Alphajet comparative build.

Album image #1
reference drawings : 1/72nd scale aviation modeler december 2009

Album image #2
left: Heller ejection seats, PJ production replacement Martin Baker Mk.4; right KP ejection seats : for German AJ

Album image #3
KP fuselage and wings compared to scale drawing : The wings are OK, but the tail appears to be 4 mm too short

Album image #4
Heller fuselage and wings compared to scale drawing: however, landing lights are not in the wings

Album image #5
fuselage dry fit : KP seems easier to build; shorter tail on KP not really visible

Album image #6
ejection seats in both kits can be replaced by resin (mine come from PJ Productions)

Album image #7
Auxiliary tanks : more complicated construction on Heller; I won't use them anyway on Belgian AJ

Album image #8
Wings : separation of upper and lower wings different . KP needs some clean up to get a good fit

Album image #9
Inlets : slightly better on KP , in the middle resin replacement for Heller by Pavla

Album image #10
Dry fit of the fuselage; Heller parts a little bit warped, but it can help to fit the cockpit. Bottom part of KP is easier to fit than the Heller. I think they need both some weight in the nose.

Album image #11
Undercarriage construction is similar on both kits; but I think it is better to wait with therese parts, till the end, even after painting.

Album image #12
The wing slots on the KP kit need widening to fit the tab. Heller fits fine

Album image #13
Cockpit construction similar, Heller gives more space for the pilot. There is a Pavla resin replacement for the cockpit Alpha Jet E (Pavla Models C72093, 1:72) which costs more than the kit. I will not use it. I think this makes only sense if you want to build a "competition" model with open canopy, which is way beyond my capabilities.
So I will simulate minimal detail in the cockpits, below a closed canopy and with resin ejection seats

C72093

Album image #14
Nose gear : KP parts look like a copy of the HELLER. Neither one ressembles the real one

Album image #15
The main gear looks too tiny on both kits

Album image #16
A good fellow measured the gear at the 1 Wing Historical Centre at Beauvechain. Nose and main gear definitely need a replacement

Album image #17
After two weeks of trial and error to make a replacement gear (in the middle) I decided to keep the kit parts and to modify/ reinforce them with bits of 1 mm and 1,5 mm plastic rod .

Album image #18
The KP wings have the right shape and engraved panels, which is OK for me. The Heller wing needs corrections with putty. The flap hinges need also a correction. I tried to engrave the Heller wing, but my skills are so bad, I decied to refill it again. I think it will not make a big difference with the special decoration I intend to use.

Album image #19
Both kits have " empty shelves" behind the ejection seats, although there is a lot of stuff visible there. Luckily there are some well documented builds of the Kinetic 1/48 kit, which give a good view of what it could be. I added bits and pieces with plastic card and rod to simulate the equipment in that area

Cockpits detailed with bits and pieces, PJ production Martin Baker seats, HUD display of acetate sheet

Album image #24
The KP cockpit improved

Album image #25
The Heller cockpit improved

Album image #26
ready for primer, just a bit of putty needed on the joints

Album image #27
grey primer AK and some small corrections

Album image #28
basecoat magenta (almost pink) before yellow

Album image #29
I used oramask sheet for masking

Album image #30
masking top

Album image #31
masking bottom

Album image #32
masks removed and more masks added. Some corrections needed

Album image #33
paint disaster. When trying to correct some over and underspray with a brush and AK real color, the paint resolved the underlying coat and when I tried to remove it with Lifecolor cleaner , the paint started chipping . I will now strip off all the paint and restart

Album image #34
tinkercad design for nose wheel replacement

Album image #35
tinkercad design for main gear replacement

Album image #36
tinkercad design for cockpit improvement

Album image #37
comparison between KP kit parts and resin 3D printed replacement and PJ resin ejection seat

Album image #38
But the KP main wheels are much better than the Heller/Revell ones

Album image #39
The nose streaks are very thin and tiny : I will use PE leftovers to make them

Album image #40
new paint scheme for the Heller kit: Lifecolor Red and Yellow waterbased acrylics.

