Pfff...
thought to myself, lets start with a simple kit next to the Aussie groupbuild...

The Instruction manual is not much of a instruction manual 😛
All the parts in this trailer kit have stuff you need to get of, only way to get this done is with a dremel...
So there will be a great amount of time needed to get the parts ready before use 🙁

Also started with the body of the van, washed and primed atm

Danny Meer
It's insane the amount of crap I needed to get of the parts with a dremel...
After using the dremel, sanded the parts and looks alot better now 🙂

I've never worked with resin Danny, but that's a lot of clean up. Do you have to sand it lightly, to get a key for the paint?

Watching!

I'm in for this project. I could use a 1/1 trailer like that 🙂

Resin kits are a lot of work, but usually worth it for the Detail or unusual subject

Is first for me as well Bozz, not sure how you can best paint this thing..can I just use primer, do I need to sand it..I know you can't use same glue as normal kits 😛

Danny, I believe that you have to wash parts in soapy water and lightly sand, but I'm no expert. Looks like you're the guinea pig this time bud? Have you checked YouTube etc, for videos? PE I've done, resin I haven't. I've heard about the clean up, but this is the first time I've seen it. You can also check out the KFS site, for information. They're pretty good.

Got the body of the van ready for the flip flop color after a few layers of black 🙂
Gonna do some research on best approach on the resin

What is a flip flop color?

Danny, why dont you use a paint stand? Have you no trouble with the paint if it is dry to glue on the cardbord?
I always use one. if my tamiya paint stand is in use, i take a spraycan to put the body on or a bottle. Some tape on the cap to hold the body in the roof for falling down and it works.

Danny Meer
I place a piece of paper under it and after about 5 minutes I look if it stuck and if so carefully pull it loose.. But every time when I order stuff that I need, forget to order a paint stand lol
But now just ordered the Tamiya Spray-Work Painting Stand Set, will make it a bit easier 😄
16 May 2020, 18:12
Dominik Weitzer
🙂 definitely Danny. the paint stand is worth the money.

Got 3 layers of flip flop paint on it, but to much orangepeel atm, gonna light sand it and do another layer and hope it will be ok'ish 😛

What's the make and name of the color Danny? I can check locally to try and find it.

A coat of a complementary Flip Flop paint over the top could produce an interesting effect? Difficult to test before you go ahead though

I can also take a look in our stores around!
please post your can you used😉

This is the can used. called:
DupliColor Flip Flop Effect Tropical Spuitbus 150ml
Art.nr.: 665516
This 1 came from nonpaints.com/nl/ (CROP)
It's a discontinued product now, tried to find it online but nothing yet..

Danny Meer
Got an email from nonpaints shop that they had a similar color in warehouse that wasn't on the onlineshop but in a dusty corner. It's almost the same, but a little lighter 🙂

A light coat should combine the two effects. Flip flops are to a degree additive to the base. I've just invested in the whole chameleon range from Green Stuff World, Hoping I haven't made a mistake, but all the reviews and videos I've seen indicate I could do a lot of interesting effects with them over different bases.
28 May 2020, 18:31

Gonna check that Green Stuff out 🙂

I'm waiting for some Blue stuff from Green Stuff World.
I'm eager to make copies of some of my scratch work that I need replicated

Chaz Gordon
It's a dangerous site, I only went to get some paint and ended up finding wayyy too much, the blue stuff caught my attention, and some masking putty, and some resin molds, and some cool Metallica, and a cool tool for making ridged pipe work.

Sanded the body with 6k sand sponge and water, after that used 1 coat of the Oriental sun flip flop paint and looks great 🙂 Got the trailer done as well, now I need to cut plastic to turn it into a caravan.

Nice work Danny. Don't sweat the time things take, just the red stripes on my mini Thunderbird 4 took me over 2 hours. I look at time spent on a model perhaps a bit differently. As this is a leisure activity, rather than hours spent per kit, I think of it as cost per hour of leisure activity. When looked at that way, this is one of the cheapest hobbies out there for me. a £20 kit with in the region of £3 of paint & materials added just kept me occupied and engaged for 2 Months of evenings and weekends. That's about the same as my Netflix subscription.

