One question to ask: Researching cockpit colours. Are modern British cockpits a lighter/darker gray? Black instrument panels? What colour are the seats and cushions?

Good luck with the build. I think the Tornado is a cool plane.

how is an aircraft from the seventies a modern aircraft ? 😄😉
...... because they still use it today... to answer my own question 😄

Taking a look at the pieces. In theory it shouldn't take long, but then again this is me I'm talking about! Old kit with raised panels. Should this be my first lesson in scribing my own?

That is up to you sir, It is a challenge, at least to me anyway. I have some Hasagewa 1/32 scale kits with raised panel lines. I am just going to pre shade them then airbrush the models. Afarid I will mess them up if I try and rescribe them.

Yes, I have been reading about preshading, then taking a zillion grit sandpaper and run along the panel lines to expose the black underneath. Even without the sandpaper, preshading is probably the best bet. Most of the finish is white, so it will show quite well. That method does require me to try my airbrush, so I learn something new either way.

Interesting I'm in Alan. I like to follow what kit modelers make out of these old kits. A close friend of mine just finished the old Airfix HIS Belfast and it looks nice even 40 years after it's first release.

Just started with the cockpit. There is not much to this kit. I think I will use the two figures to liven it up.

Is it an RAF version. The only one I ever built was a 1/32 scale German version.

It will be done as prototype no. 2 XX946 with the markings and colours that are on the boxart. The markings for this version for different locations on the plane include the RAF and Italian roundels and the German cross as well as the roundel that has sections for the colours of each nation.

Been a while, but finished up the cockpit. There will be a lot of filling putting the body together.

Nice work Alan, I keep forgetting just how small 1:72nd scale really is !
you've done a nice job on the crew 🙂

Thanks Clifford, Choppa and John. Yes they can be small, but fit on the shelf more easily. Thank goodness for my magnifier lamp. Without that, I could not paint them at all.

Good on ya for not letting an old kit go to waste! Great job!

I haven't built many kits, but I can tell the difference between new and old kits! Building this - it would be nice to NOT have a huge gap in every seam. I have everything but the canopy and the end caps that serve as engines on the back together. Lots of filler and sanding has pretty much destroyed the raised panel lines but with the prototype paint scheme, it will be colourful at least. Thought I would try an airbrush for the first time on it as well. Better to ruin a free kit from a friend than an expensive new one.

Thanks. They took a while (painting over mistakes and then painting over the mistakes that those corrections caused!) but I am happy with them in the end.

One of my close friends just build the Airfix HMS Belfast in 1/600. He has a passion for old Airfix kits and one of his mates gave him the motto - give old kits a chance!
I always lie to follow such WIP to see what comes out of the kit! Well done so far Alan!

Album info

Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (M.R.C.A.) or the Panavia Tornado as a toddler. It is an Airfix kit from the '70's given to me by a friend, so I will try to build the prototype version.