Album image #41
new paint sheme for the Heller kit : Revell enamel blue spray

Album image #42
I found in my collection this model, brush painted +20 years ago, the varnish became yellow. After stripping the paint with oven cleaner, it appeared to be the Fujimi/ Heller kit underneath.

Album image #43
The Fujimi/Revell kit: old model Paint removed, ejection seats removed, UC removed, and new coat of Tamiya AS-16 light grey , 3D cockpit details added, PE strips on the nose. Will be repainted in the early vietnam type camo

Album image #44
laser printed decals for the upgrade

Album image #45

Album image #46

Album image #47

Album image #48
happy with the 3d replacement U/C

Album image #49
the bottom, paint error difficult to correct

Album image #50
back view

Album image #51
Revell/Heller finished. I got a lot of issues with the old DACO decals, which were rather stiff and did not react well to microsol. Luckily the set I had contained two identical sheets, so corrections were possible .

I have these two kits, and will build them together.

Following...
Do you plan to include the Fujimi kit as well? Many years ago I made one from Starfix and
I think I remember it was a rather horrible kit.

No, I just have these two kits. The Fujimi kit is nearly impossible to find. The Revell version of the Heller kit , almost thé same. I used the Matchbox kit for my Alpha-Jegg. And I have 3 old builds of the Airfix and Heller somewhere in my basement.

Interesting double feature! I'm following.

Nose gear is disappointing for both kits. Option 1 : use it anyway ; Option 2 : go for the spare box ( can't find anything suitable) ; Option 3 : resin replacement , can you hear me Pavla and Quickboost ?
Option 4: 3D print design (I do not have the skills). Final Option : make a replacement with plastic card and rod : I will try, otherwise it will be option 1.

What a cool comparison build. It looks that neither Heller nor KP have really bothered to do their best. Although I am sure you will bring out the very possible best of both kits.

Looking at the internet pictures of the main gear , it seams that it also needs more " muscles"
@Thomas, Heller has the excuse that it based the kit on prototype data. KP made some improvements, but missed other points.

This "KP hell" title seems adequate 😄 Following with interest, Erik!

Thanks for this work 🙂

Robert, actually I think the KP is a decent kit considering the limited resources they have, and it is better than the old Hell-er, aka Revell, but they missed the opportunity to improve details like the landing gear.
And I must admit I cannot find dimensional drawings for the gear. I could go to a museum at Beauvechain to measure it, but it is a bit to cold now for that.

Is the lower fuselage slightly wasp-waisted on KP's? one point for KP in that case imho. [img1]?v=v431af9d22e4

The further you venture, the more interesting it becomes. Got a Revell one, still hesitating to build it 😄

I had my booster, but this project needs a booster too. There is a lack of detail in the cockpit area, which needs scratch building. Could be expected for a 40 + year old Heller kit, but a missed opportunity for KP to do better

merci pour la comparaison , hélas le KP n'amène pas grand chose de bien....sauf les décos ...

Dammit hope you can fix it!

Too bad, fingers crossed for fixing (or building another one 😉)

The picture actually shows how fast the acrylic paint is attacked by Lifecolor cleaner. The paint cracks and I can wipe it off with a brush and paper tissue, even the primer goes away.

@ matthew: some plastic became brittle, but it is repairable

I consider the KP kit as finished. Difficult paint job, as the AK real color yellow did not allow touch up of undersprays. Happy though with the 3D undercarriage

This completes the comparative build of Heller and KP: both kits have there shortcomings, the main issue is the U/C which does not compare with the reality. My attempt to get it printed in 3D give a result I am glad with.

Project completed with refurbished Fujimi/Revell

Album info

Comparative build of the old Heller/Revell kit and the new KP kit. Both have some issues, the main problem is the U/C for which I finally designed 3D printed replacements.
I also found in my collection an old model, which appeared to be the Fujimi/Revell kit, which I will give an upgrade after stripping off the paint.
