EWR VJ 101C, A&A Models 1:72

The most interesting feature of this aircraft should be the swiveling engine nacelles at the wing ends, which are realized here for the first time. 

The 6 engines were of the Rolls-Royce RB 145 type with a static thrust of 1,245 kp. With the X2, the thrust output with afterburning was increased to 1,615 kp. 

In March 1963 the first roll tests took place and on April 10th, 1963 the X1 carried out free hovering for the first time, long before the first aerodynamic flights. These then took place in August. 

On October 8, 1963, the first transition cycle took place, with a vertical take-off, transition to aerodynamic flight and a return to hover with vertical landing. 

Testing of the X1 continued in 1964. Until the 1964 aviation trade fair in Hanover, the aircraft performed 40 aerodynamic flights, 24 hover flights and 14 complete transitional flights. 

After that, she was the first VTOL aircraft to cross the sound barrier for the first time. On September 14th of the same year, it was lost in a conventional start. Test pilot George Bright was able to save himself with the ejection seat. 

The testing program was very successful. There is no general explanation for why the VJ101C did not go into series production.
