Dambusters Tornado

Album image #1
Couldn't find aftermarket wing seals so I had to make my own. A bit crude but they will suffice.

Album image #2
Gears and wheels painted and partly weathered.

Album image #3
First time with dry fitted gears.

Album image #4
Cockpit completed. First time I've worked with resin cockpit and brass seat belts. With this in mind I am happy with the results.

Album image #5
Primed with Mr Surfacer 500

Album image #6
Using drawing templates to make the camouflage.

Album image #7
Project status as of 8 December 2014. Left to do: black leading edges on ILS antennae on the fin, post shading, gloss coating, decaling, gloss coating, weathering, flat coating 🙂 and hang ordnance, mount gears, brass tubes and two blade antennae.

Album image #8
Decaling in progress.

Album image #9
Decaling completed, some minor details left before clear coating and weathering. Found Revell Decal Soft to be much better than Micro Set/Sol.

Album image #10
Homemade wing seals

Album image #11
The Aires resin cockpit is really great. Made own demisting pipes for the canopy.

Album image #12
First time I worked with etched seatbelts. Really enjoyed working with the cockpit.

Album image #13
Completed and on the shelf for display!

Album image #14
Probably won't do another 1/32nd Tonka because it's a bit too big to handle when working with it. But this one was worth it!

Looking good. Waiting for more.
How is the fitting?

The Revell plastic is so-so, filler is needed and some joins are really bad. The Aires cockpit is beautiful but it needs careful removal of excess resin underneath, otherwise the nose wheel bay won't fit.

Album info

This 1/32 Tornado build is the largest I've ever undertaken and the first project with aftermarket parts since I returned to the hobby after a break of more than 10 years.

The progress photos were taken with a mobile camera.
