Gordon Sørensen Started on the Harvard IIb.
Cast a couple copies of the Academy T-6G interior. Probably not 100% correct, but looks the part...
Cut off the rudder and elevators with a trusty razor-saw.
Got the fuselage closed up and horizontal stabs installed, added the wing. Starting to look like a Harvard!

17. August 2019 at 06:56:24
Gordon Sørensen Thanks Erik, Serge and Stephan.
Got some green on the aircraft today. Its a mix of Humbrol 30 and 163. A lot of the forums I have read say Humbrol 30 Dark Green is too bright but 163 looks too dark to me.
20. September 2019 at 16:36:44
Gordon Sørensen Ready for decalling! I have an older boxing as well as the latest, and comparing the squadron codes, there is quite a difference. The newer decals definitely look way too green. Going to use the older boxing's squadron codes but the roundels from the newer release.

Gordon Sørensen Found a picture of RB159 sporting a drop-tank
I have one in the stash somewhere. Definately going to add it!
4. October 2019 at 21:37:06
Gordon Sørensen Some of the decals shattered, so had to use spares and cobble together the Squadron codes on one side.
Just the canopy, propeller, and pitot tube to add. Have read online that the prop is wrong. It does look a little too fat (wide cord) to me. Going to sand that down a little.

Gordon Sørensen There is a grand total of 14 parts in the kit. And it has the detail you would expect from a kit that has 14 parts... The instructions (what little there is) have you scratchbuild a lot of the interior, as well as some exterior parts..
Instead, I made a resin cast copy of the tailwheel, antenna, sidewall, floor and seats from the Academy T-6G. I also cast a copy of the engine and airscoop from the AZUR NAA-57..
10. May 2019 at 17:43:19
Matthew A This looks intresting. From what I have heard Beechnut Models are accurate in shape but need a lot of work
10. May 2019 at 17:50:23
Erik De Smet I once had this kit too and it ended in the waste bin, once the AZUR kits came out ...
15. May 2019 at 18:33:47
Gordon Sørensen Got the resin interior installed. Still have to do the rear bulkhead and shelf, but that will be done in plasticard.
Either through bravado or over-estimation of my abilities, I razor-sawed the cowling off.
Figured there was no way I was going to be able to mount the interior and the engine, and close the fuselage up...
Added a 0.5mm spacer to give the cowling a little more visual impact. That, and to give me a little more room for the replacement resin engine. Still had to trim the heck out of it to get it to fit though.
15. May 2019 at 18:41:37
Matthew A Good idea removing the cowling to make work easier
15. May 2019 at 18:44:53
Gordon Sørensen The fuselage came together OK. The rear of the cockpit on one fuselage side was short-shot, so built that up with a bit of putty. A lot of sanding required to get ride of a step in the fuselage seem. That removed some of the detail so I re-scribed the panel lines with a razor saw.
Split the elevators from the horizontal stabilizers. Like most short-run kits, they are a butt-joint. The profile difference between the stab and fuselage mount is huge. Not sure if I should use card-stock to build it up or just Putty it....
Checked the wings, and the profile doesn't even come close to matching the mount on the fuselage...
9. June 2019 at 12:35:06
Gordon Sørensen Painted the engine. Scratchbuilt front and rear instrument panels. Quite happy with how they turned out.
4. July 2019 at 00:04:43
Gordon Sørensen The instrument panels are not quite accurate, but better than what was included in the kit (nothing).
Detailed the propelller. I think it looks a lot better. Need to repaint the propeller hub a different silver though....
10. July 2019 at 15:36:29
Gordon Sørensen Mounted the wings. They are a different thickness than the wing roots, so a lot of putty and sanding is in my future....

