A 1:72 scale figure for scale

Album image #17
Just a quick fit to see the size of this magnificent plane

Album image #18
And a complete dry fit to look what the end result will be..

Album image #19
Quite impressive 🙂 , a real beauty!

Last week I decided to build this poor fit kit into a smooth desktop model. Too much errors and low quality resin parts, so I decided to keep it a simple build.

Album image #22
Filler for the wide gap between the wing parts, and a lot of careful sanding to keep the thin resin wing structure intact

Album image #23
The transparent window parts.. very poor fit and 5 pieces missing! So I decided to use filler to get a complete smooth fuselage, and I will use spare black window decals after the paint job. Also did a dry fit of the wings; bad. Will also need filling and a lot of sanding.

Album image #24
The transparent cockpit window didn’t fit at all! It kept falling into the fuselage during dry fit, as it was not wide enough for the fuselage cockpit edges.
Also too small at the sides, so I needed to make an extra window to fill that gap.

As you can see, I used transparent Evergreen Plasticard to make a top and bottom support for the cockpit window. This way it has support so it won’t fall into the fuselage. Later I will cut the supports to the shape of the window-fuselage edges.

By the way: the resin cockpit was such poor fit that I decided not to use it.

Album image #25
Here you can see the better fit thanks to the transparent supports.

Album image #26
Still needs adjustment, filling and sanding when attached.

Album image #27
Removed the white sheet styrene aft window parts and replaced it with transparent plasticard pieces. After attachment I will fill and sand these aft windows so they become one with the fuselage.

Album image #28
The side windows in front of the wing roots also sanded smooth with the fuselage. They will be replaced by window decals later.

Album image #29
I decided to use a custom model plane stand for showing the model, instead of the poorly detailed resin trolley from the kit.
Therefore I need to make 2 holes in the fuselage for attachment; 1 for an axle and 1 for the screw that attaches the model to the stand. I glued the receiving screw part to the fuselage for a firm grip.

Album image #30
Dry test fit of the fuselage halves after drilling the holes

Album image #31
I also made a fuselage support. During test fit I noticed that the fuselage can be ‘squeezed’ a little in the middle, and as the resin wings + engines have quite a weight I want to prevent the wings from dropping downwards. So with this styrene support the fuselage has more strength overall.

Test fit, attached to the stand

Album image #33
Looks good so far!

Album image #34
Glued the fuselage halves together, and applied filler to the gaps

Album image #35
Album image #36
After that sanding the fuselage

Album image #37
I keep admiring the beautiful shape of this majestic plane..

Album image #38
Wings and tail parts attached, and dry fit of the props.

Album image #39
This kit is quite big and heavy, all that resin.. just like my C-5 Galaxy kit

Great project. Those Anigrand kits are a nice challenge.

It's a nice looking plane, that's for sure. I hope the old 1/144 Airfix kit I found has the same presence.

A front row seat please! Watching with great interest. P.S. After reading the novel by Ken Follet (Night over water) I'm a great fan of this flying boat. 🙂

Thanks gentlemen😊!
I almost start to like the 'resin challenges' that Anigrand produces..

@Carlo: the Airfix kit has the same and maybe even better presence.. The Anigrand version seems to have a more bulbous nose, and during the search for detailed photo material of this plane on the Internet (not easy..) I see more similarity in shape with the Airfix kit.

I wish I had the 1:144 Airfix decal sheet in 1:72 scale, as I need the 'Pan American Airways System' text and logo's.
Still thinking how to get that done🤔

@Bernhard: 😬Nice, I like reading and searched for the title you mentioned… Very interesting, thanks! I will try to order this book.

I watched a short doc on YT lately about a Clipper that 'accidentally flew around the world'.. recommended!
