Hi Christian. I wish you the best on building biplanes in the scale. I have two in the box at 1/72 and can't imagine starting them. Nice start on an interesting build and will follow to see the finished product.

Hi Alan, it is the first biplane since mmmhh, more than 30 years🙂 and therefore I'm curious about the final result. So far it went well, and now I'm looking forward how the PE struts work. I will post some more photos soon. Cheers, Christian

Marvellous little kits and the photoetch is especially useful. Rigging is a little more challenging than with your larger scales, but is definitely do-able.

Well, I thought it was easier to build this tiny little bir🙂 Today's progress on both Ni-17. All the seam lines along the wing root are filled and sanded. Landing gear struts and wheels attached. I replaced the plastic middle strut by a 0,5mm brass rod. And all except the aft upper wing struts are fixed too. I'm happy with my today's progress. I will check the alignment of the struts tomorrow. Cheers, Christian

Sorry Christian...I've had some trouble from Guests who then troll other Forums with my works and general slanderings. I've now hopefully fixed this, but it means that people have to register themselves, in order to see my modelling. C'est la vie and all that.

Loving your Nieuport and the novelty giant coin does not fool me!😎 😛

No problem Bruce. Damn you noticed my trick with the coin😢

Hi Mike, long time no see. Thx for your kind comment. Yep, they're nice and easy to build. Just think about the rigging of these tiny birds. I think I will use the new RIG THAT THING: modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=9642
By the way, an RAF SE5a and a Sopwith Pup are in progress as well. Cheers, Christian

Must post some photos of my SE5a which was a Sram kit, I think they are very similar to Valom but resin - and more expensive! I used sprue to rig, but it is very fragile for aircraft, I will be interested to see how it goes for you.
28 April 2014, 18:36
Christian Bruer
Yep would be fine to see your SE 5a. I have some Sram kits too, theire really fragile and tiny. I will let you know about the rig🙂

Today I start painting the Ni-17. I used Vallejo Model Air Light Grey as primer before I add the basic color Vallejo Color Aluminum. The rudders are air brushed in white and then hand painted in blue and red. I mixed both colors using Vallejo Colors to match the color of the decals. I'm quite satisfied with the result and hope to go on tomorrow.
Cheers, Christian

Cowling and metal plating along the cockpit are painted in a darker color. I mixed Vallejo steel gun metal. Wheels are painted blue grey. The rudders are now in place on both planes and I paint the struts earth brown on the one will be in a semi silver paint scheme. The second Nieuport will get a camo scheme on top of the wings. This will be the next step soon. Cheers, Christian

Christian Bruer
Hey Mike, Andre and Martyn, thx for your interest and very kind comments. Not finished but I hope to go back to it soon. The Guynemer plane got it's green camouflage and still wait for the brown. I will post new photos till I finish the paint work. Cheers, Christian

Christian Bruer
Paint work is done so far. I add a black stripe along the aft fuselage of Soubiran's Nieuport and paint the brown on Guynemer's Nieuport. Both planes got a coat of future to seal the surface and make it smooth for the decals. Some more progress soon.
Cheers, Christian

Genau Jens. Meine 1:48 Fokker E I war für mich schon eine wahnsinn ( verspannung). 1:144 sollte für mich ein terror sein. Great Job Christian.

Looks soooooooooo good.. neat weathering will be good on this one😉
12 August 2014, 18:31
Christian Bruer
Many thx for all your kind commemsts. Try to use Rigg that Thing, went quite well on my HMS Montgomery. Edgars a subtle weathering will follow the decals and a sealing coat of semi gloss varnish.

Bartłomiej Ślusarczyk
Beautifull work! It's great that Valom gives possibility to make nice WWI airplanes models in 1:144. I'm curious if you use masking for camouflage or paint it by hand? I'm asking because I've had problems with masking painting my Hawker Tempest in 1:144.
12 August 2014, 20:12
Mike McCabe
Very nice Christian, great to see Valom doing these. I used sprue on my SE5 but it does tend to come loose, it will be interesting to see how good Rig this Thing works.
12 August 2014, 21:44
Mike McCabe
Bartłomiej Ślusarczyk - I don't know if Christian will agree but I find Blu Tack is very good for camo patterns in this scale, much easier than trying to cut accurate paper templates.
12 August 2014, 21:45
Alan Rush
Looking even better Christian! 👍
12 August 2014, 23:38
Christian Bruer
Thank you all for your kind comments! @Mike, Bartłomiej, I agree to Blu Tack, but in this case a I used self made masks made from Tamiya masking tape. It went quite well for me. After a coat of Future I add the decals on one of the Biplanes.
The decals are a little bit intractable. It needs a lot of softener to make them soft to let them fit smooth to the surface. Annoying I ruined one of the two no. 8 to be placed on the fuselage side;-( Strange it seems the Future did not dry out completely over night so I left the upper wing cockades for today, as well as the second Nieuport to give it a next try tomorrow.
Cheers, Christian

