AREA 88: "Rocky's Arrival" (DC-03)

Album image #1
First things first... drill out the windows.

Album image #2
Windows and door opened up. Time for a dry fit.

Album image #3
Interior painted black to add depth and the windows glued in place with white glue.

Album image #4
Fuselage all glued together. As always, some seams showing.

Album image #5
Still a few gaps at the seams, so it looks like it's back to the sanding board.

Album image #6
Hmm... the bottom still needs work too.

Album image #7
After lots of putty, sanding, repeating, painting and then polishing... we have a shiny plane!

Album image #8
Engines painted and washed.

Album image #9
Engines installed and first coat of future applied... and hairspray!

Album image #10
Green paint on... doesn’t look too bad from this angle...

Album image #11
Hmmm... we may have a masking problem... or three...

Album image #12
Whoah! Now that’s a face even a mother couldn’t love... at least not with corrective surgery!

Album image #13
Started chipping away at the hairspray layer... maybe too much.

Album image #14
Urm... perhaps a bit too much?

Album image #15
Crafting up some new “in flight” propellers.

Album image #16
At least the underside turned out the way I’d hoped...

Album image #17
Hmm... not quite happy with the propellers.. still need work.

Album image #18
Well, it’s starting to look like something.

Album image #19
I had an idea to use glue for the windows, but I want them to dry convex so it needs to dry upside down.

No more Tintin? 🙁

Oh, don't worry Martin. Tintin projects are not forgotten. I've got at least 5 waiting for me right now. I just wanted to spread the love around a bit and clear some of the 1/144 scale planes off my shelf of doom. How did I do it? By getting inspired, buying more 1/144 kits... and leaving the half started ones to stare on in disbelief from their place on the shelf...😉

I really wish I hadn't cut open the door, but that's what I get for changing my mind after starting a project I guess.

Lot's of putty, sanding, repeating, painting, sanding, repeating, painting, polishing... but now we have a shiny DC-3!

Mighty fine in that midget scale. Great work!

And it was going so well too... Well, that all changed after I pulled the masks off the windscreen. I knew it was going to be sketchy after all the wiggling around it did. Oh well, nothing a little corrective surgery can't make worse, right?

Ever get that feeling like things are sliding downhill and there's nothing you can do but watch? After remasking, repainting, and remasking, repainting the windscreen is not noticeably better. So that was worth it. Having more or less given up on making it presentable, I started chipping away at the hairspray layer to remove some of the green paint. I may be taking too much off in too small an area... but I can't seem to stop myself.

And this project was going to well, too... sigh.

Oh well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I went for the gusto and gave this build the "tired old warhorse" look. I may make it out of this one alive after all.

Hey Greg, the beat up look, looks nice

Don't beat yourself up over the beat up look. It beats a lot of the kits i look at.
I'm sure you'll recover from all the flaws you see and we don't 👍

Suddenly I have the urge to listen to Michael Jackson music... "Just Beat it, beat it, beat it.... ba bum bum"... 🙂

Thanks guys! It's strange how these projects sometimes have ups and downs. But you never really know the end result until, well, the end.😉

Leave the jokes to us Greg.

Well, I'm pretty sure that's where Martin was headed...

Beats me, what did I do this time? 😄
I really like your ups and downs, it means I'm not the only one with those

Greg, I rather like it! Yes, its WAY worn, but it seems like it fits the the subject.

The ups and downs are why we have mates to share them with...

Thanks Donald. It does fit the subject...so I'm content... but that doesn't mean I can't get a great idea and try this one again with the Roden kit next time... right?😉
13 August 2018, 15:20
Donald Dickson II
LOL Go for it dude! Step up in size and get the Monogram/Revell 1/48 kit and have fun with that.😉

Well I went out and got the 1/144 Roden kit... so I'm going to try this build again, but I still have a plan for a 1/72 B-1. 1/48 might blow my mind.

In the meantime, I figured I'd better finish this one off - especially since I wanted to test my process to make windows. I found a great clear-drying glue, so I glued some clear film on the inside earlier and am now filling the window "cups" with drops of glue. I want them convex, so it's drying on it's side. I hope this works. Everything else is done.

i am really curious about those windows 🙂
