I will be building a 90th FS from Elmendorf Alaska (AK).

separate decal sheet? So we have an AK, a MO and a SJ
21 October 2016, 13:38
Michael Phillips
Yes, I am using markings from an old Repli-Scale sheet.

nice painting in the cockpit...

Almost ready for primer... Got a little seam work and filling to do first... But not much. Fit on this kit is quite good.

Thanks James! That is cool Germen, I will have to check that out. Looks like we got 4 Strike Eagles in our little mini group build!

Got the primer coat on last night, hopefully tonight I will get the pre-shading done.

Germen V
aaah, mine is fully pre-shaded last night. now i got the feeling that my hand is waking up out of a local anesthesia, i had to pull out my old badger 150 because the nozzle on my Sparmax is cracked. Got a new one this morming so tonight i'll pass a few coats of Lifecolor UA516, what are you guys gonna use as basic grey shade?
27 October 2016, 13:10
Michael Phillips
Haha, I can see how that would cause some finger discomfort! I am using Gunze H305 for the Gunship Gray basecoat. I might darken it up a bit, because the Alaskan Strike Eagles I am modelling seems to have a fresh, dark finish.

yes the H305 is rather darker in color, so i'm using Lifecolor UA516 as the base and then i'll fill some panels with H305 & H331 and Vallego 71,053

Thanks Maciej! I'm moving right along now, pre-shading is done. Base coat tomorrow tomorrow and possibly future coat as well.

I had a day off of work today so I got the base coat applied this afternoon. I like the color of the Gunze Gunship gray... A lil dark. Looking at the pics I think I will give it another light coat on the wings to tone down the pre-shading a bit more.

Looking good mate! Never knew the revell Eagle had recessed panel lines. Great progress, like your pre shading technique.

Germen V
nice, it looks like you're staying on my six, but i got 2 question :
Did you also got the nasty raised lettering on one off the elevators saying Revell ©2005?
Are you gonna trim the underside off the seats, it seams that the sit way too high?
28 October 2016, 18:42
Michael Phillips
Thanks Erik! Yeah, the Revell F-15E is a modern tooling, but not to be confused with the Revell/Monogram F-15C, which is an older tooling and has raised panel lines iirc.
28 October 2016, 18:54
Michael Phillips
Thanks Germen! I am trying to keep up with you! Yes, I had the raised lettering. I just sanded it off, was pretty quick to remove. I plan on using Quickboost seats, but they still have not arrived from the UK. Sigh. Anyway, I did not even assemble the kit seats, but I may have to if the QB seats are lost in the mail (it has been a little more than a month).

Germen V
ok, i had QB and Aires seats around, but whhem i assembled the ones from the kit i found that they were allright so i'm keeping them, although i'm gonna check the height with the QB's

Got the decals on. No real issues there, just a lot of stencils. Used the kit stencils, they are actually quite nice. Next up is painting the metal surfaces, which is one of my favorite things to do!

you're in front, mine is still drying and i will start the decals Thursday because for the moment i have other fish to fry. From Thursday i'm off for 4 days, so i go to my mom at the belgian coast, and there is not really an opportunity for spraying paint. So i will prepaint the Revell Sea King parts already.

i see you have painted the nose cone lighter, i saw that on a lot of pictures but decided not to do it, also i saw some pics were the leading edge o the tailplanes was slightly lighter
30 October 2016, 18:49
Michael Phillips
Ah, just a little delay, you will be back at it soon enough!

As for the nosecone, there really is no wrong way to do it. I have seen them darker, the same color, and lighter. This is how I understand it:
The nosecone is made of a different material than the rest of the aircraft, and it tends to fade faster than the rest of the jet. It is not repainted, only replaced with a new one. So it depends on when the nosecone was last replaced relative to the last airframe repaint that dictates how different the two will be from each other.

Indeed the nose cone is one of the most vunerable parts for wear, i count that the pointness also is a huge factor ifor this. I see this in my job, the nosecones of the Avro RJ's have to be refurbished 75% faster than the ones of the Airbus A32F. Maybe i'll do in the post shading, lightening it up towards the front.

Got the base metallic painted this evening. Tomorrow I will add heat stress and weathering to these areas.

Engine area heat stressing done. Might go back in and tone down the gold effect a lil. Still have to weather a lil and put a wash on the insides of the burner cans.

it is looking really good.

Nice work... can you explain a bit how you did the heatstressing on the engines?

Looking really good.👍

I definitely add my positive comments on the nozzles and jet burner and also interested to know if you can share with us how you did it.

Thanks Spanjaard, Harry, Holger, Bart, Melf, and Michael! After looking at the pics some more, I really think I am going to go back in and dial back the gold tint of the heat stressed metalwork. In person it doesn't seem as overpowering as it does in the pics.

Bart and Melf, I used Alclad paints and Tamiya Smoke on this. First, I painted all of the metal areas and nozzles with Alclad Gloss Black Primer. I then followed with Alclad Airframe Aluminum to all surfaces. For the nozzles, I then added some hot metal blue to certain areas (this effect seems to have been overpowered though). I then took some Tamiya Smoke and darkened some areas a bit, and left some still quite bright. I then went in with Alclad Jet Exhaust and darkened some areas of the nozzle even more. Finally, I went back in with some Alclad Airframe Aluminum again to highlight some areas and to lighten others I felt I had gone too dark on.

For the fuselage metalwork, after I laid the Airframe Aluminum, I went in with some Alclad Pale Burnt Metal (which has a very goldish hue) and hit the panel lines and around the edges. I also painted the "ring" around the back part of the nozzles this color, on top of the base of Airframe Aluminum. Then, I went in with some Tamiya Smoke to slightly darken areas around where I had just painted the Pale Burnt Metal.

It's really all just kinda artistic license with how I did things. I do think that the gold tint of the Pale Burnt Metal is a bit too dark for the look I was going for, so I will just go back in tonight with some Airframe Aluminum to blend it back in. The Gold "ring" of the nozzle I will leave as is.