Bartłomiej Ślusarczyk
Thanks for advices regarding masking. I think that Your tiny Nieuports will look great on simple diorama. Are You planning something like this?
13 August 2014, 11:55
Christian Bruer
I let the Future dry for a few more hours and start decaling Guynemer's Nieuport. It worked much better now. Anyhow the decals are nice but intractable and not easy to cling to the surface!

@Bartłomiej, yep I plan to add the biplanes each to a small wooden base. I will use Fimo to portray the surface and a few pieces of flat styrene to simulate a wooden planking and maybe a figure. Stay tuned!

Cheers, Christian

Guynemer's Nieuport is nearly finished. A slightly weathering / wash with oil colors was followed by a subtle fading on the wings. Because the structure on the plastic parts is not really sharp it wasn't easy not to overdo the fading, but from my point of view it is quite nice for the viewer. A base made of Fimo is just in progress as well as the second Nieuport.
Cheers, Christian

Edgars Bizūns
That is a lovely model! I will actually try to get some of these Valom kits, they look good 🙂
Did you tried some rigging on this one?
13 September 2014, 07:39
Christian Bruer
Thx Edgars, yep I will try a rig but first I will finish the second Nieuport.
13 September 2014, 10:08
Edgars Bizūns
The metal one?
13 September 2014, 10:09
Christian Bruer
yep, the bird still need a wash and some fading and weathering effects.
13 September 2014, 10:35
Edgars Bizūns

Thx Marc!

Christian Bruer
Now both Nieuport are finished except the rig and one base. Just wondering when I start the washing and weathering on the aluminum colored Nieuport, the color with a second clear coat of Future was still clammy. The Vallejo aluminum I used need longer to dry but 3 ½ month to harden seems to be to long! Anyhow washing and weathering went out quite well and I'm mentally preparing myself for the work on the rig😉
14 September 2014, 12:57
Edgars Bizūns
That is sick! I love it! And that tiny MG looks so cool 😄
14 September 2014, 13:43
Christian Bruer
Thx Edgars. I nearly finished the second base. Hope to finish the rest soon.
15 September 2014, 16:34
Christian Bruer
Just finished. Rigging was done with stretched sprue. I stretched some more and cut out several straight sprues with a more or less equal thickness. Once sorted I cut them in size and put them in place carefully. The planes are fragile and you have them to handle with kid gloves. I'm happy they're fixed on the base.
Cheers, Christian

Hey there, your very kind comments are a likely finish for this interesting project. It was the first time since more than 40 years ago that I build a biplane and the first time in that tiny scale. Glad you like it!

These small scale aircraft are fantastic. I like this one as my father has a real propeller from a Nieuport.

Christian Bruer
Thx Roberto and Guido. Yep I really like these tiny birds too. Valom release more and more. New SpadXIII, Hanriot HD.1 and soon a Fokker E.III. Actually I have their Sopwith Pub in progress🙂
16 September 2015, 18:47
Mike McCabe
I have the Hanriot and Spad, both very good but the Spad looks like a big improvement in quality for the wing ribs. Great marking sets for both aircraft. They will do a Nieuport 11, Sopwith Camel, Pfalz DIII and Bristol Fighter as well.
19 September 2015, 20:33
Christian Bruer
Wow, interesting news, they're all a must have🙂 The Bristol is an F.2B?
20 September 2015, 09:44
Edgars Bizūns
Hmmm, if that Bristol will be the F.2B.. I must have it!
20 September 2015, 11:23

It is an F2B

Great news! Just curious how they will design the installation of the lower wing!

Album info

Valom's 2 in 1 Nieuport Ni-17, build out of box as N1530 flown by Georges Guynemer and N1977 flown by R. Soubiran.
The kit contain plastic parts, PE parts and a resin Le Rhòne motor. The quality is quite ok, but some filling and sanding is necessary at the wing root. There are four marking options so you'll have the choice. I start this an in between build – I hope so😉
