Avia CS-92

Album image #2
I started with removal of kit's main wheel wells, in prep for Eduard's PE bits.

Album image #3
Some wall thinning was done as well.

Album image #4
Album image #5
Eduard's PE bits installed. I added styrene shapes to strengthen the whole affair.

Album image #6
Some styrene shapes were added...

Album image #7
... as was brass rod and copper wire.

Album image #8
I added styrene to strengthen the top fuselage seam, and added supports for the front wheel plate.

Album image #9
I made few modifications to the PE seats.

Album image #10
Front wheel well assembly. Styrene shapes were again used to give the box some strength.

Album image #11
Rear cockpit tub assembly. The fit of the cockpit into the fuselage was not, in my humble opinion, very good.

Album image #12
Although Eduard's PE set came with lots of cockpit bits, I found them not very realistic looking, and went with styrene instead.

Album image #13
The kit's instrument panel is actually very good, but a bit too thick for my taste.

Album image #14
As the CS-92 flew without armament, the cannon exits were faired over.

Album image #15
Front cockpit tub painted and weathered.

Album image #16
Album image #17
The nose needed quite a bit of weight.

Album image #18
Cockpit tubs installed, and detailing added.

Checking for a tail-sitter... All good!

Album image #21
Main wheel well primed with Mr. Surfacer

Album image #22
Wing's portion of the main wheel well ready to go.

Album image #24
Album image #25
Main wheel well painted and detailed.

Album image #26
Checking for fit and look.

Album image #27
Album image #28
Finally done with all the interior work. I decided to install the windshield now, as a lot of filling was needed to make it fit.

Album image #29
Wing's control surfaces from CMK are attached. It took a lot of time to modify the wing to accept these, and it did not help that some were warped. I did not use the tail surfaces from CMK as the kit's looked fine to me.

Album image #30
The engine parts from CMK installed. The starboard side engine went in fine, but the mating diameter on the port side engine intake did not match the kit's part well and a lot of sanding was needed.

Album image #31
Squadron's vac canopy masked. I did not find pre-cut mask, so used Tamiya tape cut to size. I hate masking canopies...

Album image #32
Almost ready for primer. The bottom needed quite a bit of Mr. Surfacer and Squadron putty, as the wing-to-fuselage joint is complex. My kit had a molding fault on the bottom of the port wing that needed fixing.

Watching, your detail level is outstanding

Thanks Lukas. I appreciate the hyperbole 👍. That said, I do find the detailing to be my favorite part of the process.

that explains the quality 🙂

Right? Ahh, if only the level of enthusiasm was directly proportional to the output quality...

Priming and final coat done. Now for the detailing, decals and final assembly. It's at this point when I usually screw something up 🙂

ha ha ha , i know what you mean, lots of work, and in the last detail.... i almost did it with my current model. almost finish, and a drop of supergrue got into my finger when i was handling it.... gave me a good scare! a bit ended in the model, but i manage to clean it almost completely without further damage....

Neil Page
super work Alec! ..hope your canopy is ok - the last Revell 262 I did I had to smash-mold a new one
3 March 2017, 08:49
Alec K
Thanks Neil. I do too: it's painted now, but one does not know until the masking comes off. I just hope the tape did the job. In the event, I went through three Squadron canopies due to a mixture of product defects and modeler inaptitude. Canopies are my bane 😄

Spanjaard: yeah, seems like closer to the finish, the bigger the challenge. I realized that for me it's the diminishing patience that causes most problems ("get this da*&@!& thing DONE!"😢. Speaking of: I just tore off the pitot tube and the antenna mast. So it goes...
3 March 2017, 12:58
Spanjaard
ha hahaha i know exactly what you meant. i am stuck with the details of black bunny now... i am about to clear the paint on some part that i painted "too fast" due to lack patience....

Exceptionally good result, I had to check again that it wasn't 1/48! You have excellent modelling and photo editing skills Alec. One suggestion I would say about the Photo edit, in my opinion, it would look more natural if the edges of the 262 and the bloke on the wing where 'feathered' slightly, to help blend them together, and into the background.

Thanks everyone for the comments, much appreciated. gorbygould: I know, the montage does need some more work. Thanks for the suggestion 👍

Absolutely cool, these Chech stencils - even though I know it's a Chech aircraft, they look quite different from what one could expect here... and B&W&colour photo-montage, just excellent! Best regards, Hubert

Stunning job Alec 😉. Always nice to see the post war machine in CZ colours.

Thank you gents. I agree regarding the Czech insignia on the Me 262 - I believe that CZ was the only country that operated the type postwar. Fun project, this was 🙂

I don't know why I missed this fine sample of modelmaking. Not only an excellent realisation, but also a unique subject. Very well done 👍

Album info

I originally planned to use Smer's kit No.156 (Heller mold) in my stash. The kit quality is very nice for its day, but the raised panel lines just did not go with the amount of detailing I was planning. In the event, I went with the Revell kit as my cursory snooping suggested it to be superior to the Hasegawa release.

The kit went together very well. My copy had a casting defect on a wing, but overall it was a pleasure to build. CMK sets were very good also, although some warping was present on the control surfaces. Squadron canopies were ok. Eduard PE set was good, although I did not use most of the cockpit parts and a good portion was for the radar equipment not pertinent to CS-92. Kora decals were acceptable, but the resin wheels it came with were worthless (went with the kit's wheels). I used the national insignia from the Tally-Ho decal set, as Kora's were, per my sources, undersized.
