1/72 Cyber Hobby Royal Navy Dehavilland Sea Vixen

Album image #1
First job, the cockpit.

Album image #2
The original ejection seats in this kit are approximately half size.

Album image #3
So I replaced them with 2 Canberra Ejection Seats instead.
They were found at the 2019 Telford Scale Model World Kit Swap for £1 each!

Album image #4
They fit when the canopy is on too which is nice.

Album image #5
Under and around the cockpit was airbrushed black.

Album image #6
I've installed all the internals ready for the big closeup.

Album image #7
All closed up, the Nosecone is only dry fitted.

Album image #8
I'm building this one alongside my wife's Revell boxing.

Album image #9
At the time this was the current situation on the bench, its much worse now!

Album image #10
After a few months on the shelf of doom I restarted.
I discovered a rather large seem down each side of the nose section.
That's now sorted.

Album image #11
After months of being stuck on the shelf of doom for absolutely no reason and no fault to the kit what so ever, I finally masked off the white ready for the top side grey scheme!

Album image #12
Scheme painted, I now have the wheels to paint.

Album image #13
And touch ups.

Album image #14
Whilst nursing home a poorly airbrush, I managed to sprey the wings.

Album image #15
Dry fitting the wings and Nosecone.
One word, WOW!!!!!!

Album image #16
This shot shows all the small parts and sprues have been primed White.

Album image #17
Work is steadily progressing with the gear legs and airbrake fins now in place permanently and the flaps, airbrake, Wheels and nose all dry fitted.

Album image #18
Paintwork patched up and klear coat applied.

Album image #19
Finally I've added what I think to be one of the most distinctive aspects of the Sea Vixen.

Album image #20
Another Red square I missed around what will be the Ram Air Turbine and I've dry fitted the rudders

Album image #21
I've now applied a layer of Klear Coat over the decals and I have painted the rudder surfaces.

Album image #22
Another 23 decals on, all belly stencils.

Album image #23
Almost all stencils have now been applied.

Album image #24
Alot are hard to see but I like the effect it gives.

Album image #25
Finally she joins 890 Squadron Onboard HMS Ark Royal.
The kit had "VL" tail markings which were applied when 890 Squadron were not on deployment and were based at RNAS Yeovilton.
I cut the "R" from a set of spare decals from an Italeri Royal Navy Wessex.

Album image #26
Apparently this photo didn't go as planned but I've glued on all of the Gear bay doors, missile adapters, Air brake, flaps, refueling probe, I've built the tail hook and built and sanded the drop tanks, Rocket pods and missiles ready to be primed again and if they look good painted..

Album image #27
Wheels and flaps now glued in place, canopy has been painted and installed open and the Ram Air Turbine "RAT", RAT Doors, wing support poles have all been painted.

Album image #28
The wings are nearly ready, the canopy has been painted and decalled.

Album image #29
The main aircraft is now ready awaiting the final installation of the wings soon

Album image #30
After finishing the Red Tops and Rocket pods I used some spare decals to add a tad of detail.
I then installed them

Album image #31
She's all ready for the wing installation.

Album image #32
Another view.

Album image #33
Wings, Drop Tanks, wing support bars, Nose, Canopy and rudders have all been glued in place.
The inner surfaces of the wings fold mechanism have been painted and weathered.
1 more job till completion!

Album image #34
The 2 Ark Royal girls meet at last!

Album image #35
And the 3 All Folded Jets meet for the first time!

Thanks Mark.

I have posted a further update!

I'm undecided on the nose though.
Should I leave it Black or have it Medium Gunship Grey?

I have always thought the Royal Navy has some of the most beautiful ugly aircraft in the world 🙂
I'm curious, what are all the red x-boxes for...?
Nice build 👍

@Adam, the banner photo for your project is the only example I've seen with a black radome. The background details in that photo look contemporary to me, suggesting it's a museum piece. I've found a lot of aviation museums in (especially) the UK to be unreliable regarding liveries.

Thanks for that Mark, I'll get it sprayed Grey ASAP then haha.

Rui, I just did a quick Google search and found that apparently they are no step markings.

Another update has been posted!

Also I've been researching photos of deployed 890 Sea Vixens on Ark Royal and I can only find a few photos of them using a grey nosecone!
The rest all have Black noses.
So I will be keeping the Black nose after all.
