Meng - Whippet Mk A - Paint
All done...
Wooden Track Spuds... I suck at wood... But was a combination of wooden acrylics then a thickish oil filter with Abt 502 oil... Metal ends were hit with Tamiya XF63 then neutral grey as highlights to the edges... VMS enamel binder with No.12 black pigment washed over and polished up...
Exhaust was several layers of progressively lighter grey acrylics.. Then a thick filter of Abt 502 rust coloured oils... A general wash of Mig Light Rust Wash with pigments mixed in was then applied... Sepia pin wash to the ties then Smoke residue on the tips...
The number of times I broke the rear gun off and reglued it... Lol
Weathering carried out with oils and Mig Heavy Mud range
Trying out different settings on my phone photographing...
Real dirt bonded with VMS Ballast freeze to mud chutes
Insignia was Tamiya white over chipping fluid... Then chipped... More chipping fluid was applied ober the white and then masked for the red... Red sprayed and chipped again...
Broke the rear gun..! Doh..!!
High use areas got some additional oil colour of Basic Earth to its edges to give more definition to these large panels
Worn edges and chipping... Vajello Dark Rust sponged on with various shades of browns blended over
Oil Rendering, chipping and earthen tones..Olive green and greys used to add richness and volumes to regions on each panel...
Pin washing with Mig Dark Wash for green vehicles... Eventually I reapplied a Sepia oil wash as the contrast wasn't as striking initially
Semi gloss coat then filters applied to select panels...
Probably best that it should've been a matt coat as the semi wasn't absorbing the filters the way I had hoped...

Selective oil filters appiled to pick out individual panels
Decals on...
Highlighting bolt and rivet detail complete... Coat of satin gloss over the top in preparation of westgering and oils
Highlighting, although fairly time consuming, makes a big difference...
I can't help feel like this is a photo advertisement for Vajello and VMS... Lol
Highlighting all the bolts and rivet detail with Vajello Deck Tan and Green Grey mixed in a ratio of 3:1..
Some of the final highlight was too much so went in and tried some corrections to knock it back a bit...
Adding Buff to German grey I randomly sprayed individual track links... More buff was added to the mix and sprayed other links... I continued with adding Deck Tan and finally white to produce variations in tone to the tracks base colour...
Tracks were given a coat of primer and base coated with German Grey...
Second layer of Modulation with IJN Grey...
Modulation with H70 to stress out the angular shapes of the Whippet...
Previous layer of preshading left visible...
2nd layer of Preshading with Field Grey mixed with gloss clear...
1st layer of Preshading complete
Preshading with XF61 Dark green around all internal and external corners...
Primed and ready for colour
Everything primed with Gunze Black Finishing Surface Primer1500...
Pretty much the colour scheme I'll be using...

Cheers Ben... Pushing the contrast to the extreme... The plan is to offset the starkness with some filters of different colours to each of the panels to enhanceme the shape further... Bit of an experiment but we'll see how it goes...!

I feel like I never have enough contrast, at some point I turn it down and then later I regret not going for more.

Sane here mate... It's one thing to look at your work under bright lights but when viewed unde natural light you really do lose a lot if your work... Figure dialing things up to 11 should help... Honestly have a crack at going from one extreme to the other on a mule... It's quite impressive how far you can push things I'm learning...

Thanks guys... Top build this one... Learnt heaps and had a blast as it came thru the pipeline...! What a great kit - cheap, high quality, low part count and loads of weathering options...

I always am afraid to go too extreme and pull back on the shading and weathering. Looks like you overcame your reservations and the result is strikingly realistic.

Ben M... Mate I went 11 on the modulation but with filters and oil rendering it really popped and was easily controlled to bring the richness back into the colour... Was definitely an experiment in how far I could push things... Cheers...
