Apparently nobody makes a OV-10B decal set in 1/48 scale.
12 September, 07:51
David Culp
The kit landing gear looks overly complicated and under strength. I ordered a brass aftermarket set, but it still relies on much of the kit gear, so I won't be using it. I now have a third option on order - a white metal set that appears to include all needed parts.

I wish KH had consulted with someone who knows the OV-10 before releasing this kit. First, the flaps are never left down. They are always retracted so that the cargo door won't damage the left-inner flap. Second, the control surfaces don't droop. Their natural position is the faired position. If the gust lock is installed (it's a fabric strap that wraps around the pilot's control stick and hooks under the right canopy sill - this pulls the stick to the right and aft), then the ailerons and elevator will be positioned as shown in photo 8. Plus, the right spoilers will be up.

Note: The spoilers are for roll control only, so you'll never see the left and right spoilers at the same time.

One of the things I learned about vacuform kits is that very thin objects, such a fighter jet wings and tails, don't form well. The wing surfaces are too flat and sometimes warped because there isn't enough tension on the material while it's being formed. Also, edges get rounded a bit, which means trailing edges need to be either 1) sanded down to a sharp edge, or 2) 3D printed or carved from wood instead.

In this case I printed wings and horizontal tails. Care must be taken to support the objects well for printing or they'll come out warped. Remember - it's easier to fix surface defects due to heavy supports than it is to fix warped parts. I learned that lesson with this project.

For the vertical tail I used the kit part, but I printed a new rudder. A printed vertical tail would look better, but I was worried about having too much weight at the rear of the airplane - making it a tail-sitter.

You will find out when it is on its wheels if you are correct (or not) about the angle. I can see that small kink in the top fuselage. It is minute but over the remaining length of the aft fuselage this results quite a difference in ground clearance at the tailpipe. Look at these picture just where the wing ends you can see a kink in the top fuselage profile:

Built with the cargo door open, so the cargo compartment is fitted with sidewalls, radio rack, hydraulic pump and oxygen bottles. The laser designator is 3D printed and mounted under the fuselage. Also added LORAN antenna under the left boom. 3D printed inlet covers.

NOTE 1: I used the brass undercarriage set by Aerocraft Models. Highly recommend.

NOTE 2: Every undercarriage set I've seen has the same mistake - there should not be a "scissors" on the right main strut. It should only be on the left main strut, and it's not really a scissors, it's a squat switch.

NOTE 3: I discovered the error after this model was already finished. I've corrected it on my next KH OV-10A project.
