Fairey Barracuda

Right, here we go. I read some rw’s about this kit and it suppose to be challenging, so has been on the shelf for sometime but I like the odd shape of this one plus i’m a sucker for large single engine bombers so I’m gonna give it a go. I have been mentally gearing for it
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/5/2/7/1286527-42954-90-720.jpg)
The interior detail is very nice
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/5/2/8/1286528-42954-98-720.jpg)
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/5/2/9/1286529-42954-63-720.jpg)
Have scratched built the VHF receiver as I’ve seen on some larger scale Barracudas
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/5/3/0/1286530-42954-66-720.jpg)
Have added some 3d printed seatbelts from my spares. They are usaaf for the keen eye but they all look the same to me at this scale
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/3/1/4/1288314-42954-60-720.jpg)
Now these side windows have been giving me nightmares. The kit included ones are not even close to the shape of these, so ended up pouring clear resin into the holes and it will have to do.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/5/3/2/1286532-42954-70-720.jpg)
In the meantime have painted the torpedo using the new Vallejo metal acrylic line for the first time, and boy, what a finish, i’m blown away!
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/7/9/1/1286791-42954-53-720.jpg)
Some light panel line accents and the cockpit is good to go
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/7/9/0/1286790-42954-46-720.jpg)
Last look before closing the fuselage halves
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/9/0/9/1287909-42954-22-720.jpg)
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/9/0/8/1287908-42954-33-720.jpg)
With the fuselage halves glued together will focus on the wings next
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/1/9/9/1288199-42954-83-720.jpg)
Now that the signalling lights are sorted will need to focus on the trickiest engineering issue of this project. The large wind break that has no guidance holes on the wing and will probably be knocked off a few times before the end of the project
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/0/0/1288200-42954-31-720.jpg)
It went together better than expected, but will need some putty and sanding
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/0/1/1288201-42954-64-720.jpg)
This thing put together looks even longer than before
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/3/4/5/1288345-42954-78-720.jpg)
My least favourite part of any project. The hook assembly left some gaps between itself and the fuselage so used some plastic goo to fill it up
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/1/6/5/1289165-42954-38-720.jpg)
Made some progress today...
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/1/6/4/1289164-42954-92-720.jpg)
But the fit of these air intakes are atrocious. They don’t even have any guidance as to where to place them.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/5/6/1293756-42954-21-720.jpg)
Progress is slow. After loads of putty, plastic goo and sanding, all gaps and misalignments have been corrected and after some masking it is finally ready for primer.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/4/9/9/1295499-42954-96-720.jpg)
Well, this is a kick in the nuts. The fuselage came apart here somehow and just noticing it now, while painting
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/8/9/3/1296893-42954-74-720.jpg)
Only recently discovered this masking putty and using it for the second time but absolutely love it.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/5/4/4/1297544-42954-11-720.jpg)
A bit sceptical about the wheel supports. Not sure it’ll hold the weight of the plane
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/5/4/5/1297545-42954-34-720.jpg)
Finally made some significant progress. A coat of pledge and she’s ready for the decals
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/3/2/4/1298324-42954-61-720.jpg)
Did the barracuda have recognition lights? Not sure but seen this on another forum and decided to go with it, as there are some raised surfaces under this wing that could be those
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/3/2/3/1298323-42954-43-720.jpg)
One of my favourite parts of the project. Making some serious headway
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/2/0/7/1299207-42954-67-720.jpg)
The metal mesh I ordered from ebay came just in time.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/2/0/8/1299208-42954-64-720.jpg)
Not too long now. Just some details to be added. Hopefully gonna finish it today.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/2/7/6/1299276-42954-12-720.jpg)
Getting a last coat of matt varnish
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/2/7/5/1299275-42954-41-720.jpg)
I painted the recognition lights with gloss varnish so that they look like lights
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/6/9/2/1299692-42954-38-720.jpg)
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/6/9/3/1299693-42954-26-720.jpg)
Finally completed. A very difficult kit with poor moulding quality parts that turned out really good. Happy with how this turned out, but not a kit for the faint of heart
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/6/9/4/1299694-42954-57-720.jpg)
Tried my hand at rigging for the first time- you can (not) see the result for yourself. Yeah... not for me
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/6/9/5/1299695-42954-36-720.jpg)
Care to guess how many times these aerials were knocked off until all was said and done?

I went with the mk I exhaust. Couldn’t help it, looked too cool.

Watching on with interest as I was looking at the 'Pacific Fleet' version of this kit.

Hi David. Yes, indeed the kit is not for the faint of heart. Maybe the 1/48 is a bit better

😂 in that case arm yourself with a lot of patience and have a hasegawa on stand bye to mentally recover after completion

Lovely build. Well done.
Anything Special Hobby has "challenges", filler and sanding rapidly becoming your friend. I have the 1/48 version in the stash that will be finished as one of the aircraft in the attack on the Tirpitz in 1944.
My father was trained to service Barracudas in WWII along with Seafires and was being prepared for the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands servicing aircraft just behind the invasion beaches.
You might want to reconsider the armament. For offensive operations I think they were used more as a bomber / dive bomber with a 500lb SAP bomb on the fuselage rack, than a torpedo bomber.

Thanks Phil. They are challenging but build into a nice kit at the end.
That is very cool about your father, you must know some interesting stories I bet.
I am aware of the fact that they used the bombs more than the torpedoes, especially this example that actually landed a hit on the Tirpitz, thanks for pointing it out, but I'm more leaning towards looks and cool factor in my builds rather than historical accuracy.

Great build, I'll be using your build as a reference when I eventually get round to building mine. Congrats! 👍

Interesting aircraft, seems to share it's role with the Swordfish and the TBM Avenger.
Well built !!

Very nice build, you don't see many Barracuda's, it has the looks only a mother could love, which makes it all the better modelling subject

Thank you. Agreed, she's a very interesting subject, i like the oddness of it

One cannot see the hardships you encountered anymore. Good result.
