Hey ya'll.. I'm alive, just lost confidence in the hobby for a while. I'm building an art desk so I can pull my supplies out and give them a proper home, then I'm going to dig back into it, finishing off the Aussie truck first. (I have also been playing alot of ATS/ETS2 and Car Mechanic Simulator 2018, and coloring with pens and pencils) I've also been in a SH#T funk depression for several, several months, but I think I may be feeling a little better...

Glad to see you back, I was about to send some comrades to your house to check on you ! Glad to hear things are getting better and I speak for all your mates here, we all look forward to your builds and off the cuff comments !

Yay! But seriously Chris, finish the aussie truck first? You asking for depression? 🙂 Joking. I'm going to finish that truck someday too but it's going to take some nerve. It was nearly the undoing of Danny!

Chris Greathouse
Good point, maybe I'll keep the Aussie truck in the box for now and go for one of the cheapos I bought at Hobby Lobby.

I was following Dannys (mis)adventure, very stressful.

My Aussie truck is still sitting half done. I'm sure Chris will finish his before I do 😄
I'm finally getting my wingy-thingy skills sharpened and those trucks are a whole different deal. Hats off fellows!

Great to hear again from you Chris 👍 It has been a weird year for all of us and still ongoing..
The Aussie truck sure gave me some grey hair lol but glad it's finished 😄

Now I'm trying to build a garage dio 🙂

Well, I'm designing my art area now, I just redid the top of my office desk with one of those epoxy kits. It looks super cool, I also added a cord run to hide everything. I'd rather not work with paints/hobby stuff on my new desk (where I worked on my art before, hence the new art area)

Here are some pics of my new desk and cord run.

SORRY BILL!!! I'LL TRY TO SPEAK UP 😛 I think it's amazing, that I'm gone for a year I come back and you all pounce on me with welcome back. Very humbling. Thank you.

Wow, great work on the desk! Looks killer! Nice monitor setup for ETS2. Do you have wheel and pedals too?
8 February 2021, 18:58
Chris Greathouse
Of course 😛 Logitech G29... Game is ok on keyboard/mouse/controller, but the wheel and pedals brings the immersion and realism and fun to the next level.

And thanks on the desk 🙂 it was fun. The art desk is just going to be simple boards wacked together with screws and simple shelves... The hard part will be getting my father (who has all the cutting tools and is willing to help) to stay simple (for his sake too... I just want wham bam done)... BUUUUUT He has old man Artsy-Fartsy disease and OCD. He'll want to build a grand desk with lots of ideas that aren't simple, and won't shut up about them lol... I'll have to smack him with a rolled up news paper every 5 minutes... no... down, not that idea... down boy... lol

Hey Chris, back from the void I see.. Or was it the Quantum realm? Fortress of Solitude? (I visit there too sometimes). I remember how cool you were to me when I was a noob here, so.. it's good to see ya dude. Now get to work😉

So my art desk is coming together nicely, it's a bit small, only 30in x 24in, but I'm limited on room, so it is what it is.

What do you guys think of these two lights? The bar light will be clipped onto the left side and the magnifier light will be clipped on the right side. Both of them are super bright 2200 Lumens and appear to be good quality with lots of articulation. The bar would be the everyday light, and the magnifier light would come in as needed for extra light (or to use as a magnifier). I thought they would pair well together.

Opinions would be great! $150 is a bit to spend on lights, but worth it for good quality and brightness, I just want to be looking at the right features and stuff.

And is 2 super bright (dimmable) lights too much? Should I just buy one or the other? lighting kind of sucked at the other desk, the best lighting came from that little led strip in the paint booth lol. I want overkill. and I want it moveable.

Well, I'm a cheap bastard, so I use a 5000 lumen led shop light for $20 from Harbor Freight. It has a rich natural light, and I hang it so the reflector is eye level. It is so bright, my camera has a hard time talking pics. I like it, though it's not the most attractive setup, it gets the job done. Plus it saves desktop space.

Chris Greathouse
Tom, would you ever get/need/want a 2nd 2200 lumen (possibly magnifier) light? like the setup that I'm thinking? Or does 1 light up the world bright enough to deal with all those little pieces?

I like the idea of having overkill light from 2 directions if needed.
11 February 2021, 03:07
Bill Newcomer
Chris, I have an old school 3 can halogen swivel bar under my upper level that gives off warm white and is dimmable. At full blast I can soften styrene under it. My secondary desk lamp is articulating which is fantastic. I made it better by removing the base and bolting it directly to the bench about a foot back from the front edge. It will NEVER fall over and it is never in the way. Be wary of the clamp on style. Sooner or later it will fail you. I would possibly be concerned about the flexible gooseneck ones. If they get worn they will tend to droop down on their own.

Great to see you back Chris, Motivation has been tough for a lot of people in the everyday is blursday world. Get an overhead LED strip light, and augment with a Magnifier light. I use a couple of Cool white 2 arm desklamps overhead and as I find any detail work needs assistance these days, I use a 5 x magnifier light on an arm for the close up. Get some microfiber cleaning cloths if you're going to spend a lot of time on the Magnifier, it gets messed up quick with your nose fogging it constantly.

Desklamps only seem to be available in UK (and OOS st the moment) and run from a USB power hub I have.

Not sure why they call it cool white and warm white, when the Cool is the higher temperature....

Are you planning on having the side bit for your whole work area, or pushing the keyboard back and doing the build on the big part?
11 February 2021, 03:36
Chris Greathouse
Neither... This is for a small art desk. I don't want to use my newly resurfaced office desk for art any more. (My office desk is art now)

There is a little bit of space on the opposite side of my room where I can make a small desk
(30" x 24"😢 and shelves, storing art supplies in a 'proper' place (and out of Rubbermaid containers where they have been hiding)... Also, there is almost zero light in this spot, hence the 2 bright lights I'm thinking of getting...

No computers here, just art, although I may vesa mount a monitor nearby and get a HDMI streaming stick for my Netflix and Chill addiction since I won't be able to see the computer from there. #firstworldproblems

Greg, holy smokes that is a bright light. is it/do you have it dimmable at all? Or is it just off or melting your face? 5400 lumens is BRIGHT. Awesome cave.
11 February 2021, 13:31
Chris Greathouse
Tom, can you snap a shot of your LED bar light (on its brightest setting) over your work area as you normally would have it while working. I'd like to see the output. Thanks mate.
11 February 2021, 15:47
Greg Baker
Chris - it's no dimmable, but having on the desk like I do is handy. Usually I'm looking at the back side of the bulb, so the light I get is reflected off the work surface. My "monkey business room" (a phrase coined by my wife) is by far the brightest room in the entire house. 🙂

Chris, here is a pic of my room and you can see the light: This and That | Album by tom... (1:24)

It's not super bright like Greg's. It does have 3 brightness levels but I always use it at brightest

I've decided on the bar light that Tom has, I think it'll fit better into the small space. That garage light is cool but a bit too bright for my eyes.

Wow, those are fun. Why do the Japanese get all the interesting model kits? I remember back in the day I built some kind of Suzuki Jeep kit. It came with several different coloured clear sprues with enough light lenses to make it look like a mini Coca Cola truck!
