Hans just saw your Crusader on Modeling Madness, awesome build. You really did a superb job on that old Monogram kit, I think you can graduate to better kits now.
Respectfully,
John B.

Thanks John and Tommy! Your praise means a lot, and it was cool to see it featured by Scott. And yeah it'll be awhile before I build another one of these for sure 😄

Been cooking up this idea since I got the 1/72 RF-8. My original plan was to build the plane in the cover of the Osprey RF-8 book, flown by Lt Andre Coltrin over Vietnam. With a little help from a 1/72 version of the Furball MiG Master sheet, I will rearrange the nose and tail numbers to make BuNo 146871 as it flew in Vietnam during its 1966 cruise off the USS Oriskany.
I also found an Academy F-8E, which has decals for a VF-111 jet that flew on the same cruise, so decided I will build it as the RF-8's escort, which they often had during their photo runs. I also figured, why not build them together? They will be displayed in flight.

Guy on eBay priced this at $350(!) presumably because it’s an out of production LE. I offered $40 and he accepted

Oh yeah hahah, I'd like to know if other modelers have a singular obsession with a specific subject like I do with the Crusader. Maybe it was because it had its own episode on Dogfights and featured a lot on Area 88. It's just a unique and aesthetically pleasing fighter jet. The Sword RF-8 release got me more into building some 1/72 scale so I'm getting a couple Academy kits and decals too.

Anyone have a good source for 1/72 Vietnam-era US Navy pilots? Seems like my best bet so far is to scrounge through older kits, not finding much

Not sure if you'll find exactly what you're looking for, but do take a look at Reedoak SCM Brand: Reedoak - more specifically: reedoak.com/#!/1-72/c/13281312

Hi Rando, unfortunately that's a subject surprisingly badly represented in 1:72. Still, we have this one here
US NAVY Pilot with bag - Vie..73 (Aerobonus 720 028, 1:72)
But it's just one pose. You can buy two or more and slightly alter the pose.

Thanks Marius, so it's not just me—really is because nobody makes it! It's too bad since I just need two figures that are seated, the most basic modeling pilot pose, lol. I'll probably just have to buy a few cheap 1/72 kits that I know have pilot figures so I can build what I have in mind, since idk if I can alter that resin figure that much.

Near future build of a special plane I would always see when I was a kid driving with my dad down I-5. He would always point out the Voodoo at Camp Murray. I was thrilled to learn that Caracal makes a near-perfect decal set to build this particular plane. Today I received custom decals for the specific aircraft number and name stencils, thanks to a kind gentleman on ARC forums. My plan is to build this as a diorama of the static display, concrete pedestal and all. Thank you Buckmeister for making this happen!

Glad to hear! I sought out a set with the camo on black, just looks really cool, and interesting history too.

Thank you Neil and Robert! Yes this was all done on a whim when a friend I was visiting in Texas wanted to build models together, so I hastily picked this one. I love the Lightning too, want to build it in 1/48 someday, but this one was fun for gaining confidence with masking especially. Can't say I will be again using Mission Models for painting full exteriors of a plane though, too brittle even with the poly. Gunze Aq for the red and white was so much better.

Yeah that's the one Jos, very cool design. I like the pineapple on the rudder too. Ahh I'm leaning towards building Tim Hubbard's MiG killer, would have an interesting load out with Zunis, and I gotta make a Checkmate Crusader at some point. Thanks everyone for the follows!
