailed. See pic 53. 🙁
28 December 2018, 09:22
Peter Hardy
Hmmm, I have a lump of coal in my front garden, (don't ask) I'll flick you a pic on Monday if you can hold off that long?
28 December 2018, 12:01
Treehugger
Maybe the pile of coal should be a little dusty? (Or, maybe the walls inside should be dusty perhaps I am thinking.)
28 December 2018, 16:12
Martin Oostrom
Hi Pete, just chugged along, thanks for the offer though.
Treehugger, I put on some Vallejo Carbon Black pigments and added some shine with a pencil.
As the decals were too bright in my opinion, I added some new pigments act as rust. Vallejo Fresh Rust is too pinkish, so I had to add a light rust wash from Ammo as well. The more shades of rust, the better?
The drive shafts are glued as well. All I want to do now is mist some grime over the lower half of the train to blend in all the colours.
As always, comments and tips are welcome!

Thanks Bunch Buddies. Now I'm working on my Tamiya Nissan, I realise what I liked on this build: No flash or mold lines. Who would have guessed a Revell kit could be better in that regard than a Tamiya?
