I have three sailing ships in my stash. If they turn out half as good as this, I'll be a happy man!. What material did you use for the sails? I have some irish linen in storage, which was originally old technical drawings from around 100 years ago, (I've had them over 30 years). I soaked them in cold water & the resin & ink washed away without a trace, leaving a perfect thin cloth for a job like this. I am considering using this and laying it over the vacformed sails from the kits, then starching them to the correct shape. Not sure if it will work, but I can only try! Another trick I learned many years ago to age and stiffen fabric sails is to brush on strong cold black coffee! I still have the old Hornby Golden Hinde which my Father build over 40 years ago, although a refurbishemnt is in order.

Hi John

Sorry for the very late reply as I dont get notifications of messages posted on thisas well as being very busy atm.

The material I used for the sails is quite simple, its basically cream coloured pillowcases on which I measure , draw, and cut the sails from after taking the measurements from the plastic ones, then I hand sew all the detailed stitching on to them.

Hope this helps my friend.

Album info

After 8 Months of loving this build, heavily improvising and pushing my capabilities, my 1759 ROYAL LOUIS - HELLER 1/200 is FINISHED.

5 months of building the kit and rigging her up and 3 months to Hand sew 20 sails and add reef lines, Bowlinesand Braces, I can honestly say I feel burnt out, strained but very happy.

It may not be perfect or historically accurate but I have pushed my own capabilities to the max, I still have a lot to perfect and learn, if I can.

But for now I can sit bk and enjoy her as I hope some of you will.

Happy modelling everyone and keep building and enjoying our great hobby and Art.
