I've started to work on the Tamiya F-16C. So far it's an amazing kit, fit is really great! I'm still thinking about doing some kind of an "inflight diaorama", that's why I started with the pilot to see if I get that into an acceptable state, and I'm so happy with the result! Any ideas how to accomplish an inflight scene? Are there any good looking model stands available? Or any tips on how to do it myself?

i might end up with a small step where the two top half of the fuselages meet. if i could do it again i would rather join the two top parts first and then glue it to the bottom part...

Cool! Dude looks great, he's from the Box? &does his hand fit with the canopy?

For inflight poses I normally use brass tubes ~3mm as they are sturdy but still bendable, you can also solder stuff to them. I rough up the glueing surfaces and use super glue or hot glue, normally to wooden bases. In the plane I glue a thick plastic support and then drill a hole through that for the tube.
On my inflight viper though I attached a bicycle spoke through the centerline fuel tank and glued the whole finished plane on top later - with a very good surface joint o.c. (looks like this: TOPGUN 04 climbing | Album by halohead (1:48) ) Also already survived one move to a new house ;)
So you can get really creative with stands :)

@ Daniel: Yes, the pilot figure is from the box and good point with the canopy. It actually also came to my mind lately, haven't checked so far...

Looks fine overall. I can see the panel line by the fin fading out. A little re-scribe might have done the trick but it will be fine from the front and not that noticeable from the back either. I'd call it a win.

it's finished! painting that smoke outlet on top of the left wing scared me almost to death... very subtle weathering on the bottom, besides that i leave it clean. hope you like it!

Even though the two underbody missiles are still missing, I call it finished. I'm quite happy with the result. What I really like is the subtle weathering, a combination of the florymodels wash and a bit of enamel washes and oils on top of it. Also the "experiments" with the metal engine parts ended acceptable. Where I have to improve next time are the clear parts, the canopy looks terrible close up... As I already mentioned, the kit is very easy to build and the fit is great. Unfortunately the parts (and also the manual) are not completely correct in regards of a J-16 and also the "low-vis" decals are not completely "low-vis". Hope you like it too!

iI definitely do like it! An all-grey modern plane can be quite a dull affair, particularly a PLAF-one + the Flanker is quite a bit of a canvas... You managed to keep it interesting without going outside of the "fully believable" envelope - light paneling and smaller contrasts doing the job - nice!

Slavo Hazucha
It surely does, but you are not seriously leaving this at the 2 last pics..? :)

How would you rate the HB-experience? I think their Flankers are really a good base to work with, both the fit and the surface detailing seem to provide a really nice starting position for either an easy-going OOB or time & room to focus on whatever you want to do, not what the kit forces you to do...
6. July, 20:24
Schnemat
of course not! :) I will for sure add some "Rollout" pictures later this week.

I agree with you, this is actually quite a nice kit. I was a bit hesitant to do again a HB kit after I built the Rafale B from HB a while ago, which i didn't like that much (it might also be me, as my skills have improved since then). There are no real fit issue here and where it doesn't fit 100% it's more the lack of skills on my side than a problem with the kit. While studying the availabe J-16 pictures I found some differences between the real aircraft and the kit which are not mentioned (J-16 has no antennas around the cockpit area, also the air intake looks different, etc.). So if you really want to do a "full scale" J-16 you would have to be a bit cautious and do some research.

That looks fantastic Schnemat! I really dig that lo-viz scheme and really look forward to seeing the final pics when you post them. Well done!

Includes "only" the baron spirit" decals. Sadly that's the way Revell goes with these "Special markings". Don't get me wrong: I like that super colored markings but i (and maybe others) also like a grey one :D

The cockpit looks great inside, very nice progress overall - My attempts to force anything Vallejo through the airbrush in a meaningful manner were mostly failures, too thick, too thin, inconsistent... I went for lacquer based MRP´s, but it must be possible with Vallejo colors to achieve decent performance too...
10. December 2019, 09:58
Schnemat
went on with a different plan, i recovered the model with the vallejo satin varnish and put the florymodel dirt wash on top. started then to remove the wash on the wings and was super happy, it looks great. unfortunately in some areas, where i probably didn't cover the previous varnish enough it still removes it... let's see, maybe i can cover it up with some additional weathering.
10. December 2019, 12:06
Schnemat
thank you Slavo, i feel honored that you comment on my build, my skills are nothing compared to yours (followed your f-111 build ;)) i think i start to get better results with the vallejo paint (need to post some pictures on my rafale build, there i do not have any rough textures so far). for paint i use now 3 drops of flow improver, to drops of thinner every 10 drops of paint. with roughly 18-20 psi i get now good results (with an evo 0.4 or 0.2 needle). for varnish i use 10 drops thinner and 2 drops flow improver every 10 drops of varnish. maybe that helps somebody, but as usual everybody has its own preferences and working style. as i do my hobby in a "living room" where sometimes also the children play i do not want to use sth too smelly ;) but yes, i've read good things about the mrp's
12. December 2019, 09:19
Schnemat
allright, weathering cleanup done. with all the troubles i think i achieved a good result... i will probably skip certain parts on the bottom from further weathering, i do not want to spoil it. will put the weapons on over the weekend and hopefully complete it!
12. December 2019, 09:23
Slavo Hazucha
Thanks Schneemat, no need to talk humbly about your skills - doing a great job here & on other project - I am happy to follow another talented 4-th gen fan! ;)

As for colors, I really struck my heavenly match with MRP´s (I am no sales agent, they just work that well for me...) - pre-thinned, lo-pressure absolutely controllable goodness, thinnest ever layer on the model, but somehow great coverage even in light tones and completely solid vs oils & oil solvents, which are my favorite weathering & post-process media... The smell is there during work, but if you can open windows for 5min it´s all gone and nowhere as persistent as in Humbrol times. The model is smell-free after 5mins too. Got 2 kids and my bench is in an open corridor where the family moves a lot & they have not once even discovered I was airbrushing after said 5mins :)

I tried Vallejo, Gunze, Tamyia, Revell(!) and MiG... MRP came out best for me, with exception of Alclads on larger metal areas (tests only, no NMF build done yet...).

Not saying you cannot get to your comfort zone with Vallejos! Just my personal preferences...
12. December 2019, 10:04
Schnemat
exactly, it's all about what works best for each individual. and thanks for sharing your experience with mrp's, i'll probably give it a go. i started with revell aquas (what a mess) as they have been in the starter kit of the gripen 1:72 (which was my 1st model returning to the hobby) and then switched to vallejo, because my local hobby store has them in stock. let me see if i can someone distributing mrp's in switzerland...
