Album info

Z-37A Čmelák, letoun zvláštního určení Svazu požární ochrany, letiště Přibyslav, 1983

design by Design Studio u Ptáka a Kocoura, printing by APC Decals

In the 1980s, in the summer months, forest fires began to occur in the vicinity of Přibyslav and Žďár nad Sázavou. These were caused by the very warm summer and were mainly helped by a local arsonist. One Z-37A Bumblebee aircraft was allocated for the quick liquidation of these fires and was stationed at the airfield in Přibyslav. For its purpose it was painted with the standard camouflage of the Fire Protection Association and assigned to the Fire Protection Association of Pribyslav. The impersonation remained the original OK-SPO. Along with this Bumblebee, a Spitfire Mk XVI was also flown to Priibyslav airfield and used to make the first quick intervention and accurately locate the fire. Because of its considerable speed it could turn more times than the slower Bumblebee. For firefighting, the Spitfire had a specially modified under-fuselage tank which did not dump but discharged extinguishing fluid. The operation of these aircraft in firefighting was very effective and efficient. Both stands can still be seen at Pribyslav airfield today, but they are nowadays only presented at air days, where they show the dropping of water on a target. How a Spitfire Mk. 16 with a bubble got to the airfield and could act as a Fire Fighting Aircraft is still a great mystery.
