Thanks for the comments, guys. Rui S, the idea I had for this model was to show an old farm truck being rebuilt into a street machine by a high school kid in his auto shop class. The engine, transmission, brakes, wheels and tires have been done, but the bodywork, bed, and interior will have to wait for next semester.

rust and chipping is certainly something i still need to get to... but you seem to have mastered it already. sweet.
door dent is simply perfect.

I'm still learning to do rust and weathering. The technique I use is actually quite simple: I base coat the model in whatever color I've chosen, then I usually do a wash to dull down the color a bit, and bring out any detail, then I put an array of rust colors on my wet palette, and slowly and carefully build up the rust patches a little at a time until the model looks "right". I finished with various dry pigments where I want a more diffuse, rusty patina, and for dirt and grime, and I used graphite for those areas of heavy use where the paint is completely worn away, but rust hasn't been able to form. The key with any technique, I believe, is to look at lots of pictures and study where rust and damage occurs, and what it actually looks like.

thanks a lot Mike. I am actually "collecting" rust pictures with that purpose in mind😉

very interesting to see that you can get such a beautiful look, without chipping fluids and all that stuff.... 🙂 I like that.

My approach is a bit tedious, especially on a larger or more heavily weathered model, but by the time I get to that stage of the finishing, I'm quite excited to see how things will turn out, so the process is more enjoyable and interesting than tedious. I also have a habit of telling myself a story about how the model came to be in the state it will be in when finished. That can give me additional ideas for weathering and rusting details.
