King Tiger
Tamiya zimmerit applied to the hull. Adlers Nest MG installed. Turret drying and some tracks started.
Turret now has all the Zimmerit applied and most of the PE. Building the MG34 with an aber barrel, however I may not go with the MG up top and save it for my Tiger I.
Decided to throw an aber set on the cupola MG34. Still deciding if I even want to use it or not for the King Tiger.
More PE progress. Still loads left to do.
Test fitting the damaged fender and side skirts. Went with a few reference photos showing damaged front fenders with the side skirt portion missing.
Side by side of the kit tow cable and the Eureka one.
Managed to get the tow cable secured on the side.
Most of the engine deck is complete. Have some stretched sprue drying around the hooks to then turn into weld beads.
Start of the cast texture on the mantlet. Need to do the rest of it and the weld bead before sanding it down. Went with the Hobby Boss Aber barrel as it was the only one in stock. Just had to Dremel the mantlet and cut the barrel and it fits like a glove.
Test fitting the mantlet with the barrel.
Adding the missing cast texture and lines on the mantlet. Waiting on the plastic to dry to sand down then reapply the cast texture
Texture and locking ring/wire or whatever it is I keep seeing on references added around the bolts.
Added some weld beads around the cupola ring and a few other areas with some Tamiya putty. Will thin them down a bit once they dry
Fender and skirts left side
The other side
Test fitting the Friulmodel tracks on one side.
Sorting routing of the other big tow cable. Gonna have it wrapped around the exhaust and hanging off the tow hook/clevis most likely.
Cables routed and both rear fenders glued on. Few more details here and there then it's time for paint.
Hull completely finished and ready for Primer.
All primed up
Pre shading begins before laying down the Dunklegelb
Reinforced the pre shading with my new Sotar 20/2
Laid down the base dunkelgelb over the pre shaded base.
Laying down the green
More green
Red brown down. Need to tone it down alot.
Camo toned down.
Transfers applied over gloss with some micro set and micro sol. Gonna let them dry overnight.
Transfers all finished up and gave the entire tank a coat of matte varnish. Base coating chipping/weathering and oil work coming soon.
Starting the chipping process
Added most of the chips to the turret roof. Few slight hull red spots around the cupola and hatch.
Most of the chipping is done. Started up on the exhausted. Need to do the entire bottom up and lighten it slightly.
Exhausts mounted up.
Testing some ideas on the road wheels before I do the tank.
Oil wash applied around the driver's area. Needs some clean up and a few additions.
Going light with the oil wash on the Zimmerit itself with a few streaks.
Still need to clean up the oil wash on the roof a bit.
Oil washes fairly finished on the entire model.
Need to fix my broken spare track holders.
Muddied up the road wheels.
Tracks all dirtied up. Will change this up once on the tank and for the diorama.
Testing the fitment of the road wheels and wanted a quick test look soon of both the tracks mounted up.
Getting closer to the finish line.
Still loads more to do.
Decided to do up the Commander for the tank. Matte varnish still drying.
Seeing how he looks in his ride.
Poorly drawn rough idea of how I want the diorama layout to be. Subject possibly to change. Idea is for one of the last Pz-Abt 101 King Tigers covering the withdraw from France.
Forgot I had this old wounded tanker laying around. May have him walking down the road as well to greet the infantry.

Thank you, Simon! It's been a great kit to come back to. My late father purchased it for me back in the early 2000's so I finally decided to order all the needed goodies to work on it.

Nice progress!!
Like to see how it grows😄
Good looking pre shading and nice chipping effects
I expect great things from you😉
I've also built this kit a long time ago- my 1st king tiger ever😁
Tamiya's quality is always astonishing, i've built a m4 from the early 80s, and this one could keep up with the 2010 release from dragon!

Usually just the area I place transfers, Ben. Then I matte varnish the entire model before going to the next steps. Thank you again Simon!

Awesome paint work, and fantastic looking camouflage scheme 👍
What brand and colours did you use for the camo?

Thanks guys! James, the paints I used for the camo were as follows: Mission Models Dunkelgelb 1944, Mig/Ammo Olivgrun Opt 2 and Mig/Ammo Rotbraun. I tweaked the Rotbraun slightly with a few colors to match some reference photos I've seen. Then I went back after the camo was dry and sprayed a lightened mix of the camo (Added some dunkelgelb to the mix) just to get some fading and highlights.

Thanks again everyone for all the kind words! I posted up a poorly drawn illustration for the diorama idea I've had planned. It'll of course have a lot of tweaking. But the general idea is for the King Tiger to be one of the last few retreating from France to Belgium around 1944.
