That must have taken a LOT of softener to get those decals on. And I don't see any silvering....lucky you! Nice job.

Thanks 🙂 The Rennaissance decals are really good. The are good quality and well thought out as where to put the joins. So there was only a little bit of silvering and the only bit that actually needed extra softener was over the door handles.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give my any beginner's tips for making custom decals?
I don't have a colour printer so I think my options are either buy some decal paper and take it to a local print shop or try and find a UK based company (to avoid customs charges) that will make them for me. The latter option feels like the best option if anyone has any recommendations for decent companies that do this.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

ah, forgot to mention, if you buy a laser printer, they usually come with the toner included, so you do not need to buy that from day one. but be aware that some brands (all?) sell the machines with toner cartridges that contain much less toner that the ones that you will buy later, obviously to ensure you buy some soon 😉

Thanks for all the detailed info. I'll probably start on an older car, that only requires a few decals, to see how it goes. Then I can see if I want get a printer or research companies that will do it for me 😄.

Kudos for the effort, I've made one and it's absolutely horrible kit for such an interesting topic. Great result!

I'm glad it wasn't just me who struggled with it. I took a look at your model and using another kit as a donor is a really great idea. At least you got the right wheels and all the decals 😄

Yeah I was lucky to find that chassis by chance, but the fitmen wasn't very great... About the decals I had the same issue, looks like MF hasn't solved it, I just design them and printed by myself since they don't provided any solution, I'm glad that at least I get the wheels right.

Picking the colour was quite interesting because there are only about 3 colour photos of this car and given the age of them it is difficult to tell what the original colour was. Looking at other models, people have picked colours ranging from bright orange to almost tan brown. I didn't take a photo of it but I did try various different mixes of paints on the body work. In the end I thought pure Tamiya copper (XF-6) looked the closest to the original.
The base Ebbro kit for the road car (Citroën DS19 (Ebbro 25005, 1:24)) is excellent. It has a great level of detail especially on the engine. The opening bonnet and door are really nice too. It even has adjustable ride height on th rear to model the hydropneumatic suspension. It all fitted together easily. I don't think the kit is still in production unfortunately I managed to track this one down on eBay from a model shop in Japan what would ship it internationally.
The Renaissance decal kit (Citroën DS19 #176 (Renaissance TK24/422, 1:24)) was nice too. It is obviously just a few decals but it did come with a colour print out of the photos of the car.
Given the rally cars of this era were pretty close to stock there wasn't too much modification required to the kit. I removed the wheel trims and the wing mirrors. I customised the brake lights as the kit had slightly different ones. I added the extra driving lights which were actually included in the base kit. The extra fog lights beneath the bumper are from a Mk1 Ford Escort. Then just a bit of left over seat belt for the bonnet strap finished it off.

Oh yeah Colin McRae captured the public's imagination in a way that I don't think any other rally driver has, if you ask people to name a rally driver I think most people are going to name him. I think this is down to his always pushing to the limit style of driving but I also think that game had a big impact on his reputation too. That game was where it all started for me, I still have the goal of building all the cars from that game. I have built 6 out of the 12 and I have another 3 in my stash, the difficult one is going to be finding a kit of a Škoda Felicia.

Thanks. It it Gloss Ultramarine Blue (Revell 51) I know it is the wrong blue. I chose it to match my very first kit I built which was the 1998 Impreza WRC and I used the wrong blue on that kit as it was the closest shade of blue stocked by the shop I bought it from.

Thank you, I think this car often gets overshadowed by the later Imprezas but I do rather like it with its squeaky little turbo blow off noises.

It may not have been well suited to rally but it sure looked good doing it.

Thank you, it is always my intention to build all the kits I buy but I do have quite a backlog at the moment 😄

Great little model of a Peugeot, they've made some great cars, I've owned and drive a 403, a 404,a 504,and a 205.
20 January, 12:52

Mr D, thanks for the tip. I've got a few Heller kits in my stash I'll try adding decal softener to the water if I run into similar problems again.
George, glad you liked the model. I've never actually driven a Peugeot, but given the number of cars I've driven is still in single digits that is not surprising. 😄