Just imagine doing the decals on my Hatsune Racer... That was a nightmare in decals, took a couple full solid days to work through them. Project 048 -- Hatsune Miku BMW Z4 GT3 Super GT | Album by chrisagreat (1:24)

Almost done with the decals 🙂 on right side was weird to do 4 small decals first and then the big decal over it...messed up right-side door tribal decal 🙁 but luckily you don't see it very well 😛

Chris, that car must have been a decal nightmare lol..still came out very nice 🙂
Chaz, that's so true mate, loads of hours well spend 😛 Only the paint on this 1 was a bit much for such a small kit 😛 Think total of around € 35,-/40,- euro with primer, paint and clear 😄

That is so awesome, Danny! Top notch job! Clear coat that puppy before anyything happens!

Danny, I hear ya on the cost of paint in a can. Airbrushing may be a big outlay up front, but the costs per kit after are massively reduced. My Mossie and R2 used a whole can of Tamiya Fine primer between them, and 4 Tie fighters that I built used 3 500ml cans of automotive primer. It's the same with varnish, R2 consumed 2 cans of Tamiya Semi-Gloss, and the Mossie a can and a bit of Tamiya Matt. I get the automotive primer cheap in bulk, but The tamiya cans are £7 each. The trouble with spray cans is that most of the volume evaporates or goes on the paper around the thing you're painting

The Thunderbirds Pilots, Is the first kit I've done without any spray cans. The Primer is Vallejo Poly, think I used between 5 - 10ml (200ml = £11.99). The main colour is Vallejo Game Air, about 5ml used (17ml = £2.40) The five vehicles were about 1-2 ml each of various Vallejo colours. (all pre thinned too) Varnish was 10ml of Vallejo Satin (500ml = £11.99) and 10ml of Vallejo Gloss (500ml = £11.99) Only the varnishes needed thinning, which was done with De-ionised water £2 for a Litre bottle, probably consumed about 8ml so far.

The most expensive part of the airbrushing was cleaning the thing, I probably used around 50ml of airbrush cleaner (200ml = £7.99) and 30ml of Airbrush thinner (200ml = £9.99)

So while I spent more to get all of that than you did on the bus, I'm left with almost full bottles of everything, that I will use on the next kit and the next kit and so on.

Colour shift paints are available for airbrush at only a small increase on the cost of regular ones. the Green stuff Chameleons work out around £3 for 17ml, and Vallejo also do a small range at £4 for 17ml. from what i've seen, coverage per kit would be about the same as the regular paints, although I've also had to buy Vallejo Gloss Black primer as a base.

The trouble is, you have to repeat all the ancillary fluids if you use a different type of paint - Tamiya Acrylics need a different thinner, which is about the same price as Vallejo thinner, and 99.9% IPA for cleanup (which is double the price at the moment thanks to CV19), but they can be varnished with Vallejo, and can also go over Vallejo primer. The Alclad I've bought needs a whole other set of Primers, thinners, cleaners and varnish.

Whatever you do, initial outlay is going to be high, but once you're set up, airbrushes consume very little. Unless you are trying to paint something with Tamiya White, that stuff just doesn't cover, I keep a stock of at least 3 10ml bottles at all times in case I decide I want to paint something white.

Chaz, you're probably aware, but just in case... You can get a large can of Halfords plastic primer, in various colours, for around a tenner. I have used it in the past, and it's just as good as Tamiya, but you get nearly 3x the amount. Recently I have been working with Plasticote primer. A large can, was £8 from B&M bargains, no less! I find it a little grainy, but a quick sand with some 2000 wet and dry, sorts that out. They also have a gloss white, in the smaller can, that's the best rattle can white gloss, I've ever seen. Worth a punt buddy.

Thanks Bozzer, But I'm converted to Vallejo primers, so cheap. If I use cans, I've got a 12 pack of U-pol from ebay for £30. It doesn't like cold weather though, really have to shake the can for ages, and I tend to grab a couple of cans and keep them in the house for a couple of days if I'm going to use it. The colour is a perfect match for imperial Grey when I'm doing Tie Fighters and other imperial kits.

It has been a while since last time working on this 1. today did the last few decals on the van. the wheelhub decals are so damn small and really have to look close at it to see the black vw decals...
Now I can do the last 1 or 2 clear coats on it, but the humidity in my hobbyroom....pffff.... last week it was 30+ celcius and now the humidity is going thru the roof lol...
The gold parts look great on the body color if I may say so myself 😄
