photo 2, Should the base of my Willy be Orange Fire, or Metallic Green?
28 November 2018, 18:24
Tom ...
Hmm, I vote for a metallic red, one with little sparkles in it so it looks glittery. AND I would paint flames!
28 November 2018, 21:16
Chris Greathouse
@ Tom, I used Metallic red on the bus, but I haven't used my metallic green yet. facebook poll --> facebook.com/chrisag..sts/2054509657920951

prismatic paints from Alclad maybe? never tried them myself ...... alclad2.com/finishes..tic-spectral-chrome/
29 November 2018, 21:45
Chris Greathouse
Maybe I'll get into crazy colors later, I mean I just got the hang of light coats and using the paint right... I need more practice first. But that sparkle green would be rad! I'd call it The Frogster.
29 November 2018, 22:06
Tom ...
yeah, I've no idea how to do glitter but I get a kick out of tell others to do stuff 🙂 Oh and a diorama would be rad too.

But seriously, I'm definitely going to look at Alclad for doing metal finishes. Not happy at all with Tamiya's "Silver Chrome".
29 November 2018, 22:18
Spanjaard
alclad can deliver great results... but the preparation of the surface must be just simply perfect. shinny polished plastic is the key. any tiny imperfection will be a lot more visible after alclad. yes, that very small one that "will not be seen" is exactly the one i mean 😉

I'm thinking of buying the "Novus 7100 Plastic Polish Kit", think it's over kill? amazon.com/gp/product/B002UCYRZU/
29 November 2018, 22:41
Tom ...
I saw Novus at my LHS and was tempted to get it (they were having a sale) but it did seem overkill and I was only think about using it for cleaning up clear plastic....
29 November 2018, 22:59
Spanjaard
i have never used that product, so i can not comment, sorry.
29 November 2018, 23:08

i guess you know compound from Tamiya, right? SCM Search: Tamiya Polishing Compound*
not sure if that works with transparent plastic, since i did not try myself.
what i have done was to use 12.000 polishing pads on a cockpit, with very nice result in my last F-4J

*well that escalated quickly* lol you guys are crazy... it's only $17, so I may try... I don't really get the whole sanding, polishing and finishing when aside from slight residue/grease the plastic is already smooth. I guess I don't understand the benifit of scuffing up everything, just to go through the sandpaper grit array, then compounds to get smooth... is the finish before/after really that different.
30 November 2018, 00:48
Tom ...
I think you only have to go through everything when you've had to do some sanding to begin with, like removing pin marks, sanding filler or removing scratches.
30 November 2018, 06:03
Martin Oostrom
You'll be surprised of the difference between regular plastic and after a polish. I'm not sure it's the way to go as I lifted the primer, paint and clear coat of my Mini after I had polished the bare plastic.
30 November 2018, 06:14
Tom ...
Currently agree with Martin. I'm using 1200 grit sponge to de-shine the plastic so the acrylic primer has more to cling to. I've had paint peel off when masking before.

If I was going for the polished effect I'd either use a lacquer based primer to get better adhesion on polished plastic or maybe build up the acrylic primer and then polish it? I find that half the fun is figuring all this out by trial and error anyway.

I didn't find it funny when I applied the very last metal dry transfer and lifted the paint 🙁
It did force me into the realm of selfmade decals though. A window of opportunity closes and a door opens somewhere….

In this album Some testing | Album by Mahoo76 (1:1) , picture 11+, you can see some green glitter. It is this paint for the green: alclad2-online.co.uk..ORDN=&RNZ=476019

Ha, I'm cracking up. I bought the Novus scratch remover on amazon and it's 8oz bottles! What I saw in the LHS was 2oz's for the same price and just assumed that's what I was getting. OMG it's so much product! I'm going to have to look for stuff to polish now. My house will be gleaming from space... and maybe the neighborhood as well.
1 December 2018, 22:02
Chris Greathouse
well... they are auto sized bottles, not model auto sized 😛 Lemme know how you use it and your process of doing so and of course what you think of the result! 🙂
1 December 2018, 22:49
Spanjaard
And probably it is the same product 😉 we are being ripped off by some companies... like with washes, that are basically 10% and 90% thinner, at the price of real paint 😛
1 December 2018, 22:52
Chris Greathouse
@Spanjaard, I've seen a lot of videos/forums where the people are indeed using auto products instead of modeling products and saving a ton of money, take the Novus on Amazon. $17 for 3 8oz bottles... Tom saw the 2oz set for the same price. Hell... look at any of our hobby paints.. 17ml of Vallejo for $4... I could probably go to the craft section of Hobby Lobby and get 2oz of a high pigment paint for $4... it's all how it's advertised and it's how crafty we hobbyists can get with our product 😛

Tom ...
Getting fancy I see!
4 December 2018, 19:34
Chris Greathouse
I really love it when the seats come with a harness/belt, it adds flavor to an otherwise boring single-tone seat... fyi, the passenger seat has no belt at all! I hope there is at least an oh crap bar to hang on too... this sucker has a parachute and wheelie casters, so anything but a slow ride 😛

That's close to what I say perps when I put them in the Back seat of the patrol car ! "Sit down, shut up and hold on to the best of your ability" LOL !! Truck is looking Good ! for detail on the Ford logo on the valve covers a fine tip sharpie works great in the oval and use a wooden toothpick to rub it off the lettering.

Chris Greathouse
Thanks Robert! I only wish the hood fit a bit better.... but a fun project... super quick too.. only 8 days
6 December 2018, 00:15
Bob Hall
AMT kits fit is questionable at best sometimes, ya just have to make due,as they make some of my all time favorite car kits. But sand paper a file and a little patience is what ya have to do with them sometimes.
6 December 2018, 00:37
Chris Greathouse
I have to pull the hood outwards near the bottom, and then do 1 side then the other to get a good fit... I've heard that AMT is kinda crappy gutter-quality, I've made a couple and can verify.... but like you said... AMT has some great cars.

NEXT ONE ???

I think I'ma grab life by the balls and go with the Ferrari.... super complicated and intimidating as f*ck for me, but I think I can... I think I can... I think I can...
6 December 2018, 01:10

The only thing faster than that truck is you! Nice job. The Ferrari looks like a cool project too. Wish I could keep your pace... Weekend can't come soon enough.

EPIC !!! May the Force be with you, on that endeavor !

@ Tom, one of the few perks of permanent disability and no work, lots of time on my hands 😛
6 December 2018, 02:49
Chris Greathouse
The Ferrari will have to hold for a cycle... I don't have half the paints or comparable... I just scored 12 23ml tamiya's for $40 inc shipping over at scalehobbyist... makes it about $3.30 a bottle, not bad 😄
6 December 2018, 04:08
Tom ...
So to followup on the Novus and Tamiya polishes. I got to use them in anger on scratched clear pieces from a kit I got off eBay.

The Novus #3 and #2 are equivalent to the Tamiya's Course and Fine, respectively. Both products do a good job for really light scratches when hand polishing. I think for the deeper scratches one would need to use some kind of buffing tool to be able to remove enough plastic; either that or massive amounts of elbow-grease. Actually maybe using sandpaper is the answer there. Hmmm.... didn't think of that.

While I was able to get the plastic looking good with the #2 and the "Fine" polish, Tamiya's "Finishing" polish is what gets the plastic looking brand-spanking new. Really impressive. Absolute must-have product.

The Novus #1 is not a polish but rather a "cleaner" and anti-static fluid and so of no real use with regard to polishing. Don't make the mistake of thinking it's equivalent to Tamiya's Finishing polish. That's what I initially thought.
