What can I say? It crashed for real. Painting went wrong several times. Closing the wheel wells was a pain. Decals were partially wrong, so some came out of leftovers. But as it has fought so hard to come alive and the kids liked it so much - it just had to survive. The base is made from oak and donated by a friend of mine, a carpenter who provides me with wooden debris. No show model at all but from a distance... 🙂

You did well to keep it! I am planning to do the same paint scheme but with the Hasegawa kit. Which decals were not good? You mean the NASA set?

Thanks mates! I used a set from Xtradecal (X72315) which included yellow decals for the golden stripes. Once applied, they didn't look bad at all. Despite the use of decal setting solution and two layers of varnish they didn't survive masking with Tamiya tape. Revell's safety markings from the German Starfighter were useless, so I had to cut some Hasegawa ones and puzzled them together. Otherwise the decals were great. I remember having seen a whole decal set with Nasa Starfighters. Maybe this has appropriate stencils included?

What was so difficult about closing the Revell gear doors? I might want to do a Dutch grey F-104G in flight. Should I stick to the Revell one or better opt for the Hasegawa one?

Thanks mates for your encouraging words! 🙂
@Patrick: Yes, that's the sheet. Looks great and has even appropriate stencils. Talking about the gear doors, I'm not sure, if it was my fault. Maybe some UHUTac or something underneath will make it easier to align them. As I have the Hasegawa Starfighter in my stash, too, I recommed this one over the Revell issue. It's a little more refined and especially the nose looks much better. But Revell's isn't bad at all, especially the cockpit. Good luck!

Thanks Mirko! Before deciding on which kit to build, I'll see if I can find a Hasegawa one for comparison. 👍

Yes, Mirko, good on you for persevering! This Starfighter will look great in your display cabinet and so different from the usual subjects. 👏👏
