Trumpeter HMS Belfast w/ Flyhawk (Huge!) detail set

Album image #1
After over 2 months and more than 150h, I think ... it has finally finished! I thank everyone who has followed my project and I hope you like the result!

FlyHawk is killing me! There are a hell of a lot of etched parts that have to be compared with the original parts of the assembly instructions. A lot of work, but the project will be hugely exciting and a tough challenge!

Album image #9
Don‘t forget to sand the surfsce!! afterwards u‘ll be gratful if you take this step 😉 did i already mention that there are too many etched parts 😉)

Impossible to do without a magnifying glass ..
*breathe*

Not so easy to process the parts with the new tool from RP Toolz ... The main curves of the anti-aircraft round armor are first formed, I first glue one side, the other side will then be further glued tomorrow ... um sure to go *push*

Album image #13
... Never thought of winding the spindle with yarn myself... Luckily I had bought Styrene profiles.

Album image #14
yarn is on it. Hold it briefly (!) with an open flame to remove the lint. You can see this after priming. But let's see what the result will be like.

Album image #15
With the second drum it got even smaller ... oh dear!

I didn't have a suitable profile here... I cut the cannon barrel in half and cut off the thickest diameter there in order to then glue it to the roll.

Album image #16
By the way, the commando bridge is also made of resin from the FlyHawk Detail Set.

Album image #17
It's progressing, enough for today. The round armor of the anti-aircraft guns hasn't become quite round, I'll see how round I can still get it tomorrow.

I wish you all a happy new year!!

Album image #18
Today it was the turn of the small radar antennas. I think these turned out well, I'm happy 🙂

Album image #19
Also, I decided to include one plane that is still in the hangar, half with the propellers sticking out, and the other fully visible on the catapult. Then some scratching on the garage door...at least a little. I never scratched before 😛

It was now the turn of the 152 guns. I noticed that the brass tubing from the FlyHawk Detail Set looked kinda weird and inconsistent. Luckily I had bought the master model set because the pipes looked more authentic there. You can also use the master model set (also parts made of resin) to raise the pipes separately.

Album image #30
Here on the left side the FlyHawk tubes. The middle tubes were much smaller than the two outer tubes.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the result. Everything works wonderfully!

Well then, most of the assembly is done, now it's time for priming....

The primer was finished a few days ago, and today the first coat of paint in dark sea gray is applied. Masking was very relaxing! 😉 Tomorrow it's the commando deck's turn.

The wooden slats were accentuated and then washed. Almost all parts except for the aircraft, main deck railing, rigging and drive were assembled. A complete filter from MIG (Blue Pale) was applied. Then gloss varnish so that I can attach the decals and then wash the superstructure. This is then sealed with matt clear varnish so that I can paint dry. Since I have tomorrow off again, I think I'll finish this week. *happy*

Album image #58
OK, the curve tool is easier to use the less pressure you allow on the blade. Learned something again 😉 I'm curious...

Gloss varnish applied, decals applied, then accent chipping, washing and highlighting. Now the railing, then the Redhull washing (oops, I forgot!), then apply the matt varnish and paint dry. Then my favorite relaxation: rigging!

Today I was finally able to continue working on the Belfast. Now I've experimented with the elastic rigging thread .... Let's leave it aside whether that makes technical sense, I find it interesting how it looks 🙂

I made the eyelets myself with thin wire. Also the idea with the jetty ladder... Man overboard, or something like that 😉

Nice to see another Belfast WIP. You made an excellent start on it 👍
I started mine in 2013 (not a joke) but had a lot of time in between not working on the model. I hope to finish her soon. Feel free to have a look to my WIP here on Scalemates:
HMS Belfast | Album by Christian Bruer (1:350)

I used the Flyhawk Set as well, but also the White Ensign Set and scratch building.

Looking forward to your progress and Happy Modelling 🙂

Q: How do you deal with any annealing issues? I thought that annealing metal small might melt off the smallest parts. Haven't tried annealing yet myself, except for a large PE piece on some project.
10 January 2023, 20:54
René K
@Treehugger: I generally don't glow PE parts. I glue all PE parts with the MXBON superglue in viscous, liquid and very liquid. Due to the capillary effect, the adhesive quickly gets into the crack, so I can press the part with a pin, two seconds and the part is fixed. If small gaps remain, use a fine pin to put a very thin layer of superglue (it has to be very liquid!) into the gap and press it down again with the needle. So far it works very well for me.

R K check the hight of the boat deck house aft of the forward funnel. I extended the hight a few milimeter, otherwise the boats on the cradles below will not fit! Check image 112 - 118 in my WIP. Add the one or other milimeter more than I did because of some layers of paint on the deck, cradles boats etc.!

Nice progress by the way 👍

Happy Modelling, Christian

@christian Bruer Thank you for the hint! I had already seen that when looking through your pictures and in fact the height doesn't match.

excellent work Rene. What are you using to hold the smaller pieces in place as you glue them together? Looking at image 21 I am baffled by how precise and clean that work is.

Thank you so much folks! @zach: With a magnifying glass, a calm pulse and good superglue ("VMS glue on power!"), I somehow managed to do it that way. I was amazed myself! 😉 @Michael: You were in London and saw her? I envy you!

Well unfortunately it wasn't me who was in London, but a friend of mine. He visited the Belfast.
