New day, new project with everyone's favourite 1st generation jet fighter. I have chosen the simpler of the two paint schemes, which will still be a bit of a challenge for me. Also, I won't install the rocket pods or extra tanks because I think it would make her look a bit ugly. Paints from Revell, Humbrol and Mr.Hobby.

Agreed, my favourite early jet fighter too 🙂
Will follow this one.
Are you going to open the wheel wells too?

Hi Jan,
yes, she will have extended wheels.

I just hope I don't forget to add a nose weight. Again... :-P

How did you deal with the notorious canopy issues that this kit has? When I did this kit that was the biggest problem it gave me.

Looking good, following. 👍

Hi Skywalker,
It took me a while to figure out what to do with the canopy as well. What I ended up doing was, first carefully sanded the edges of the canopy to a point where it sits flush at the back and front, fixed it with Tamiya Extra Thin (be extra carefull here) and when everything was dry and solid, filled in the gaps with Revell Contacta Clear using a toothpick. Whether that worked and looks any good we will see when everything is finished 😄

Fine !
Love that plane !
Never built the Revell one, but it will be the next one on the benchrest.
The parts fit perfectly, like a Tamiya kit or a snap-kit, but check the angle of the engines...
Regards.

Nice build and paint job, mate. Looking with interest for the final result.👍🏻

And she's done.
Some notes:
- The decal sheet does not contain components for a swastika, however the instructions indicate where one should be placed. It's very faint however and one needs a keen eye to notice. I didn't have a spare one so didn't place one on, maybe at some time later when I do have some leftovers.
- Overall the fit is very good and it has nice details for the scale, except for the canopy, which is just atrocious.
- The bumps and dents on the nose are an accident from when I installed the nose weight. I used Revell Plasto putty to fix in some small screws, forgetting that Plasto contains a chemical that basically works like the Contacta glue. It softened and, with the help of time and gravity, deformed the plastic where it was placed. I decided to turn that into a bit of battle damage, maybe caused by debris from a shot down aircraft or something.
- On that note, the intructions called for 20g as a nose weight, which is quite a lot. Probably a printing error and it should be 2.0g.
- This is the first time in ages that I tried to install an aerial wire. The 0.25mm is probably way too thick for that scale to look even remotely realistic.
Overall a nice kit with some exceptions (canopy).

Very nice end result, Rando. Congratulations! 👍
I've also had the problem of sticking the weight in.
Since then I've been using wood glue to glue the weight in.

" Also, I won't install the rocket pods or extra tanks "
And you are right because this "Schüle flugzeug" did not use any of them and also could simply not use them as it was not equiped to do so.
Nice result indeed, but i don't agree with the camo scheme of the fuselage : we have pictures of this specific aircraft and the two tones scheme is evident, as specified by RLM's instructions. I'm sadly surprised that Revell gave such erroneous colours indications !

Bit dark, but nicely done 👍

Hi Transall,
thanks for the insight. I agree, it's a shame Revell didn't take more care in their research. However, this one kit is from 1999 and that paint scheme hasn't appeared since on this kit, if Scalemates is to be believed, so maybe they learned from that mistake.
Personally, I don't care too much about historical accuracy (with exceptions) and take the schemes provided as is - because I'm just too lazy to do extra research 😄

Thanks Lukasz,
you're right, it's a bit darker than I expected. For some reason the Humbrol 251 (RLM81) in particular darkened noticably after I applied the gloss coats, not sure what happened there. But I'm not too fussed about it. Also, subpar lighting setup.
