Any tips you have for adding texture/detailing/ weathering to my Seaview model?
26. May, 02:45
Ben M
I'd say the first thing to try would be a wash on details and lines
26. May, 03:24
JD
I like to see a glosscote on the Seaview, rather than flat grey, and a light blue grey on top and white underneath looks nice.

Hey Doug great choice! You know I'm on board with this build! First thoughts? What do you think of the kit when you first opened the box? Ideas on how to proceed?

Any tips for working with LED? Mistakes to avoid?

I think I've learned that bleed though is an issue, so one ought to add metal paint and black maybe, to stop the light going through the plastic in places. I've seen tube paint been used around led diodes, a type of thicker paint.
17. April, 07:58
Doug Craven
Yes Light spill is a concern. As you can see from some of these pictures, I painted the inside of the hull with black primer. I also used foil tape, the kind you use on heating ducts, not only to mask the light but to reflect it back where I wanted it. Of course what I learned this time around is that you've got to insulate your wires so they don't make contact with the foil.
17. April, 16:26
Doug Craven
I know some of the modellers iin the Star Trek forum I belong to on Facebook use black sealing tape to prevent spill. Whatever you use, it's really important that you keep checking to make sure that you don't have spill before you seal it up.
17. April, 16:27
Doug Craven
@jd Yes, essential! Any kind of sake will do!

I was thinking of dry painting some light grey on the column of fire. Any opinions about where this paint should go? Should it be in the seams or should it be in the cloudy parts?

12. April, 11:53

The photos don't do the lights justice. The kit look fantastic lit. You need VERY thin gauge wire. Black actually hides well; red stands out too much. I used 28 AWG. For the lights, I recommend nano or pico leds. You can pick these up at www.evandesigns.com.
12. April, 12:32

Oh and really important: use soft white instead of bright white leds. Bright white looks a little green under the yellow.

Amazon is your best bet. Search for optical fiber. I bought 300 ft. Of 0.5 mm for around 15$

Great project Doug! I hate it when a setback slows you down, but keep at it, I want to see this one finished! Maybe a dunk in a strip bath for the flying sub, rather then sanding?

There's a few methods but I find the easiest and least toxic way is to use a strong automotive degreaser like Purple Power, Simple green, etc. soak parts in this and anywhere between a few minutes to overnight depending on the type of paint, then a little encouragement with a toothbrush should do the trick. Here's an example World war toons Panther V | Album by Mithran’dir (1:Egg)
