Mig 29 dual build Polish Air Force

Album image #1
One each single and twin seat. I had the Caracal decals before I got the A kit. Was trying to buy the original issue but had to stump up for a new boxing with the Polish Air Force decals. Inspired by the display I saw at RIAT 2015. Cockpits and upper fuse parts prepped.

Album image #2
Pits installed. Hard to photograph. Apart from the Caracal decals both kits will be oob.

Album image #3
Yup, side-by-side build.

Single.

Album image #7
Twin.

Album image #8
Nose weight added, just in case!

Album image #9
And after a couple of hours we'll spent, this is where we are. Nice simple modelling again.

Album image #10
Ok, forgot to photo the filling/sanding but there but wasn't much. Used some perfect plastic putty on the lower fin/fuselage joints, smoothed with damp cloth. Had to sand the nose area top/bottom joint alright and the lower intake/engine area. Tried Tamiya lacquer paint for the base grey, dark/light ghost grey. I'm impressed with this paint the more I use it. Gives a lovely smooth finish.

As per the Caracal instructions I copied the plans at 133% to get 1/72. I placed tape over the printouts and traced the patterns on the tape removed and cut it out on the cutting mat. (This took a while, but considerably less time than it took to set the computer to print at 133%) 🙁

Album image #12
Looking close. The gunship grey is Humbrol 125. I now think the tamiya ghost grey is very blue. Hmmmm.

Album image #13
Ub. Hmmm.. do I need to go over it again?

Album image #14
And some of the tape used. I haven't used this technique before.

Album image #15
Ok, went over with some very thinned dark ghost grey to try and soften the edges somewhat. Probably a bit too soft now.

Album image #16
Ah well. Might not be accurate but looks better

Album image #17
I also did some light weathering with very thinned enamel black wiped off with white spirit. Doesn't affect the lacquer paint. Hard to see here...

Album image #18
Really impressed with these portraits and love how they look (on both the real aircraft and the models.

Album image #19
Both models got a clear coat of tamiya LP 9 prior to decals. Was still really a satin rather than gloss though.

Album image #20
I used Mr Mark Setter and Softener on the Caracal decals. Still got some silvering on some and others were perfect. The big badge decals are in 3 parts each and needed multiple applications of softener.

Album image #21
Especially on the base of the spine as per dead centre of this photo.

Album image #22
Single seater. Caracal insignia here. Used the Italeri insignia on the UB. It's a bit bigger than the Caracal ones but figured the more colourful badge would draw the eye here. As per previous experience, I used Johnson's Klear as decal setting agent for all Italeri decals.

Album image #23
Pleased with this.

Album image #24
Album image #25
Only damage, tried to rub down too soon and too hard after Mr Mark Setter applied.

Album image #26
It's a pity the Tamiya LP dark ghost grey is nowhere near the decals. Oh well...

Album image #27
Engine cans. Different on both kits?

Album image #28
Calling these finished. All final details added, only missiles left to add, still not sure if I'll bother.

Album image #29
This is not the actual plane I saw at RIAT 2015 but is inspired by it. So no underwing stores.

Album image #30
Rather pleased with how they've turned out.

Album image #31

Album image #32

Album image #33
Pity the Tamiya LP dark ghost grey doesn't come close to the decals.

Album image #34
And the twin stick. I only decided to build this as it was on the Caracal sheet I got for the single seater.

Album image #35
I already did a kit over 20 years ago, brush painted and some old Blue Rider decals for Serbian AF. Much prefer this scheme.

Album image #36
Album image #37
Can't do much more about the poor fit of the canopy.

Album image #38
Colourful at least.

Album image #39

Album image #40
Both together.

Album image #41
I don't know if I will add the stores. For me a kit is finished if it looks like it's ready to fly. So these will do for now.

Album image #42
And with the old kit.

Album image #43
Interesting how my skills have improved. I've no date for the old one but it was before I had an airbrush so late 90s I'd say.
Thanks everyone for looking and encouraging along the way.

Album image #44
And both on public display as of next Saturday.

Ok, small update, photos to follow tomorrow. Clear coat added and decalling started. I've come up against 2 issues with the Caracal decals. 1, there is only 4 national insignia squares for a decal sheet with 3 options. According to Caracal none of the 3 have insignia on the upper wings. Granted there is a photo on the website showing this but I've a feeling it's a plane not finished painting as I've seen plenty of photos of the two I'm building (111 & 15) with all 6 insignia. Also, the camouflage guide for the UB does not match any photos I can find of 15.

That's because the Polish Air Force insignias were not applied on the upper surfaces of the wings before 2013, Roy. So, I suppose the decal sheet was developed before this year, and all the photos you've found are newer. BTW, in the late 1990ties there was a decision to "turn" the Polish "checkerboard" by 90 degrees... You can compare these on the photos of Polish MiG-21's and MiG-29's...

Ah OK thanks Robert, the Caracal decals are from 2010 I think. I put all 6 from the Italeri sheet on the UB and the 4 Caracal ones on the single seater, upper wings and tail. Grrrr....

I think I haven't seen it earlier. Built same single seater, but from Trumpy. Had the same problem with the Caracal grey.
Your couple is looking grand mate 👍 (not only because of the roundels 😛 )