Gordon Sørensen Very nice cockpit detail... but, the insert isn't quite wide enough and leaves a gap between it and the fuselage sidewalls.
Split the rudder from the fuselage, and royally screwed that up. Using the Razor saw, got out of the panel line and made a cut in the tail. A little Tamiya Putty later, and hopefully no one will notice too much.
Split the elevators from the horizontal stabilizers too. That went much better...
The Fuselage/Wing fit is excellent. Much better than the Academy Spitfire Mk. XIV...
9. June 2019 at 13:20:19
Gordon Sørensen A little putty on the wing/fuselage junction and a bit at the tail. Painted the Anti-Glare panel. Masked the ailerons. Going to do them, the elevators and the rudder in Testors Silver.
4. July 2019 at 00:01:05
Gordon Sørensen Painted the control surfaces. Need to do the wing walkways, mask them and the nose anti-glare and will be ready for more paint.
10. July 2019 at 15:33:05
Gordon Sørensen Main painting complete. Now just for the decalling and adding the little bits...
25. July 2019 at 13:47:51
Stefan Schacht Count me in Gordon, i like the T6 and the Royal Danish Air Force.
31. July 2019 at 15:19:58
Gordon Sørensen Thanks, Stefan! Great little kit. Decals went down nicely. Added the two antenna and pitot tube. Painted some of the rear canopy, the last little bit of framing is going to be hard to mask.
I am having a bugger of a time painting the wheels. Can't get a nice paint division between the hub and the wheel. Cleaned the paint off three times now. Fouth times the charm!
2. August 2019 at 15:27:22
Lost_Erik Lovely build.
4. August 2019 at 14:57:49

Cuajete Looking good so far. Good luck with restoration.
13. March 2019 at 19:04:20
Gordon Sørensen Damaged repaired. Didn't quite get the fuselage crack exactly lined up but too late now.....
The rear fixed canopy section went "ping" with the shelf incidence. Trying to find a replacement...
10. May 2019 at 17:54:34
Gordon Sørensen 'Borrowed' the rear canopy from an Italeri Spitfire Mk.IX and modified the tail decals from an aftermarket set I had in the stash. Highlighted the panellines with a Prismacolour Pen - Dark Grey. Thought black might be too dark. Spitfire #26 finished!
8. August 2019 at 18:34:55

Happily, the Sabre wasn't too crowded in with the Tutor and wasn't cordoned off so I was able to get a lot of reference pics.

airjuneau Great reference shots. Will it be restored?
19. June 2019 at 01:40:11
Gordon Sørensen I learned to fly on this Stearman 32 years ago. My Dad sold it in '87. I happened to find it in pieces and for sale last year. If I had the money, I would buy it and restore it, but the best I can do is the Revell 1/48. Going to do one for my brother (Thats him flying with my mom in the front), one for my Dad (still flying at 85 years-old), and one for me.
19. June 2019 at 03:08:24
airjuneau Sound like a case for for Mikey McBryan and his "plane savers" ;)

I would be heartbroken to see the plane I learned flying on in this condition. The plane I learned flying on crashed 3 years ago and I felt really sorry.

Are you doing them in that livery? That would be really awesome :)

I also have two more stearmans in my stash. :)

Richmond Why do so many modellers have multiple copies of the same kit in their stashes?
24. March 2019 at 20:15:08
Augie so we can build different schemes,, cause we're indecisive and cant choose one lol
24. March 2019 at 21:17:26
Choppa Nutta haha Augie very true !! :)
but also a second chance at building it but with less mistakes (hopefully) :D

Gordon Sørensen Different Schemes, Different Version, or maybe we just like that airplane! I have a couple models in my display cabinet I finished in the early late 70 or early 80s. Would like to try again just to see what I could do now...
25. March 2019 at 17:10:49
Clifford Keesler I have a Academy FB-111 that was my first build, after returning to the hobby. To look at it now it looks terrible, so it will be getting tore down and given a majior face lift, with what I have learned here on scalemates over the last four years.
25. March 2019 at 22:20:59
Bryn Crandell Nice collection of both unbuilt and built Gordon. The polish holders are a good idea. May have to invest in a pair.

Łukasz Gliński If I may, I'd propose white primer :)
2. April 2019 at 19:20:05
Gordon Sørensen Yeah Lucasz, I was thinking that after the second or third coat. A little late now...
2. April 2019 at 20:51:08
Łukasz Gliński We both know it's never too late to wash away the misbehaving white paint ;)
3. April 2019 at 06:05:07
Gordon Sørensen Broke down and took Lucasz' advice....
Sanded some of the white, gave it a coat of Tamiya white primer, and then a final coat of Testors White. More or less happy with coverage now.
Resprayed the bottom in Tamiya Grey Primer.
Ready to make the fuselage windows.

Łukasz Gliński Glad to hear my advise is welcome ;) Waiting for the blue part :)
13. May 2019 at 18:37:27
Gordon Sørensen Soooo.... the blue trim is translucent. I need to redo the white/grey split on the fuselage. Right now you can see the grey through the decal, so I need to re-paint white where the blue decal sits.
One atep forward, two steps back.... And this isn't even an Amodel Avanti...
14. May 2019 at 15:49:24
Łukasz Gliński Thou shalt not take the name of the Avanti in vain ;)
